LATEST FROM ISRAEL, IRAN, LEBANON – AND TRUMP

On Sunday, Israel’s conflicts with Iran and Lebanon, and power struggle with Trump, converged. Iran demanded that Israel abstain from bombing Beirut. So did Trump. Here is how it played out:

IDF Strikes Southern Beirut, Killing at Least Two, After Hezbollah Fires at Northern Israel: Israel said it had the right to respond to Hezbollah attacks earlier Sunday, with strikes on Beirut.

Eight people were reportedly killed and 13 others injured in Israeli airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital Beirut. IDF officials said they do not expect Iran to respond to a strike on Beirut, but are prepared for a Hezbollah response.

Israel’s bombing of Beirut’s southern suburbs came despite a US public and additionally reported private request last week not to attack Lebanon’s capital.

An Iranian leader said that Iran would “deliver a decisive and painful response” to the Beirut bombing, declaring that “rabid dogs must be disciplined and put back in their place.”

Iran launched missiles toward northern Israel on Sunday night, in the first such bombardment since a fragile ceasefire in early April, following Israeli attacks on the Lebanese capital Beirut.

Trump called Netanyahu and told him not to retaliate. “I call the shots. I call all the shots,” said Trump. “He doesn’t call the shots.”

The Israeli Air Force announced that it retaliated, striking Iranian military targets in an initial report on Sunday overnight – after Trump specifically instructed Netanyahu not to.

Iran says US naval blockade, support for Israel make American, Israeli assets ‘legitimate targets’: ‘They are neither committed to a ceasefire nor believe in dialogue’, says Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM GAZA:

For some basic info on the Palestine-Israel conflict, go here. For more critical context, skim thisthis, and this. To read about a remarkable but underreported, 20-month-long peaceful protest in Gaza against Israel, go here.

Ten Palestinians were killed and 29 others injured in Israeli attacks on various areas of the Gaza Strip since Sunday morning, according to medical sources, as Israel continued its daily violations of the ceasefire agreement.

ISRAELI MEDIA: Israel halts humanitarian aid to Gaza until further noticeIsrael’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said that following Iran’s missile attack on Israel, crossings into the Gaza Strip, including Kerem Shalom and Rafah, would be closed until further notice, among other security measures. As a result, the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza will be halted.

COGAT said the closure of the crossings is not expected to affect the humanitarian situation in Gaza. It claimed that “the quantities of food and humanitarian aid that have entered the Gaza Strip since the start of the ceasefire significantly exceed the population’s nutritional needs*, in accordance with accepted U.N. methodologies.”

*NOTE: Everything about this statement from COGAT is patently false. United Nations and other humanitarian organizations have stated clearly and consistently that Gaza is in a state of severe shortages of food, water, medical, sheltering, and sanitation supplies.

In fact, a recent Israeli study concluded that starvation in Gaza resulted from a premeditated policy, despite sustained public denial by the Israeli government (including COGAT). Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself said, “There is no policy of starvation in Gaza. And there is no starvation in Gaza.” Israeli Army spokesperson Effie Defrin similarly told NPR that Hamas was trying to create “an image of starvation, which doesn’t exist.”

Bottom line: Israel has no credibility on the topic of hunger in Gaza.

Israeli restrictions on fuel and supplies have hospitals in Gaza on the verge of shutting down: Health officials in Gaza say Israel is waging an aggressive campaign against Gaza’s healthcare system by deliberately calibrating restrictions on fuel and supplies to keep hospitals on the brink of collapse.

Gaza and its people may not survive this phase of ceasefire (excerpt): What does it mean to squeeze more than two million people into 30% of the already tiny Gaza Strip? It is a direct and deliberate policy of slow death, one that forces the population into an overcrowded and ever-shrinking open-air prison that lacks even the most basic conditions to sustain life.

Under these conditions, the absence of cemeteries is one of the cruelest indicators of social collapse. Families in Gaza have already been forced to bury their dead in informal graveyards, empty lots and makeshift spaces because major cemeteries were damaged, inaccessible or full. A society that cannot find space to bury its dead cannot be expected to build schools, clinics, playgrounds, water tanks, greenhouses, factories or homes. Even death becomes displaced.

DEATH TOLL – GAZA GENOCIDE (tentative):
  • At least 961 since ceasefire began Oct. 11, 2025 (247 children, 191 women)
  • 72,971 killed (~22,000 children, 33,000 women and girls) since October 2023

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM ISRAEL:

Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel news accurately. IAK gets the facts – sometimes from Israeli media sites, where we can get a glimpse inside this country that is rife with turmoil and contradictions, and that receives $63 million a day from America.

Israeli media sources reported that one Israeli was killed and at least five were wounded on Sunday morning in what they described as a series of shootings at multiple locations in the Sharon region, near the Kokhav Yair settlement bloc south of the Palestinian city of Taybeh.

MORE NEWS & HEADLINES:

Israeli forces reportedly kidnapped five civilians during incursions into Syria’s Quneitra province on Sunday. This follows months of growing Israeli military activity inside southern Syria. Amnesty International reported that in recent months, Israeli forces have displaced Syrian families and demolished their homes, leaving them destitute. Amnesty concluded that “the destruction of and damage to civilian facilities in southern Syria occurred without absolute military necessity, in violation of international humanitarian law, and amounts to grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

*NOTE: Although Israel is not at war with Syria, the Israeli army has significantly and illegally expanded its military presence in southern Syria since the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024. Israeli forces have reportedly carried out over 1,600 violations inside Syrian territory since August 2025.

Israel has grabbed land and resources and demanded the demilitarization of southern Syria, allegedly to prevent any “potential threat” from post-war Syria – but has vowed to stay permanently in what seems to be an informal border expansion.

UK readies sanctions against Israel to deter proposed illegal West Bank settlement*: The UK Foreign Office and a group of western countries are due to announce a package of sanctions against Israel this week designed to deter companies from becoming involved in a proposed West Bank settlement that would split the territory in two and render the concept of a two-state solution near impossible.

*NOTE: More than 700,000 settlers live illegally on Palestinian land in over 500 settlements and settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. In a landmark advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land “illegal” and demanded the evacuation of all settlements.
