Children so malnourished they’re losing their sight – War on Gaza Day 582

Compilation of news reports – IAK staff

NOTE: The Gaza Health Ministry’s daily casualty figures are based on the number of dead and wounded Palestinians brought to hospitals, and does not include victims that are under the rubble or elsewhere, where ambulance and civil defense crews can not reach them.

A ministry statement said that 23 people were killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza in the last 24 hours, while 124 others were injured.

Among the dead were all 5 members of the Talib family – 3 of whom were children – in the Sabra neighborhood, south of Gaza City, killed in their tent by an Israeli airstrike.

Children so malnourished they’re losing their sight: Inside Israel’s aid blockade on Gaza

The skin is drawn so tightly over the tiny bodies of the emaciated babies in Gaza that they appear both hauntingly newborn and old at the same time.

Doctors treating the daily influx of malnourished children – starving under Israel’s total blockade on aid – say some are so undernourished that they have started to lose their sight.

“The majority of cases are between one month and two years old,” says Dr Raed Al-Baba, a gastroenterologist and nutritionist at Al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza. He helps treat around 100 children brought in daily, mostly because of hunger.

“Many children are stunted, suffering from severe diarrhea and anaemia … It’s leading to rickets, bowed knees, and even the inability to move. They can’t see things well or clear as a result of malnutrition,” he adds.

“I hope our voices will reach the world … because our children bear no guilt in this war” (continue reading here).

Israel Kills Cancer Patients Through Deliberate Delay, Committing an Act of Genocide

In a report released today, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights [PCHR] warns of the Israeli occupying forces’ persistent denial of cancer patients’ rights to treatment both within and outside the Gaza Strip. By destroying the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, the specialized cancer treatment facility, last March, the IOF extinguished the hopes of over 12,500 cancer patients in Gaza for specialized medical care within the enclave.

Furthermore, by restricting their travel, Israel has denied 91% of these patients their right to seek treatment abroad, posing a grave threat that has already led to the deaths of hundreds of patients during the ongoing year and a half of genocide against the population of the Gaza Strip.

The PCHR’s report, titled “The Silent Death: Cancer Patients Left to Die Waiting: Victims of Genocide in the Gaza Strip,” sounds the alarm regarding the approximately 2,700 cancer patients in critical condition whose access to treatment outside the Strip is obstructed by the IOF. It also cautions against the continued denial of all cancer patients’ right to treatment and medication, where shortages now exceed 85% of approved treatment protocols.

This constitutes the subjection of these patients, along with the rest of the defenseless civilian population, to living conditions that lead to physical destruction and inflict severe physical and psychological harm (continue reading here).

Explosive Materials Bound for Israel Are Flying Out of JFK Airport

Americans know that the U.S. government and defense industry exports huge amounts of military goods to Israel — but they may not be aware that in some cases these shipments travel beside them.

On Saturday afternoon, a cargo airplane carrying 14 tons of explosive materials bound for an Israeli weapons manufacturing company is expected to fly out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on Saturday afternoon, according to air cargo documents reviewed by The Intercept.

The explosive material, grade A nitrocellulose, is a widely used industrial material that plays a key role in making ammunition — from sniper bullets to rockets. According to the air cargo documents obtained by journalists at Irish news site The Ditch and researchers with the Palestinian Youth Movement, 51 pallets of nitrocellulose are expected to be delivered to the Israeli weapons manufacturing company IMI Systems, headquartered outside of Tel Aviv in the city of Ramat Hasharon. The main client of IMI Systems, previously known as Israeli Military Industries, is the Israel Defense Forces.

The cargo flight by Challenge Airlines Israel was scheduled to depart from JFK at 2 p.m. on Saturday and land in Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv on Sunday, according to flight information. The manufacturer of the materials is not known, but the cargo’s sender is listed as deriving from a Los Angeles ZIP code. While other weapons-related shipments have been sent from JFK to Israel, Saturday’s cargo flight is the first confirmed shipment of nitrocellulose and the largest single shipment of explosives to pass through New York City’s busiest airport, said journalist and lawyer Roman Shortall, co-founder of The Ditch (continue reading here).

UK Lawyers for Israel condemned over claim war may reduce obesity in Gaza

A UK-based advocacy group for Israel has been criticized for suggesting a reduction in obesity resulting from the war in Gaza may increase life expectancy there.

The comments by UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI), which came amid warnings of impending famine in Gaza, were condemned as “sickening” by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC).

UKLFI’s patrons include David Pannick KC, who has represented Boris Johnson and the late queen.

The remarks were made by Jonathan Turner, the chief executive of UKLFI, in response to a motion due to be debated at the Co-operative Group’s annual general meeting calling for the retailer to stop selling Israeli produce.

Urging the Co-operative council to withdraw the motion, Turner criticised the fact that it refers to an estimated death toll of 186,000. In a letter to the Co-operative Group secretary, Turner wrote that it was “totally false and misleading” to cite the figure from a letter published by the Lancet last year, which was a projected figure including indirect casualties.

He adds: “The [Lancet] letter also ignored factors that may increase average life expectancy in Gaza, bearing in mind that one of the biggest health issues in Gaza prior to the current war was obesity” (continue reading here).
