Winter weather begins in earnest as Gazans wait on Israel for shelter – Not a Ceasefire Day 37

Compilation of news reports – IAK staff

(While a “ceasefire” is ostensibly in place, Israel has continued its assault on Gaza without interruption. If Americans Knew considers the war to be ongoing, and in its 770th day.)

Since the “ceasefire” began on October 11, Israel has killed at least 260 and injured 632. Death toll figures are tentative.

Israel has so far violated the 11 October ceasefire deal in Gaza at least 282 times.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health announced the receipt of 15 bodies of martyrs released Friday by the Israeli occupation through the International Committee of the Red Cross, bringing the total number of bodies received to 330. So far, just 97 of the 330 bodies released and received by the occupation have been identified, due to decomposition and/or mutilation.

Winter storm collapses Gaza tents, as Israel keeps shelter supplies just out of reach

Tents sheltering displaced civilians in Gaza have failed to withstand the winter’s first raindrops, with some tearing apart, leaving families exposed with no cover at all.

As heavy rain fell, thousands of displaced families found themselves in a new struggle with the storm, just as they had struggled before against starvation and two years of Israeli attacks.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said at a news conference, “Millions of urgently needed shelter items remain stuck in Jordan and in Egypt and Israel as well, awaiting approval to enter Gaza,” He said that since the ceasefire, Israeli authorities have blocked “nearly 4,000 pallets of critical supplies, including tents, sealing and framing kits, bedding, kitchen sets, and blankets.”

NOTABLE QUOTES: Gazans Reflect on Surviving to See a Ceasefire

Hala Asfour, a 24-year-old filmmaker and photographer:

There’s no triumph in surviving. It’s a different kind of pain. You wake up every day carrying the guilt of still being alive when others—people you loved—are gone and didn’t make it till the end. We survived to tell their stories, to honor them, but survival isn’t a privilege. Life feels fragmented, but with each child’s laugh, with every sunrise piercing the ruins, we inch toward the possibility of breathing—just a little. Not because we are OK, but because we have to try.

Anas Zayed Fteiha, a 31-year-old photojournalist with Anadolu Agency:

The war has not really ended. For mothers who lost their children, for those who lost limbs, for families left homeless—the war never stopped. I feel relief, but fear persists. There’s comfort in not hearing the explosions daily, but the trauma is not gone. This genocide stole many friends and colleagues — and my home, the house I grew up in. Our lives have shattered. Gaza is no longer a livable place. Sometimes we envy the martyrs who were killed — they’ve survived the pain and suffering we now face.

Nooh Al-shaghnobi, 24, a civil defense worker:

We’re living in a city of ghosts. Honestly, those who died are the ones who really survived. Yet for those of us who survived, it’s like living in a body without a soul. The war took our loved ones, our homes, and our hope. We’ve learned to live numb. We’ve witnessed so much death and destruction that it has become part of our daily life.

HEADLINES ABOUT ISRAEL:

(Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel accurately. IAK passes along only factual reporting.)

US military planning for divided Gaza with ‘green zone’ secured by international and Israeli troops

The US is planning for the long-term division of Gaza into a “green zone” under Israeli and international military control, where reconstruction would start, and a “red zone” to be left in ruins.

Plans for Gaza’s future have been shifting at a dizzying rate, reflecting a chaotic, improvised approach to resolving one of the world’s most complex and intractable conflicts and providing aid including food and shelter to 2 million Palestinians.

Without a workable plan for an international peacekeeping force, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, and large-scale rebuilding, Gaza risks slipping into limbo after two years of devastating war (continue reading here).

Rashida Tlaib, 20 other US lawmakers introduce resolution calling for recognition of Gaza genocide

US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib led Congress members in introducing a resolution that “officially recognizes that the Israeli government has committed the crime of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza” and urges Washington to take action to “prevent and punish genocide,” including halting weapons transfers and supporting international accountability processes.

“The Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza has not ended, and it will not end until we act,” Tlaib said in the statement, accusing the US government of providing “a blank check for war crimes and ethnic cleansing.”

The measure is backed by Representatives Becca Balint, Andre Carson, Greg Casar, Maxine Dexter, Maxwell Alejandro Frost, Jesus G. “Chuy” Garcia, Al Green, Pramila Jayapal, Hank Johnson, Ro Khanna, Summer Lee, Jim McGovern, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Delia Ramirez, Jan Schakowsky, Melanie Stansbury, Jill Tokuda, and Bonnie Watson Coleman (continue reading here).

Rashida Tlaib, speaking before the House on June 27: "It’s disgusting that my colleagues would support legislation to prohibit U.S. officials from even citing the Palestinian death toll. They want to erase the Palestinians who are living, and now they are trying to erase the Palestinians who are dead. This is genocide denial."
