Despite what appears to be mounting obstacles, it is the ordinary people who choose to take part in the face of all the odds that give this movement its power.
Rabbi Michael Henkin, one of the leaders of “the religious left,” whose members are in contact with Christian clergy in Jerusalem and the West Bank, says that a new ethos has developed in Israeli society, according to which anything perceived as different is a threat. Hence, while street signs say “Armenian Patriarchate Street,” some call it “Spitting Street.”
This is a relationship without parallel in which the largest economic & military power the world has known, subordinates itself to a tiny country that would otherwise be almost entirely inconsequential. Not only systematically redistributing its own wealth to that tiny, well-off country, but unconditionally embracing that country’s geopolitical agenda, and taking extreme actions on behalf of that country in a way that causes immense harm to its own interests, while also inflicting death, displacement and despair on millions of innocents.
An entire street is leveled. Houses and shops are flattened, including a popular cafe. This is what is left of the town of Bint Jbeil, just a couple of miles from the Israeli border, nearly two months after Israel relaunched its ground offensive in southern Lebanon.
