For a second time, Israel has allowed heavy machinery into Gaza to help find the bodies of Israeli captives, but not for digging out bodies of Palestinians who are trapped under the rubble.

The Israeli PM’s office says on X that three bodies of deceased Israeli captives have been received in Israel via the Red Cross. As per the terms of the ceasefire, Israel must now return the bodies of 45 dead Palestinian prisoners, 15 for each Israeli captive returned.

A measure of lives lost from The Lancet

A study published in The Lancet medical journal this week underscored the human toll of Israel’s genocide in Gaza. The report found that Gaza has lost more than a staggering three million years of human life since the start of the conflict in October 2023.

More than one million of those life-years were lost among children under the age of 15. The authors noted that their estimates were conservative and excluded deaths caused by starvation, lack of medicine, and the collapse of infrastructure under Israel’s siege.

Hamas rejects US accusation it looted aid trucks in Gaza

US CENTCOM published drone footage that allegedly showed an aid truck being looted on October 31, allegedly by Hamas members.

On Sunday, Hamas called the US accusations “unfounded” and “an attempt to justify the further reduction of already limited humanitarian aid,” adding that no aid groups or their drivers had filed any report or complaint about looting by Hamas.

The Hamas statement also criticized the US for failing to document the Israel’s attacks following the ceasefire agreement that killed 254 Palestinians and wounded 595: “The US adoption of the Israeli narrative only deepens Washington’s immoral bias and places it squarely as a partner in the blockade and the suffering of the Palestinian people” (continue reading here).

Palestinian detainee dies in Israeli prison after being denied care

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society has confirmed the death of 63-year-old Mohammed Hussein Ghawadra from Burqin, near Jenin, who died Sunday while being held by Israeli authorities.

Ghawadra, detained since August 2024, was denied essential medical treatment despite suffering from chronic illnesses, the group said. His death, it added, exposes Israel’s “systematic crimes” against Palestinian detainees, including routine medical neglect and physical and psychological abuse.

According to the organization, Ghawadra’s death raises the number of Palestinian prisoners killed in Israeli custody since October 2023 to 81. Since 1967, at least 318 Palestinians have died behind Israeli bars. Rights groups have repeatedly accused Israel of turning its prisons into “slow-death chambers.”

NEWS & HEADLINES ABOUT ISRAEL:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Hezbollah is seeking to rearm and Israel will exercise its “right to self-defense,” threatening Sunday to “act as necessary” if Lebanon does not take steps to disarm the group.

An Israeli attack has killed at least four people in southern Lebanon, putting more pressure on a nearly yearlong truce with Hezbollah. The attack came a day after Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of escalating violence in response to his offer to negotiate a more lasting end to the cross-border attacks.

Supreme Court hosts new exhibit about truth in art and in the judiciary*

Supreme Court President Isaac Amit inaugurated a new art exhibit on Sunday evening at the Supreme Court building, titled “Truth Shall Spring from the Earth,” which explores symbols and motifs that have shaped Israeli identity, society and heritage.

At the opening event, Supreme Court President Isaac Amit spoke about the exhibit’s title, taken from the Psalms verse: “Truth shall spring from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.”

He discussed the constant, necessary dialogue between heaven and earth, between heavenly truths setting the ideal standard of absolute justice and the truth that grows from the earth.

*NOTE: This event is ironic, given that Israel’s Supreme Court has consistently upheld unjust and apartheid policies against Palestinians, including evictions in East Jerusalem, demolition of homes and entire villages, open-fire policies against peaceful protesters, the sale of church property against the church’s will, and the use of torture on Palestinian detainees, to name just a few.

Israel’s Knesset Advances Death Penalty Bill for Terrorists* Who Kill Israelis

  • Far-right Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir vowed the law would remove judicial discretion and mark a ‘shift in Israel’s security doctrine.’

*NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance

On October 7th, Hamas was exercising – albeit imperfectly – its internationally recognized right to resist the oppressor and occupier of its people. Hamas fighters attacked Israel after years of oppression and many nonviolent attempts to call attention to the issue. The UN has passed hundreds of resolutions demanding justice – to no avail.

In fact, Israel has been oppressing Palestinians since its creation in 1948, and even before that.
