ISRAEL-US WAR/CEASEFIRE ON IRAN – NEWS & HEADLINES:

It can not be overemphasized that Israel has been the impetus behind US policies and actions vis-a-vis Iran for years. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing the US to attack Iran for decades, using lies and deception. Under President Trump, he got his wish.

The American people have made clear that they do not want to go to war with Iran, but Israel partisans and the Israel lobby use their massive political clout to bring about whatever is beneficial to Israel – including putting the US military in harm’s way. For more background on Israel’s role in American wars, watch IAK’s short film, “The Israeli Hit List.”

US vice president says Trump seeking ‘grand bargain’ with Iran: “He said that ‘if you’re willing to act like a normal country, we are willing to treat you economically like a normal country.’ He doesn’t want a small deal,” he added. “The reason why the deal is not yet done is because the president, he really wants a deal where Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

U.S sending thousands more troops to Middle East: While diplomatic efforts are underway to extend the ceasefire, the United States is sending thousands of additional troops into the Middle East in the coming days. The forces include 6,000 troops aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and several warships escorting it, and 4,200 others with the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and its embarked Marine Corps task force that are expected to arrive near the end of the month.

Iran demands compensation from Arab states over ‘direct involvement’ in US-Israeli war: Tehran’s UN envoy said Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Jordan allowed their territories to be used for attacks on the Islamic Republic. Iranian officials say the Israeli-US bombing campaign has caused about $270 billion in losses.

How much has the Israel-US war on Iran cost American taxpayers so far? The US has not published a full official account of what the war cost Washington since the Pentagon reported that the first six days alone cost the US $11.3 billion. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that battle damage alone has reached at least $3.5 billion over five weeks. Public policy experts at the Harvard Kennedy School, put the war’s cost to Washington at around $2 billion per day.

Israel’s defense ministry: war against Iran cost $13 billion

6 weeks of war has pushed millions of Iranians into poverty: But Washington should not assume that economic pressure alone can force the nation and its regime into submission.

Sanctioned tanker crosses Hormuz despite US blockade: International maritime tracking data on Monday evening showed that an Iranian “shadow fleet” oil tanker had successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz, despite the start of a US-imposed naval blockade on Iranian exports.

Trump Rejects Reports That US Proposed Iran Suspend Uranium Enrichment for 20 Years: “I’ve been saying they can’t have nuclear weapons, so I don’t like the 20 years,” the president said. When asked whether a 20-year moratorium could work as a deal, since it could allow Iran to sell it as a win, Trump said, “I don’t want them to feel like they have a win.”

Hegseth Impeachment Articles Land as Thousands More US Troops Deploy for Iran War: The new articles of impeachment unveiled by House Democrats accuse the Pentagon chief of directing an illegal war (at Israel’s urging) and backing deadly attacks on civilians.

Former US secretary of state says Netanyahu repeatedly pressed US presidents to strike Iran, only Trump agreed

Israel calls for zero enriched uranium in Iran

Trump accuses ally Meloni of lacking courage for not joining attacks on Iran: “I’m shocked at her. I thought she had courage, but I was wrong,”Trump said. His remarks come as the Italian PM suspends defense agreement with Israel amid growing domestic pressure over the conflict.

No diapers, no relief: Gaza’s infants face growing hygiene crisis because of Israeli restrictions: Away from the headlines, mothers are struggling to secure the most basic hygiene items for their babies. Diapers—once an ordinary necessity—have become scarce, unaffordable, and, for many, entirely out of reach, exposing the depth of the humanitarian collapse gripping the enclave.

OCHA Warns of Escalating Disease Risks in Overcrowded Camps: OCHA, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, reports a sharp rise in skin diseases across hundreds of displacement sites, alongside a widespread infestation of rodents and other pests. Humanitarian teams are reportedly working to combat pest infestations and improve sanitation but face severe operational challenges, including limited supplies, restricted access to many affected areas, and the ongoing collapse of basic services.

ISRAELI MEDIA: ‘Diseases Are Everywhere’: Gaza’s ‘Catastrophic’ Healthcare Crisis Is Worsening: Alongside a surge in diseases caused by insects, rodents and contaminated water, health officials and aid groups report that Israel’s restrictions have resulted in dire shortages of medicine and medical supplies. An estimated 1.2 million Gazans live in crowded tent camps.

