Israel, that “beacon of democracy,” is repressing free speech as it imprisons – and re-imprisons – young Palestinian activists. (Since the beginning of Israel’s occupation of Gaza & the West Bank, it has arrested more than 800,000 Palestinians, almost 20% of the total and about 40% of male Palestinians in the occupied territories.)
Liberal Israeli society is stepping up to advocate for African asylum seekers that their government is trying to deport. Despite official reports by the Red Cross and a prison doctor, Israel did not permit Hussein Hosni Atallah necessary treatment for his cancer. Rights groups charge that the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) has adopted a policy of deliberate medical neglect against prisoners and detainees.
