Hunger in Gaza Can’t Be Explained Away by Preexisting Conditions

For those living with chronic illness or disability in Gaza, hunger is not separate from their condition — it is made worse by it. Medications have disappeared. Treatments have stopped. And basic survival has become a daily battle. Under total blockade, diabetes or a thyroid condition can become a death sentence.

The Intercept spoke to nine Palestinians with chronic illnesses or disabilities across Gaza, including two children, many of whom agreed to be interviewed on the condition that only their first name be published. Their experiences reveal that illness and starvation are deeply interconnected. Rather than explaining the other away, they intensify each other.

Deya’a has Type 1 diabetes; Sabri and Nazmiya have Type 2 diabetes; Bushra has thyroid disease; Rania has eczema; Hiba has atrial fibrillation. Read about their struggles here.

The mathematics of starvation: how Israel caused a famine in Gaza

The mathematics of famine are simple in Gaza. Palestinians cannot leave, war has ended farming and Israel has banned fishing, so practically every calorie its population eats must be brought in from outside.

Israel knows how much food is needed. It has been calibrating hunger in Gaza for decades, initially calculating shipments to exert pressure while avoiding starvation.

“The idea is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger,” a senior adviser to the then prime minister, Ehud Olmert, said in 2006. An Israeli court ordered the release of documents showing the details of those macabre sums two years later (continue reading here).

What ‘starvation’ really means, for the human body and for Gaza

Dr James Smith, an emergency doctor who has volunteered twice in Gaza, said, “It’s one of the most undignified and barbaric ways to kill. Starvation is always something that is done by one person to another. It’s intended to be protracted and to maximize suffering.”

He continued, “With starvation, the body loses the ability to launch an immune response to diseases or injuries it could normally deal with, such as gastroenteritis, trauma or a respiratory infection, so it’s often malnutrition plus an infection that kills.”

Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah, a Palestinian British surgeon who spent 43 days working in Gaza, said, “There are currently thousands of orphans roaming Gaza. There is no one to feed them or risk their lives to get food for them, so they’re more likely to die,” he said (continue reading here).

Unpacking the numbers behind Gaza’s wounded

The number of wounded during Israel’s war on Gaza has today reached at least 150,027. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry:

  • At least 18,500 of those wounded will require long-term rehabilitation
  • At least 4,700 have had one or more limbs amputated as a result of their injuries, of which at least 1,000 are children

Three die from Guillain-Barre Syndrome in Gaza

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza has confirmed three deaths from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare nerve condition that can cause sudden muscle weakness or paralysis. Two of the victims were children under the age of 15, who died after life-saving treatment became unavailable due to the ongoing blockade.

In a statement, Gaza health officials said the collapse of Gaza’s health and environmental systems poses a grave threat to Palestinians. “These are not just deaths… They are a warning of a real, potential infectious disaster.”

Reports: Netanyahu orders Israeli army to conquer all of Gaza

The Israeli war cabinet met on Monday to decide on the next phase of Israel’s war on Gaza. The meeting was reportedly to choose between ending the war in favor of ceasefire talks or expanding it to reoccupy the entire Strip.

According to initial unconfirmed reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has briefed “friendly journalists” that he has ordered the Israeli army to “conquer Gaza” in the face of opposition from the army’s Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir. Netanyahu’s office reportedly told N12: “The decision has been made — Israel is going to conquer the Gaza Strip.”

The ceasefire was supported by Israeli army officials, while the decision to reoccupy Gaza is favored by the hardline ministers like National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who are key allies in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s rightwing coalition and are credited with playing an influential role in sustaining the ongoing Israeli onslaught.

US President Donald Trump had given Netanyahu a “green light” to proceed with the expanded assault, according to the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth.

Retired security officials warn Israel on ‘precipice of defeat,’ demand ‘end to Gaza war’

Over a dozen former Israeli security officials issued a joint video statement on 3 August demanding an end to the war in Gaza and warning that Tel Aviv is on the brink of “defeat.”

Former officials have also demanded that US President Donald Trump pressure Israel to end the genocidal campaign which has raged since October 2023 – in a separate letter accompanying the video and signed by 550 former security officials.

The video statement was made by 19 retired army chiefs, intelligence heads, Shin Bet and Mossad directors, and police commissioners (continue reading here).

Colonizers cut, uprooted or poisoned 2,844 trees, the majority in Bethlehem. 232 additional incidents of vandalism and theft targeted Palestinian farms and private lands (continue reading here).

Speaker Mike Johnson visits occupied West Bank to support [illegal] Israeli settlers

Mike Johnson became the highest ranked US official to visit the occupied West Bank on Monday, the Republican House speaker drawing measures of praise and condemnation for his trip in support of Israeli settlements amid a worsening starvation crisis in Gaza.

Common Dreams quoted Johnson as saying that “the mountains of Judea and Samaria are the rightful property of the Jewish people*” and that the territory was at “the front line of the state of Israel, and must remain an integral part of it”.

“Even if the world thinks otherwise, we stand with you,” he reportedly added, an apparent reference to recent proclamations by France and the UK that they would recognize a Palestinian state if Israel did not commit to a ceasefire in Gaza (continue reading here).

*NOTE: Israel has illegally built around 280 settlements on Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, which are home to more than 700,000 illegal settlers. Some settler groups have a history of violence against Palestinians, often with the assistance of Israeli military forces.

US reverses pledge to link disaster funds to Israel boycott stance

The Trump administration on Monday reversed course on requiring U.S. cities and states to rebuke boycotts of Israeli companies in order to receive disaster funds, according to a statement, and deleted the earlier policy from its website.
