A message to mainstream media: Stop saying “ceasefire”

(Excerpted from The Intercept) The mainstream media (MSM) is perfectly comfortable spinning the fiction that we’re currently in a gray zone somewhere between war and peace with Iran, and Israel is between war and peace with Gaza – because the stakes are an abstraction.

To MSM, blindly supporting American imperialism and Israeli aggression are baked-in ideological assumptions, not matters of life or death. It’s no coincidence that the New York Times has done more than any other media organization to massage the language around Israel, Gaza, and Iran to an extreme degree.

But words like “ceasefire” matter a great deal, which is why it’s critically important for the media to call out acts of war for exactly what they are. In this way, the brutal fact of war is black and white: Your country is either killing people with the bombs it’s dropping, or it’s not. Failing to acknowledge that reality is worse than dishonest — it is to irrevocably deprive those paying the highest price of their humanity (read the full article here).

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM GAZA:

For some basic info on the Palestine-Israel conflict, go here. For more critical context, skim thisthis, and this. To read about a remarkable but underreported, 20-month-long peaceful protest in Gaza against Israel, go here.

A displaced Palestinian man was killed, and a woman succumbed to serious wounds, on Wednesday, as the Israeli army continued its violations of the ceasefire agreement for the 237th consecutive day. The Israeli military also killed two Palestinian brothers.

Rights group: More than 9,500 missing in Gaza since start of war: A new report titled Missing Palestinians in the Gaza Strip Amid the Genocidal War from  Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights said the 9,500+ cases of missing persons in Gaza fall into five main categories. Over 8,100 are trapped under debris; 250 went missing while traveling to obtain humanitarian aid; 350 crossed the border fence on October 7th and have not been heard from since; and over 800 Palestinians were detained by Israeli forces.

Israel is building more military posts in Gaza, satellite imagery shows: Israel was supposed to fully withdraw its troops from Gaza as part of the October 2025 ceasefire. Instead, Israeli forces are quietly cementing permanent, heavily fortified military posts across the besieged enclave. The distribution of these 40 military outposts, earthen berms, trenches, and internal military roads reveals a deliberate strategy of encirclement.

Israeli study finds starvation in Gaza was result of deliberate policy*: “Over the past two and a half years, Gaza has served to a large extent as a testing laboratory not only for methods of warfare, but also for the architecture of starvation and the management of a population through deprivation,” the report states. Titled Data for Denial: The Smokescreen Behind the Starvation of Gaza, the study was published last month in Hebrew.

*NOTE: Israel has been accused by reputable groups for over 2-1/2 years of intentionally starving the people of Gaza (at least 482 Gazans are known to have died of starvation/malnutrition). Some examples: UN experts, Defense for Children International, Doctors Against Genocide, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department’s refugees bureau, and the World Food Program

Even leaked documents from Israel’s war cabinet proved that the objective of the blockade was to cause starvation in Gaza.

Yet many chose instead to believe Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he said, “What a bold-faced lie. There is no policy of starvation in Gaza. And there is no starvation in Gaza.” Israeli Army spokesperson Effie Defrin similarly told NPR on July 27 that Hamas was trying to create “an image of starvation, which doesn’t exist.”

Intentionally using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare by depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including willfully impeding relief supplies as provided for under the Geneva Conventions” constitutes a war crime in international armed conflicts.

*NOTE: Anyone can visit the Al Aqsa Mosque grounds (known to Jews as the Temple Mount) but only Muslims are allowed to pray there, according to an understanding known as the ‘status quo agreement,’ under which, since 1967, Israel has formally pledged to allow Muslims to pray at the site, while Jews pray at the Western Wall below.

Israeli settlers are driving Palestinian shepherds from their grazing lands: “The [Israeli] soldiers got out of the vehicles on foot and came to us with the settlers. They stole 180 head of cattle, took them away, assaulted us, and shot one of my neighbours in the leg,” Abu Shaar told Al Jazeera. The army emptied the entire pen… and withdrew behind a cloud of tear gas, with a donkey and a car they found in the village in tow.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM ISRAEL:

Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel news accurately. IAK gets the facts – sometimes from Israeli media sites, where we can get a glimpse inside this country that is rife with turmoil and contradictions, and that receives $63 million a day from America.

In Netanyahu’s Israel, Personal Loyalty Tops Professionalism: “The 25th Knesset has already assured itself a place in history as the worst Knesset in Israeli history. And yet, even when we have zero expectations of it, it still manages to surprise us by hitting new lows, over and over again.”

ISRAELI MEDIA: How the U.S. Air Force Is Turning Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport Into Its Own Base: Some 75 U.S. refueling planes occupy more than half of Ben-Gurion Airport’s parking spots and fill up takeoff and landing slots. ISRAEL-US WAR/CEASEFIRE ON IRAN – NEWS & HEADLINES:

It can not be overemphasized that Israel is the impetus behind US policies and actions vis-a-vis Iran. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing the US to attack Iran for decades, using lies and deception. Under President Trump, he got his wish.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday accused the US of carrying out attacks on an Iranian oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and a communications tower on Qeshm Island from bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, and acknowledged that the IRGC attacked a US base in Kuwait and the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain in retaliation.

An investigation showed that a passenger terminal building at Kuwait International Airport had been struck by a US-made Patriot missile, not an Iranian missile, according to Iran’s IRGC spokesperson.

ISRAEL’S WAR/CEASEFIRE ON LEBANON – NEWS & HEADLINES:

Israel has invaded Lebanon seven times in the last half century. Between 1978 and 2000, Israel maintained an 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon — Hezbollah was formed to fight that occupation.

Israel has continued to wage fierce attacks across Lebanon, killing nine people and injuring others, even as US-mediated talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials progress in Washington. One attack directly targeted an ambulance, killing a paramedic and wounding another.

ISRAELI MEDIA: Israel and Lebanon (not Hezbollah) Agree to Renew Cease-fire, Create Lebanese Security Zones: The joint statement, co-signed by Washington, Jerusalem and Beirut, demands Hezbollah withdraw from southern Lebanon and halt cross-border fire. The deal is described as ‘progress toward a comprehensive peace and security agreement.’

What’s happening on the ground is nothing like a ceasefire: During a visit to the Haifa Naval Base Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said that in Lebanon, “there is no ceasefire for our forces,” and that operations are taking place “that cannot yet be disclosed to the public.” He added that the IDF “will seize every opportunity to remove threats to the citizens of Israel and to our forces.”

Reports on the ongoing US-hosted talks are that Israel is making clear irrespective of anything else, they neither intend to agree to a permanent ceasefire with Lebanon nor will they withdraw their ground troops from southern Lebanon.

DEATH TOLL – WAR ON LEBANON (tentative):

  • At least 3,516 people have been killed since war began on March 2, 2026
  • 25 Israelis—24 IDF soldiers and one civilian military contractor—have been killed over the same period

US Congressman Introduces Bill To Change US-Israel Relationship Based on Netanyahu’s Plan: Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN)’s bill calls for the US and Israel to form a new Memorandum of Understanding that would, in Netanyahu’s words, shift the framework for US-Israel defense cooperation from aid to partnership” because “the time has now arrived for us to move from aid recipient to partner.”

Stutzman’s bill would “replace traditional military assistance with a framework of joint defense codevelopment, coproduction, and mutual investment that will strengthen both nations’ defense industries and military readiness.”
