Israel’s killing of Gazans, including children, is unending – Not a Ceasefire, Day 25

Compilation of news reports – IAK staff

(While a “ceasefire” is ostensibly in place, Israel has continued its assault on Gaza without interruption. If Americans Knew considers the war to be ongoing, and in its 759th day.)

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza reports that 4 martyrs including 1 retrieved body and 7 injured people arrived at hospitals in the past 24 hours.

Since the “ceasefire” began, Israel has killed at least 240 Palestinians, including 97 children, with approximately 607 others injured.

Israel has violated the truce agreement at least 194 times.

Israel accused of planting booby-trapped toys to kill children in Gaza

Health Affairs director Munir Al-Bursh said, “In the narrow alleys and among the ruins of homes, the remains of rockets and unexploded shells are scattered…every day, hospitals receive the torn bodies of small children, severed limbs, and faces disfigured due to childhood curiosity and innocence.”

“The most dangerous of all remnants of war are those that resemble the devil in the face of an angel – booby-trapped toys: dolls, birds, and small teddy bears left to tempt the little ones. When a child reaches for the ‘beautiful toy’, the horrifying truth explodes in their face – that the army claiming morality has planted death in the heart of childhood itself.”

Israeli drone wounds three girls in strike on Gaza wedding

An Israeli drone launched at a wedding in Gaza wounded three girls, one of them a teenager.

The wedding was held in a school building in Gaza City’s Shejaiyah neighborhood, which is divided by the Yellow Line, marking IDF-controlled territory.

Residents do not know the exact location of the line.

Nasser hospital has received bodies of 45 Palestinians returned in the prisoner exchange, bringing the total number received from Israel to 270. Of those, only 78 have been identified, due to decomposition and, in many cases, signs of mutilation or torture.

Several Palestinian detainees from Gaza were set free by the Israeli army on Monday after months of detention, according to the Prisoners’ Information Office. Living Palestinian prisoners previously released by the Israeli army showed signs of abuse, malnutrition, and severe injuries caused by torture during their detention.

Half of UN-surveyed households in Gaza report no change or worsening access to food with northern areas cut off from aid convoys since September 12, while the others indicated they had seen some improvements.

The Israeli military claims that it struck “terrorists*” Monday in southern Gaza. They had allegedly crossed the so-called “yellow line” demarcating the area of the enclave currently under Israeli control, in what it said was a violation of the ceasefire. The location of the “line” is not known or marked clearly. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed for unknowingly approaching or crossing the line.

*NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance

On October 7th, Hamas was exercising – albeit imperfectly – its internationally recognized right to resist the oppressor and occupier of its people. Hamas fighters attacked Israel after years of oppression and many nonviolent attempts to call attention to the issue. The UN has passed hundreds of resolutions demanding justice – to no avail.

In fact, Israel has been oppressing Palestinians since its creation in 1948, and even before that.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “Do not leave Sudan alone as Gaza was left alone”

Lina Ghassan Abu Zayed, an optometrist and writer from Gaza, on the shared experiences of Gazans and Sudanese:

The blood spilled in Darfur is no different from the blood spilled here. The destruction of schools and hospitals in Khartoum and El-Fasher mirrors exactly what we have seen in our neighborhoods.

Shared pain connects us more than any geography or language. Gaza and Sudan, separated by sea and desert, share the same suffering. It is painful to realize that the world so often chooses to close the door on our cries.

Talking about Gaza is not enough, and talking about Sudan alone is not enough. We must connect the pain, to see that human suffering knows no borders.

Do not leave Sudan alone as Gaza was left alone. Speak, write, share, so that the world hears their cries and understands that humanity is not optional, but a duty we all must share.

OCCUPIED WEST BANK/EAST JERUSALEM HEADLINES:

Israeli Colonizer Kills a Palestinian Man in Hebron

An illegal Israeli colonizer shot and killed a Palestinian man, Ahmad Ribhi Al-Atrash, 35, on Monday, shooting him in the head with live ammunition at the northern entrance to Hebron city.

Media sources said that occupation forces invaded and blocked ambulance crews from reaching the wounded young man, leaving him to bleed on the ground.

Since the beginning of the year, Israeli forces and colonizers have killed 230 Palestinian citizens in the occupied West Bank, including 42 children and 6 women. 20 of the victims were from Hebron.

Israel advances new settlement* plan at Hebron market, Palestinian authorities say

In a statement, the municipality said the plan, issued by the Israeli Civil Administration’s Planning and Construction Committee, covers a total area of approximately 12,500 square meters.

The market was once a major produce center but was closed to Palestinians after the 1994 Ibrahimi Mosque massacre, when an extremist Israeli settler killed 29 Palestinians and wounded at least 125 others inside the holy site.

