GAZA FLOTILLA – NEWS & HEADLINES:

Read about the Gaza Flotilla 2025 missions here and here, and the deadly 2010 mission here; find out about the global flotilla movement here.

Flotilla activists detained by Israel ‘go on hunger strike’ as Spain vows to protect its citizens: Two flotilla activists detained by Israel, one of them Spanish, have gone on hunger strike as Spain called for their immediate release.

Spain demands Israel release arrested Gaza flotilla crew member: Saif Abukeshek, a Spanish-Swedish national of Palestinian origin, was among activists detained as Israeli military forces raided the Global Sumud Flotilla off the coast of Crete earlier this week. He was one of two men, alongside Brazilian Thiago Avila, then taken to Israel on Friday for “questioning”. Israel claims the two have ties to Hamas*, but has reportedly provided no evidence.

*NOTE: “Ties to Hamas” is one of two weak justifications that Israel and its supporters pull out when they want to delegitimize people who are merely protesting genocide (the other is “antisemitism“). Hamas is a political movement with an armed wing. Thousands of residents of Gaza work for Hamas, in the sense that they are government employees, and Hamas is the governing authority.

People employed, for example, in the ministries of health, transportation, agriculture, public works, and many other branches of the government are in that sense “affiliated with Hamas.” Anyone who has communicated with someone employed by the government – or a relative or neighbor of a government employee – can be accused of having “ties to Hamas.” The phrase is essentially meaningless.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM GAZA:

For some basic info on the Palestine-Israel conflict, go here. For more critical context, skim thisthis, and this. To read about a remarkable but underreported, 20-month-long peaceful protest in Gaza against Israel, go here.

Two Palestinians were killed Saturday in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, as violations of the ceasefire in place since last October continue, medical sources said.

Around 8,000 Palestinian bodies are believed to be trapped under the rubble in the Gaza Strip, where less than 1% of debris has been cleared after Israel’s two-year genocidal war on the enclave, according to an Israeli media report, citing a UN official. The slow pace of debris removal means the process could take up to seven years.

How Israel is weaponizing infectious diseases in Gaza: In Gaza, there is a lot of what we infectious disease specialists refer to as “drug-bug mismatch”—patients often get placed on antibiotics that are ineffective against the offending pathogen due to an Israel-induced limited antibiotic arsenal and a growing antibiotic resistance crisis. Patients unnecessarily die from often treatable infections because of delays in receiving effective antibiotic therapy.

Attempted sacrificial rites at the Temple Mount are treated as volatile provocations.

Footage shows Israeli occupier (i.e. settler*) desecrating Cathedral of Saint James in Jerusalem: Security camera footage, shared late Friday, shows the individual spitting multiple times on the entrance of the church, before raising his middle finger and using his other hand to mockingly form the shape of a cross.

*NOTE: More than 700,000 settlers (also referred to as occupiers or colonizers) live illegally on Palestinian land in over 500 settlements and settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Some settler groups have a history of violence against Palestinians, often with the assistance of Israeli military forces.  Learn more about Israeli settler violence here and here.

In a landmark advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land “illegal” and demanded the evacuation of all settlements.

ISRAEL-US WAR/CEASEFIRE ON IRAN – NEWS & HEADLINES:

It can not be overemphasized that Israel is the impetus behind US policies and actions vis-a-vis Iran. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing the US to attack Iran for decades, using lies and deception. Under President Trump, he got his wish.

The American people have made clear that they do not want the US embroiled in a war with Iran, but Israel partisans and the Israel lobby use their massive political clout to bring about whatever is beneficial to Israel – including putting the US military in harm’s way. For more background on Israel’s role in American wars, watch IAK’s short film, “The Israeli Hit List.

Report: Iranian Truce Proposal to U.S. Calls for End to War, Including in Lebanon: The proposed plan reportedly includes U.S. troop withdrawal and an end to the naval blockade. Trump said he would review the proposal but expressed doubt it would be accepted, saying that Iran ‘has not yet paid a big enough price.’

US threatens sanctions on ships paying for Hormuz passage: The US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) directive targets vessels that have coordinated safe transit through the Iranian-controlled route.

Iran says US not complying with nuclear non-proliferation treaty: ‘Legally, there is no restriction on the level of uranium enrichment, so long as it is conducted under the IAEA’s (International Atomic Energy Agency) supervision, as was the case with Iran,’ says Iran’s Mission to UN.

ISRAEL’S WAR/CEASEFIRE ON LEBANON – NEWS & HEADLINES:

Israel has invaded Lebanon seven times in the last half century. Between 1978 and 2000, Israel maintained an 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon — Hezbollah was formed to fight that occupation.

Although Israel signed a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon in November 2024, Israel has attacked Lebanon almost every day since, committing over 10,000 air and ground violations – the most violated ceasefire deal in recorded history – and killing at least 397. (Read about UNIFIL, the UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, here.)

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least 16 people on Saturday, as Tel Aviv continues to breach the ongoing ceasefire.

Israel army admits troops damaged Catholic ‘religious building’ in Lebanon: “It was determined that during the [Israeli] forces’ operations to destroy terrorist infrastructure, one of the houses located in a religious compound was damaged,” an Israeli spokesman said on X. He justified the presence of troops in the area by claiming that multiple rocket attacks had been launched by Hezbollah from within the compound.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM SYRIA:

Although Israel is not at war with Syria, the Israeli army has carried out over 1,000 airstrikes and 400 cross-border raids on Syria since December 2024. Israel has demanded the demilitarization of southern Syria, allegedly to prevent any “potential threat” from post-war Syria – but has vowed to stay permanently in what seems to be an informal border expansion.

Israeli forces raided villages in Syria’s Quneitra countryside on Saturday and opened heavy fire, SANA news agency reported.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM ISRAEL:

Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel news accurately. IAK gets the facts – sometimes from Israeli media sites, where we can get a glimpse inside this country that is rife with turmoil and contradictions, and that receives $63 million a day from America.

ISRAELI MEDIA: Ben-Gvir Celebrates Birthday With Golden Noose Cake, Far-right Crowd: Senior Israel police officers attended after the far-right minister’s invitation, alongside district commanders, the prisons chief, activist Benzi Gopstein – convicted of incitement to terrorism – and aide Osher Gabay, convicted of assaulting a Palestinian. Wording on the cake said, “Sometimes dreams come true.”

ISRAELI MEDIA: Netanyahu’s Exploitation of the Christian Right Is Blowing Up in His Face: The artificial alliance Netanyahu forged between the Christian right and the Jewish right has at its core an unpleasant theological tenet: The evangelicals expect Israel and the Jewish infidels to burn in hell in the war at Armageddon.

A letter of support signed by over 70 legal and human rights experts, urged the War Crimes Team to investigate. Ultimately, it declined.
