Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) will deliver a speech on the 59th anniversary of Israel’s June 8, 1967 attack on the USS Liberty. Massie’s speech to honor and memorialize the crew will be on Monday June 8th at noon on the floor of the House of Representatives.
This appears to be the first time that a sitting Congress member has defied the Israel lobby to support these American veterans in a Congressional speech.
Massie invited survivors to witness the speech in person, which will be broadcast live by C-SPAN. Approximately 20 Liberty crew members will be there along with their families.
The attack killed 34 and wounded over 170 American servicemen. There is substantial evidence that the attack was intentional. Admiral Thomas Moorer stated that “in attacking the USS Liberty, Israel committed acts of murder against American servicemen and an act of war against the United States.”
Some analysts suspect that a goal was to sink the ship, kill all aboard, and blame it on Egypt to justify getting the US to side with Israel in its Six Day War.
Alison Weir of If Americans Knew, who has often written and spoken about the Liberty and the subsequent cover up, will also be there.
