IDF Pushes for Renewed Large-scale Gaza Offensive Citing Hamas* Resurgence

*NOTE: Israel’s framing of Hamas as terrorists is a political, not fact-based choice. Hamas was formed to resist occupation and oppression, not to “kill Jews.” In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance. Calling Hamas “terrorist” is an attempt to delegitimize the struggle of a people seeking freedom, justice, and self-determination.

In reality, Hamas has clearly and openly stated that its enemy is not the Jewish people, but the supremacist ideology of Zionism – the ideology under which Israel dispossessed 750,000 Palestinian people and exiled them to Gaza and other locations.

UN resumes medical evacuations* through Rafah crossing as Gaza access improves

*NOTE: Gaza’s Health Ministry recently reported that 17,757 Palestinians have referrals for medical treatment abroad, but Israel has permitted only 1,204 patients to leave through the Rafah and Kerem crossings since the beginning of the “ceasefire,” although the agreement stipulated the evacuation of 150 patients and relatives per day for three days a week (a total of about 15,750 by now). Over 1,000 have died already while waiting to evacuate.

Detained Gaza hospital director Abu Safiya appeals for his immediate release, calls detention ‘unjust’: “I carried out my work in accordance with international law and humanitarian standards, and my detention is unjust and arbitrary,” Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya told Israel’s Supreme Court in his first appearance in nearly a year. (Original story here.)

ISRAELI MEDIA: When Iran Attacks Israel, Palestinians in Gaza Are the First to Pay the PriceThe closure of Gaza’s border crossings due to Iranian missiles is not the story. The story is how familiar the sequence has become: A regional crisis erupts. Security measures are introduced. Gaza absorbs the cost. (Original story here.)

ISRAELI MEDIA: Depleted but dangerous, Hamas is holding its fire against Israel. The quiet may not last

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM THE OCCUPIED WEST BANK/EAST JERUSALEM:

Every day, Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem endure dozens of incidents like the ones below, at the hands of Israeli soldiers and/or settlers. For background on the West Bank, read this and thisFor information on the significance of Israeli settlers in the West Bank, read this and this.)

Israeli occupiers (i.e. settlers*) set fire to farmland in Christian-majority town, mayor says: ‘The attacks do not distinguish between Muslims and Christians. The occupiers want the land without its people,’ Taybeh mayor said. Israeli settlers and military reportedly impeded firefighting near the village.

*NOTE: More than 700,000 settlers live illegally on Palestinian land in over 500 settlements and settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Some settler groups have a history of violence against Palestinians, often with the assistance of Israeli military forces.  Learn more about Israeli settler violence here and here.

In a landmark advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land “illegal” and demanded the evacuation of all settlements. Israeli settlers are sometimes referred to as “colonizers.”

Many analysts believe the word “colonizer” is more accurate than “settler.” Zionism has been described by several scholars as a form of settler colonialism. Zionism’s founders and early leaders were aware and outspoken about their status as colonizers; early leading Zionists such as Theodor Herzl, Max Nordau, and Ze’ev Jabotinsky described Zionism as colonization.

IDF Sets Up First Permanent Military Outpost in Palestinian-controlled Area of West Bank Since Oslo Accords: The outpost was established near the Jenin refugee camp, which was cleared of its residents in January of last year. In legal documents obtained by Haaretz, the army claimed that the project was ‘intended to replace the presence of forces in the residents’ homes in the camp’ and that all ‘required approvals’ had been received.

ISRAELI MEDIA: ‘Jews are allowed, Arabs have to get out,’ armed settler tells Palestinians, activists: A Jewish settler, backed by IDF troops, sought to prevent Palestinians from working their own land; ‘Goal is expulsion of Palestinians from their land,’ says rights group.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM ISRAEL:

Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel news accurately. IAK gets the facts – sometimes from Israeli media sites, where we can get a glimpse inside this country that is rife with turmoil and contradictions, and that receives $63 million a day from America.

IRAN & LEBANON – NEWS & HEADLINES:

It can not be overemphasized that Israel is the impetus behind US policies and actions vis-a-vis Iran. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing the US to attack Iran for decades, using lies and deception. Under President Trump, he got his wish.

Israel has invaded Lebanon seven times in the last half century. Between 1978 and 2000, Israel maintained an 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon — Hezbollah was formed to fight that occupation.

IRAN: The US launched strikes against Iran on Wed. evening for the second consecutive evening. In response, Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz closed; CENTCOM denied that the strait was closed. Trump threatened another bombing Thu. night if Tehran doesn’t sign a U.S.-proposed deal. The strikes reportedly cut off water supplies for 20,000 Iranians, which may be a war crime

Iran claimed attacks on US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, and targeted two vessels in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the US’s most recent attacks, and declared the Strait of Hormuz “closed until further notice.”

Israel’s defense minister says war against Iran ‘far from over’: Military prepared to strike Iran with ‘great force,’ says Israel Katz.

LEBANON: IDF strikes killed 30 people and wounded 92 in Lebanon on Wednesday, the country’s Health Ministry said, raising the death toll to 3,696 since fighting began in March.

100 days of Israel’s war on Lebanon: more than 14,000 killed and wounded amid widespread destruction: More than one-third of the dead were killed during the “ceasefire,” and more statistics.
