Infant paralyzed by polio in Gaza as WHO struggles to launch broad vax campaign
The Cradle reports:
The WHO confirmed that a 10-month-old baby in Gaza is now paralyzed due to polio, the first case in more than 25 years, UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini stated on 23 August.
“Polio will not make the distinction between Palestinian & Israeli children,” Lazzarini wrote while announcing the beginning of a UNRWA campaign to give Palestinian children in Gaza the polio vaccine through WHO clinics and mobile health teams.
“Delaying a humanitarian pause will increase the risk of spread among children,” he added.
“It is not enough to bring the vaccines into Gaza and protect the cold chain. To have an impact, the vaccines must end up in the mouths of every child under the age of 10.”
The Israeli military body responsible for Palestinian civilian affairs, COGAT, announced last week it is “preparing to support a comprehensive vaccination campaign.” The military said a vaccination campaign has begun for all Israeli ground troops and that it was working with aid agencies to deliver vaccines into Gaza.
Joe Biden Appoints Hawkish Official To Lead Israel Policy At State Department
The Huffington Post reports:
The Biden administration on Friday tapped Mira Resnick, an official deeply involved in weapons transfers to Israel, for a new role shaping policy at the State Department on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to two people familiar with the move.
The decision surprised some foreign policy professionals and was seen as particularly alarming by skeptics of President Joe Biden’s near-total backing of Israel’s devastating ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
Resnick previously worked at the State Department’s Political-Military Affairs bureau, which has approved billions in arms shipments to Israel during the Gaza war despite concerns from lawmakers and human rights groups that Israel is violating U.S. and international law in its use of American weaponry.
“Assigning [Resnick] … reflects a doubling down on the administration’s determination to continue to provide unconditional material support for Israel’s genocidal campaign against civilians in Gaza,” argued Annelle Sheline, a former State Department official who quit the agency in protest over Biden’s approach earlier this year.
A State Department spokesperson declined to comment for this story.
As the new deputy assistant secretary for Israeli-Palestinian affairs in the department’s Middle East office, Resnick is replacing Andrew Miller, an official who left the State Department this summer and was known by fellow U.S. officials to be wary of Biden’s overwhelming support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Miller was known as someone who understood the nuances of the situation and did his best to try to push back on the administration’s determination to facilitate genocide. Whereas DAS Resnick will eagerly support it,” Sheline said.
The Hill quoted Resnick in 2023: “I’ve been interested in foreign policy for as long as I can remember,” says Resnick, who grew up in California. “The U.S.-Israel relationship was a private focus in my household because of my Jewish background, but also because we were just a politically aware family.”
The Jerusalem Post listed Resnick #16 in its Top 50 Most Influential Jews of 2022
“A driver of bipartisan consensus, she has worked on a wide range of topics, such as weapons transfers, sanctions, human rights, and foreign assistance.”
Resnick participated at The Jerusalem Post Conference in New York and said the US is interested in being involved in a joint regional missile defense against Iran.
Resnick spoke at the conference enthusiastically about Israel’s expanding its diplomatic relations throughout the Middle East.
Common Dreams reports: She also worked with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow private American citizens to donate equipment to the Israel military.
Humanitarian access worsening in Gaza despite promises: Norwegian NGO
Jan Egeland tweeted:
Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) chief Jan Egeland says Israel and its Western allies have not made good on months of promises that “the hemorrhage of civilian lives would stop and that humanitarian access would improve” in Gaza.
In a social media post, Egeland said aid workers with the NRC and other groups had to again flee their posts this week due to the violence, “abandoning our shelters, offices and warehouses”.
Israel has “progressively reduced the so-called ‘humanitarian zone’”, he added, leaving “countless civilians trapped with no means of escape”.
Aid organisations received less than half of the aid needed for the people of Gaza in April, Egeland said, and by July, the number of deliveries to starving Palestinians had dropped by another 80 percent.
“NRC aid has been blocked for months, with only 2 trucks getting through since May – one of which was looted,” he said.