The municipality denounced the plan as “a blatant assault on its jurisdiction, and a clear infringement on the interests of the city and its residents,” adding that it breaches international humanitarian law, which prohibits the confiscation, exploitation, or destruction of Palestinian property without justification.

*NOTE: Israel has illegally built around 280 settlements on Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, which are home to more than 700,000 illegal settlers. Some settler groups have a history of violence against Palestinians, often with the assistance of Israeli military forces (a phenomenon that has grown significantly worse since October 7th, 2023).

In a landmark advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land “illegal” and demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israel’s continued withholding of tax revenues from the Palestinian Authority (PA) could lead to its collapse, disrupting essential public services and paralyzing its ability to function according to the Palestinian foreign minister. Since 2019, Israel has deducted portions of these funds under various pretexts, amounting to roughly $3 billion, according to Palestinian estimates.

MORE WEST BANK HEADLINES:

The following incidents illustrate Israel’s strategy – often carried out by extremist settlers with backing from Israeli forces – to destabilize Palestinian communities and entrench military control, to restrict Palestinian farmers’ access to their lands, particularly in Area C, and to facilitate the expansion of illegal Israeli colonies.

Israeli soldiers convicted of raping Palestinian detainee in Sde Teiman boast about crime

Israeli soldiers convicted of torturing and sexually assaulting a Palestinian detainee at the notorious Sde Teiman prison gave a press conference Monday outside the Israeli Supreme Court. They wore black masks to conceal their identities.

Israeli Channel 7 quoted one who was identified by the initial “A”: “I stand here today because I am tired of silence. Instead of appreciation, we received accusations — instead of thanks, there was silence, We were not allowed to respond or explain; we were given a show trial before cameras, and you had already decided who was guilty.”

He added, “We will not remain silent. We will keep fighting for justice and for our families. Maybe you tried to break us, but you forgot that we are the strength of a hundred men.”

‘No such thing as Jewish terrorist*’ says Israeli MP sponsoring bill to execute Palestinians

An Israeli lawmaker from Itamar Ben Gvir’s far-right Jewish Power party has sponsored a bill imposing a death penalty for “terrorists,” saying that it will only apply to “those who harm the State of Israel” and will exclude Jews: “there’s no such thing as a Jewish terrorist,” he explained.

The bill would allow Israeli courts to impose the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis on “nationalistic grounds,” but not on Israelis who kill Palestinians under similar circumstances.

Israeli Air Force failed to act on warning signs before Oct. 7 events, probe reveals

Israeli attacks in Lebanon have killed two people and wounded seven, according to the Lebanese health ministry, a day after Israel threatened to ramp up attacks it says would target Hezbollah. Israel has attacked Lebanon almost daily since a ceasefire took effect almost a year ago.

The Israeli army staged a new incursion into Syria, attacking several villages in the Quneitra countryside on Monday, in the latest violation of the country’s sovereignty. After the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, a move that violated the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with Syria.

Israel’s Legislature Advances Bill Expanding Government Control Over Media

Right-wing Minister Shlomo Karhi’s bill that would dramatically overhaul Israel’s media landscape passed its first reading in the Knesset early Tuesday, with 54 lawmakers voting in favor and 47 against.

The legislation would give the government significant control over broadcast media, news sites and other media, by establishing a new regulatory council, with a majority of members chosen by the communications minister, that would have an array of authorities over broadcast media, including the ability to issue hefty fines.

The attorney general, opposing the legislation, has advised that it presents “real concern of severe harm to freedom of expression and freedom of the press” (continue reading here).

The cruelest of Israel’s many cruel attacks

Of the thousands of bombs that have fallen – and fall still – on Gaza, there is one to which former chair of the UN’s Commission of Inquiry Navi Pillay returns: a lone shell, fired by the Israel Defense Forces at the Al-Basma fertility clinic in December 2023. A single strike that wiped out 4,000 embryos in a moment.

The strike was “intended to prevent births” among Palestinians in Gaza, says Pillay, the former chair of the UN’s Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Territory of Palestine and Israel.

“That clinic stands alone in the grounds, separate from the rest of the hospital buildings. They didn’t fire on the hospital – if the excuse is that Hamas is hiding in the hospitals, they didn’t touch the hospital. They came straight to this building and targeted and hit the nitrogen tanks that kept the embryos alive” (continue reading here).

U.S. seeks UN approval for Gaza security force with broad two-year mandate

The U.S. sent several UN Security Council members a draft resolution on Monday for the establishment of an international force in Gaza for a duration of at least two years, according to a copy obtained by Axios.

The draft resolution, which was designated “SENSITIVE BUT UNCLASSIFIED,” would give the U.S. and other participating countries a broad mandate to govern Gaza and provide security through the end of 2027, with the possibility of extensions after that.
