BREAKING: Israel’s defense chief Katz boasts Gaza City ‘is burning’ as army begins ground invasion

Many Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the army announced the start of a ground invasion in Gaza City on Tuesday. The deadly assault was met with celebration in Israel, as Defense Minister Israel Katz exclaimed that “Gaza [City] is burning.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the launch of “a powerful operation in Gaza,” saying that Rafah and Khan Younis in the south are under attack, in addition to Gaza City in the north. “The IDF is striking the terror infrastructure* with an iron fist… We will not relent and we will not back down, until the mission is completed.”

Ahead of the renewed operation in the city, heavy Israeli bombardment was reported across north and central Gaza Strip overnight.

Ha’aretz reports: IDF Spokesperson in Arabic, Avichay Adraee, stated that 40 percent – hundreds of thousands – of Gaza City residents have evacuated** [Gaza’s Civil Defense rescue and support agency, put the number much lower, at around 70,000 Palestinians]. Eyewitnesses said that thousands were forced to stay in the street overnight, fearing Israeli strikes on their homes.

*NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance. Hamas has clearly and openly stated that its enemy is not the Jewish people, but the supremacist ideology of Zionism – the ideology under which Israel dispossessed 750,000 Palestinian people and exiled them to Gaza and other locations.

**Israel’s notion that 40% of Palestinians have left Gaza City gives it a freer hand to destroy whatever is left of the city by assuming it is for the most part uninhabited. While Israel has offered “warnings,” many Palestinians consider these pointless and absurd, as the cost of fleeing Gaza City is exorbitant, and they have no money left. Others are aware that if they leave, they will never return, which they consider unacceptable. In addition, the area they are being directed to in the south is full beyond capacity and lacks even the most basic necessities – in addition to its being bombed regularly.

What Israel frames as a humanitarian gesture, warning of strikes ahead of time, ignores these facts.

Israeli army ‘in the dark’ about Gaza City occupation plan: Report

Israeli army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has told members of the Knesset Subcommittee for Intelligence, “The prime minister is not telling us what comes next, we don’t know what to prepare for,” the army chief said, according to Israeli news site Ynet. “If they want a military government, then they should say military government,” he added.

Zamir also reportedly referred to the deadly US-Israeli aid mechanism, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), as a “failure” (continue reading here).

Israel says UN’s investigation of genocide in war on Gaza ‘fabricated’

Israel hit back against the findings of the United Nation’s top investigators stating that Israel has conducted a genocide in its war on Gaza.

“The report relies entirely on Hamas falsehoods, laundered and repeated by others,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Previously, Israel has rejected UN investigations that concluded it had deliberately sought to destroy the healthcare system in the strip, accusing the investigators of being biased.

UN experts urge Israel to end its financial stranglehold on OPT

UN human rights experts on Monday warned, “Economic life in Gaza has been decimated by sheer physical destruction, blockade and siege, and repeated forced displacement,” the experts said in a statement. They noted that unemployment has surged above 80%, GDP has collapsed, and famine has been declared.

The experts described a liquidity crisis in Gaza, with banks and ATMs destroyed and Israel blocking the inflow of new currency. Cash scarcity has driven soaring prices; cooking oil rose by 1,200% and flour by 5,000% by mid-2025. Humanitarian workers reportedly lose nearly 40% of their salaries to access wages.

“The disproportionate civilian harm caused by Israel’s blockade and siege violates international humanitarian law and the economic and social rights of Palestinians,” the experts said (continue reading here).

80 Israeli economists warn Gaza reoccupation to spark ‘severe economic crisis’

Dozens of Israel’s leading economists warned Monday that a full military reoccupation of the Gaza Strip would push the country into an unprecedented economic downturn.

In a statement reported Monday by the Israeli outlet Walla, more than 80 academics and former senior officials at the Finance Ministry and Bank of Israel said the plan would “weaken Israel’s financial foundations” and create a direct threat to national security.

They argued that the cost of administering Gaza, combined with military spending, would require tens of billions of shekels and force tax increases, cuts to public services, and potentially a downgrade of Israel’s credit rating.

NETANYAHU ACKNOWLEDGES ISRAEL IS ISOLATED: Netanyahu says Israel is entering a “kind of isolation” and will be forced to adapt its economy to this new reality, Israeli Army Radio reports. He made the comments as leaders from Arab and Muslim countries are meeting in Qatar to form an official response to Israel’s attack on Doha last week, which has been condemned worldwide.

ISRAELI FM CALLS SPANISH PM “ANTISEMITE AND A LIAR”: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar responded to the Spanish prime minister’s call to ban Israel from sporting events by calling him “an antisemite and a liar” on Monday. In a post on X (now apparently deleted), Sa’ar said Pedro Sanchez “and his Communist government are antisemites and enemies of the truth”.

Rubio pledges unwavering US support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza, calls Palestinians ‘barbaric animals’

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday, “The people of Gaza deserve a better future … that future cannot begin until Hamas is eliminated. You can count on our unwavering support and commitment to make this happen,” he added.

Rubio went on to describe Palestinians as “barbaric animals” while referencing the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack on Israeli settlements and military bases that sparked Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. “This is where this all began,” he stated.

NOTE: Rubio’s comment (a pro-Israel talking point) implies that history began on October 7th, as though the Hamas fighters attacked Israel for no reason. In fact, Israel has been oppressing Palestinians since its creation in 1948, and even before that.

The people of Palestine have many legitimate grievances for which resistance is an appropriate response. Israel is, according to the International Court of Justice, plausibly committing genocide, illegal occupation, apartheid, extermination, and a targeted campaign of starvation – to name a few.

International law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, even to the point of armed resistance.

Trump received early warning from Israel about Qatar strikes: Report

A senior Israeli official told Axios, regarding Israel’s recent strike on Doha, “Trump knew about the strike before the missiles were launched. First, there was a discussion on the political level between Netanyahu and Trump, followed by one through military channels. Trump didn’t say no.”

Another official is quoted as saying that “if Trump had wanted to stop it, he could have. The missiles were not fired when Netanyahu called Trump, giving enough time for the Americans to react.”

The White House maintains that it was only notified once the missiles were already in the air, leaving Trump with no chance to oppose the strike or warn his Qatari partners.

In the wake of the Axios article, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office reiterated in an X post that Israel’s attack on Hamas leaders in Doha was a “wholly independent” Israeli operation.

Spain’s PM calls for Israel sports ban as rocket-launcher contract reportedly canceled

Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called for Israel to be barred from international sports competitions for as long as its “barbarism” in Gaza continues, as the Spanish government reportedly cancelled a contract worth nearly €700m ($800 million) for Israeli-designed rocket launchers.

The cancellation, reported by local media, Haaretz and Agence France-Presse, came after Sánchez announced last week that his government would “consolidate in law” a ban on military equipment sales or purchases with Israel over its offensive in Gaza (continue reading here).
