Israel expels tens of thousands from Gaza City as army readies for major assault
According to Gaza’s Civil Defense rescue and support agency, Israeli expulsion orders and attacks have displaced around 70,000 Palestinians – however, Israel’s military puts that number much higher – at around 300,000 people* – including 20,000 Palestinians that it says left Gaza City overnight.
According to Muneer al-Boursh, the director general of the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza, since 13 August, at least 1,890 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli assault on the city, with nearly 40 percent of the victims children (482), women (174) and the elderly (57).
NOTE: Israel’s notion that 300,000 Palestinians have left Gaza City gives it a freer hand to destroy whatever is left of the city by assuming it is for the most part uninhabited. While Israel has offered “warnings,” many Palestinians consider these pointless and absurd, as the cost of fleeing Gaza City is exorbitant, and they have no money left. Others are aware that if they leave, they will never return, and that is unacceptable.

Israel launches ‘most violent’ strikes on Gaza since 7 October
The Israeli army has been launching some of its heaviest airstrikes on the Gaza Strip since the start of its genocidal war in October 2023.
According to an Al-Mayadeen correspondent, these are “the most violent attacks” since 7 October.
“Over the past few hours, the Israeli army has conducted extensive bombing operations in southern Gaza City, intensifying its artillery bombardment of the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood with the aim of accelerating forced displacement. It has also launched intense airstrikes on the area since,” the correspondent said.

Israeli army bombs another high-rise building in Gaza City
The Israeli military bombed and destroyed the Al-Kawthar residential tower in western Gaza City on Sunday, in the latest attacks targeting high-rise buildings as the army expanded its offensive to occupy the city.
Witnesses said fighter jets struck the tower shortly after the army issued immediate evacuation orders for its residents and nearby tents.

Palestinian groups accuse Israel of “liquidating” prisoner before release
In a joint statement, the Palestinian Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club accused Israeli authorities of carrying out an assassination [attempt] inside interrogation cells against Mahmoud al-Wardian, 48, from Bethlehem. The groups said he was released only after his health deteriorated severely.
According to the statement, Israeli forces arrested al-Wardian on 18 August at his home in Bethlehem and transferred him to Ofer Prison, west of Ramallah, for interrogation, while denying him access to his lawyer; a week later, he was moved from Ofer Prison to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem in critical condition. The statement added that he arrived unconscious and was admitted to intensive care, despite having had no prior health issues before his arrest.
NOTE: Israel has been known to abruptly release prisoners when they become seriously ill or badly injured (often from torture). Analysts suggest that releasing such prisoners enables Israel to avoid the expense of treating them, or to avoid counting them as prison deaths if they do not survive.

Israeli army chief Zamir says Hamas will not be defeated even if Israel occupies Gaza City
Israeli Channel 12 reported on Sunday that the Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, Eyal Zamir, told political leaders that Hamas cannot be defeated either militarily or politically, even if Israel occupies Gaza City.
This comes as Israeli forces expand their operations in Gaza City under orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demolishing entire residential areas despite repeated warnings that such actions could endanger the lives of hostages.
According to the channel, Zamir told the government that the ground operation the army is preparing to launch in Gaza City “will not bring a complete victory.”

Far-right Minister Ben-Gvir Proposes Neighborhood for Israeli Police Officers in Gaza
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said at a police ceremony on Monday, “I want to build a residential neighborhood for police officers in Gaza. On the seashore, by the way, a perfect spot.”
Ben-Gvir added: “We’ll set up a splendid police neighborhood there, high-rise buildings, fully designed, and God willing, we will win.”
“Settlement brings security,” he said. “It’s time to encourage emigration, and the time has come to pass the death penalty law for terrorists.” His remarks were met with applause from the officers in the audience.

UK bars Israelis from top military academy over Gaza war
The UK will no longer admit Israelis to one of its most prestigious defense academies, the Royal College of Defense Studies, citing Israel’s conduct in Gaza, The Telegraph reported Sunday. The Ministry of Defense said Israel’s actions in Gaza were “wrong,” and that the government had decided to withhold access to the college as a result.
Amir Baram, director general of Israel’s Defense Ministry and himself a graduate of the college, called it “a profoundly dishonorable act of disloyalty to an ally at war,” and called it a “a discriminatory act” and “a disgraceful break with Britain’s proud tradition of tolerance and plain decency.”
The college has trained senior officers and officials from around the world since 1927, and this is the first time Israelis have been barred from the institution.

A Newspaper Called His Gaza Photos “Hamas Propaganda.” He’s Fighting Back.
Anas Zayed Fteiha, a Palestinian photojournalist in the Gaza Strip, filed a legal claim seeking an injunction against global publishing giant Axel Springer, which he accuses of violating his constitutional rights by falsely portraying him as a Hamas propagandist in Germany’s largest tabloid, BILD, on August 5 under the headline “This Gaza photographer stages Hamas propaganda.”
The filing against a European news organization is a first-of-its-kind legal strategy for a journalist working in Palestine. “I want to prove the truth cannot be erased by false allegations,” Fteiha told The Intercept.
Fteiha’s legal action could test whether German courts are willing to hold one of the country’s most powerful media outlets accountable for defamatory coverage that critics say has fueled the dehumanization of Palestinians (continue reading here).