Israel turns ‘safe humanitarian zones’ into rubble, leaves only 9.5% of Gaza for civilians to shelter
Middle East Monitor reports:
Israeli forces have turned the designated “safe humanitarian zones” within the Gaza Strip into heaps of rubble and ashes, leaving only 9.5% of the territory as so-called “safe zones” for displaced civilians, the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza said on Saturday. A summary of the shrinking “safe” space:
November 2023: 89 square miles or 63% of Gaza’s total area
Early December 2023: 54 square miles, or 38.3% of Gaza’s total area
May 2024: 30.5 square miles, or 20% of Gaza’s total area
Mid-June 2024: 23 square miles, or 16.4% of Gaza’s total area
Mid-July 2024: 18.5 square miles, or 13.15% of Gaza’s total area
August 2024: 13.5 square miles, or 9.5% of Gaza’s total area
“If evacuation orders are meant to protect civilians, the reality is that they are achieving the exact opposite.”
OCHA reports:
Three orders issued by the Israeli authorities in just two days affect 146 displacement sites, with those affected by such orders so far in August reaching as many as 250,000.
The amount of humanitarian food assistance that entered southern Gaza in July was one the lowest recorded since October 2023. The Food Security Sector (FSS) has warned that ongoing intense fighting, damaged roads, a breakdown of law and order, and access challenges along the main humanitarian route between the Kerem Shalom Crossing and Khan Younis and Deir al Balah have led to critical food shortages.
As a result, more than one million people in southern and central Gaza may not receive food rations for August. Repeated evacuation orders and population displacement, coupled with dire shortages of cooking gas, have significantly disrupted the operation of kitchens and bakeries.
At least 50 kitchens have been forced to either suspend cooked meal provision or relocate due to repeated evacuation orders and since early July only 13 out of 19 bakeries supported by humanitarian partners are presently operational in the Strip.
In northern Gaza, food insecurity and malnutrition are even more alarming as no commercial supplies are known to have reached the area for more than three consecutive months, according to the Food Security Sector. This has resulted in a lack of protein sources on the local market, with only a few types of locally grown vegetables available at exorbitant prices.
In July, the number of children diagnosed with acute malnutrition in northern Gaza was four times higher than in May, whereas in the south it more than doubled.
Only one per cent of children in northern Gaza and six per cent in the south were able to receive the recommended dietary diversity.
The number of children diagnosed with acute malnutrition through mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) screenings increased by over 300 per cent in the north in July, compared with May, and by 156 per cent in the south.
On 22 August, Muhannad Hadi, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, issued a statement saying, “Civilians are exhausted and terrified, fleeing from one devastated place to another, with no end in sight. This cannot continue. He further emphasized that, “If evacuation orders are meant to protect civilians, the reality is that they are achieving the exact opposite.”
Israeli soldiers share videos documenting ‘war crimes’ in Gaza
Andalou Agency reports:
In a disturbing revelation, Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi shared on Friday social media posts on his X account that included footage recorded by an Israeli soldier in Gaza, raising concerns about potential “war crimes” in the conflict zone.
The footage has sparked outrage, depicting acts of violence and destruction carried out by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians and their properties.
The videos, which were quickly shared by activists across social media platforms, include footage of Israeli soldiers arresting individuals in Gaza and destroying a mosque.
Other clips reveal horrifying scenes of Palestinian bodies left in the streets to be scavenged by stray dogs.
One particularly shocking video shows Israeli military vehicles bulldozing Palestinian graves in a blatant violation of the sanctity of the deceased.
In other clips, soldiers can be heard laughing and celebrating as they blow up homes belonging to Gaza residents.

Israel’s presence in a post-war Gaza ‘legally wrong’: UN expert

ICC prosecutor calls on judges to rule on Netanyahu, Sinwar arrest warrants
Al Jazeera reports:
The International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has filed a brief urging a panel of pre-trial judges to “urgently render its decisions” on the requests he filed in May.
Citing possible war crimes and crimes against humanity, Khan had requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
Khan had also sought warrants for Hamas officials Mohammed Deif, who Israel said it killed in a Gaza strike, and Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran last month in an attack widely believed to have been carried out by Israel.
Prosecutor Khan said that “any unjustified delay in these proceedings detrimentally affects the rights of victims”.

‘No one has any money’: Israel’s restrictions stifle West Bank economy
The Guardian reports:
For better or worse, the Israeli and Palestinian economies are deeply intertwined: Israel relies on cheaper Palestinian labour, particularly in construction and agriculture, and before the war higher Israeli wages generated an estimated 20% of the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) GDP. In 2022, these workers contributed £3.05bn (about $3.4 billion) to the Palestinian economy, two-thirds of the PA’s total budget.

AntiWar: Blinken “sentenced ceasefire talks to death’ with comments on Netanyahu
View this post on Instagram
STATISTICS OCTOBER 7 – AUGUST 23:
Palestinian death toll from October 7, 2023 – August 23, 2024: at least 40,971* (40,334 in Gaza* – 11,445 women (30%), 16,251 children as of July 22. [The Ministry’s figures have been contested by the Israeli authorities, although they have been accepted as accurate by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and WHO. These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.]
This is expected to be a significant undercount since thousands of those killed have yet to be identified – and at least 637 in the West Bank (~147 children). This does not include an estimated 10,000 more still buried under rubble (4,900 women and children). Euro-Med Monitor reports 46,848 Palestinian deaths.
Lancet: “Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death9 to the 37,396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza.
Ralph Nader earlier estimated 200,000 Palestinians may have been killed in Gaza.
-
-
- At least 45 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (27 from Gaza, 18 from West Bank).
- At least 41 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition**.
- About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
- Almost 500,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.
-
Palestinian injuries from October 7 – August 23: at least 98,776 (including at least 93,356 in Gaza and 5,420 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how man Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]
Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – August 23, 2024: ~1,457 (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 279*** military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza; 25 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.
NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.
*Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.
**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.
***Approximately ten of the deaths listed above were Israeli soldiers killed by Hezbollah in fighting at the Israel-Lebanon border. The figure does not include the reportedly 53 Israeli soldiers – nearly 16% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.
† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.