When Israel destroyed Gaza’s courts, legal protections for women vanished: The decimation of Gaza’s judicial system has left hundreds of thousands of women unable to claim inheritance, get a divorce, or retain custody of their children. “That is the reality of women in Gaza. We are abandoned,” says Maysoun, a mother of two.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM THE OCCUPIED WEST BANK/EAST JERUSALEM:

Every day, Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem endure dozens of incidents like the ones below, at the hands of Israeli soldiers and/or settlers. For background on the West Bank, read this and thisFor information on the significance of Israeli settlers in the West Bank, read this and this.)

ISRAELI MEDIA: Newly Approved West Bank Settlements* to Be Built on Private Palestinian Land, Map Shows: Five of the settlements are planned for the northern West Bank, an area with no prior Israeli presence. Their location amid Palestinian villages is expected to require a significant military presence, which the IDF chief warned would stretch manpower.

*NOTE: More than 700,000 settlers live illegally on Palestinian land in over 500 settlements and settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Some settler groups have a history of violence against Palestinians, often with the assistance of Israeli military forces.  Learn more about Israeli settler violence here and here.

In a landmark advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land “illegal” and demanded the evacuation of all settlements. Israeli settlers are sometimes referred to as “colonizers.”

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM ISRAEL:

Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel news accurately. IAK gets the facts – sometimes from Israeli media sites, where we can get a glimpse inside this country that is rife with turmoil and contradictions, and that receives $63 million a day from America.

Israeli jailers assaulted Marwan Barghouti three times in a month, lawyer says: A campaign calling for Barghouti’s release on Tuesday described the incidents as “brutal attacks”. It said they took place while he was in solitary confinement in Israel. Barghouti was tortured “using various tools of repression and beatings, causing multiple injuries and bleeding across his body without medical treatment,” the campaign said, part of a “systematic series” of attacks that have continued since the start of Israel’s genocide on Gaza.

Israel is fighting Christian presence in Palestine, and Christian Zionists* must repent: Rev. Munther Isaac, pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beit Sahour, stresses that what Christians are experiencing cannot be separated from the broader reality of the Palestinian people amid checkpoints, restrictions on access to Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and repeated attacks without accountability.

*NOTE: Christian Zionism is antithetical to the teachings of Jesus. Much has been written in opposition to Christian Zionism – for example, read this and this and this. For a deep dive into the topic, go here.

Israel’s Top Court Hears Petitions to Remove Ben-Gvir From Post: According to the attorney general, there’s an urgent need to halt Ben-Gvir’s harm ‘to individual liberties and the structure of the democratic regime,’ caused by improper political interference in the police. ‘The time has come for a constitutional crisis,’ one Netanyahu minister called outside the court as Ben-Gvir lashed: ‘I was elected to govern.’

MORE NEWS & HEADLINES:

Why are Democratic leaders still ignoring voters on Israel? Last summer, a Quinnipiac Poll found that 77% of Democrats agreed that “Israel is committing genocide”. Last month, an NBC poll found that 67% of Democrats felt more sympathetic to Palestinians than Israelis, compared with 17% who felt more sympathetic to Israelis. But the DNC continues to operate as if fully sealed off from the party’s voters on such matters.

Voters Think Candidates Who Won’t Stand Up To AIPAC Won’t Fight On Other Issues, Either: New Poll: A new poll from Drop Site and Zeteo finds Democratic Senate voters in Michigan care more about limiting AIPAC’s influence than Hasan Piker’s.

Reform movement warns anti-AIPAC rhetoric among Democrats risks crossing into Jew-hatred*: To “disproportionately demonize AIPAC as a distinctively harmful dark-money entity crosses the line into antisemitic tropes about sinister Jewish political influence,” the URJ stated.

*NOTE: Actual antisemitism (i.e.”Jew-hatred”) is not as prevalent as Israel partisans – like the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ)  – would like us to think. A large portion of what they call antisemitism is simply criticism of Israel, the self-proclaimed “Jewish State,” in other words, opposition to Zionism.

Zionism is not a benign philosophy, but a supremacist ideology – the ideology under which Israel dispossessed 750,000 Palestinian people and exiled them to Gaza and other locations. The so-called “demonization” of Israel is in most cases a legitimate criticism of Israel’s policies of occupation, apartheid, and genocide, and other illegal practices.

Washington-Vatican feud deepens as JD Vance says pope should ‘stick to matters of morality’: “I certainly think that in some cases it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality, to stick to matters of what’s going on in the Catholic Church and let the president of the United States stick to dictating American public policy,” Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, told Fox News.
