Another baby dies of cold in Gaza, as Rafah crossing remains locked down – Not a ceasefire Day 103

Compilation of news reports – IAK staff

(While a “ceasefire” is ostensibly in place, Israel has continued its assault on Gaza without interruption. If Americans Knew considers the war to be ongoing, and in its 828th day.)

At least one Palestinian was killed in Gaza on Tuesday, and a baby died from the cold, in Israel’s latest ceasefire violations.

Since the “ceasefire” began on October 11, Israel has killed at least 466 Palestinians. At least 1,294 have been injured. Death toll figures are tentative.

At least 25 Palestinians in Gaza have died due to the extreme cold, including 21 children, since the start of Israel’s genocidal war in October 2023. At least 9 Palestinian children have died of extreme cold this winter.

Israel has so far violated the 11 October ceasefire deal in Gaza at least 1,244 times (as of Jan. 15, 2026). More statistics below.

A Palestinian infant died Tuesday from severe cold in the Gaza Strip, raising to nine the number of children who have lost their lives to cold-related causes since the start of the current winter season, a medical source said.

The infant, seven-month-old Shatha Abu Jarad from Gaza City’s al-Daraj neighborhood, died after her heart suddenly stopped as a result of extreme cold, the source told Anadolu.

*NOTE: A number of infants died of hypothermia in the winter of 2023-2024 and 2024-2025, for the same reason it is happening this winter: Israel’s refusal to provide shelter – a responsibility under international law

Rafah crossing* remains closed: no entry for aid or Gaza administration committee

Israel has decided to keep the Rafah crossing closed and to prevent the Gaza administration committee from entering the territory, despite US demands. This comes amid disagreements with Washington over the make-up of the executive council and the role of Qatar and Turkey. No date has been set for the committee to start work because of direct Israeli obstacles.

*NOTE: After imposing severe restrictions on aid to Gaza for months and causing widespread hunger and hundreds of deaths due to starvation, the ceasefire terms required Israel to surge massive quantities of aid into Gaza (600 trucks a day – actually a modest amount given the circumstances). More than 100 days into the ceasefire, this critical crossing is still closed, and the entry of aid is well below the amount agreed upon. Israel’s refusal to open the Rafah crossing now in retaliation for Washington’s Board of Peace appointments is just another of Netanyahu’s many delay tactics to prolong the genocide.

According to Doctors Without Borders, over 18,000 Gazans are in need of medical evacuation – over 1,000 have died already due to the crossing closure.

In fact, Israel has violated most or all of the terms of the ceasefire: All military operations were supposed to be suspended, but Israel has continued them, killing 466 Palestinians since the ceasefire began; rehabilitation of infrastructure, hospitals, and bakeries was supposed to begin, and Israel was supposed to allow entry of necessary equipment to remove rubble and open roads – none of these commitments have been fulfilled.

GAZA “BOARD OF PEACE” NEWS & HEADLINES:

The so-called “Board of Peace” for Gaza is stacked with wealthy and powerful Israel supporters. Political strategist Ashish Prashar said, “It appears the only qualification for joining the Gaza ‘peace board’ is to have a strong track record of endorsing (and arming) Israel’s project of genocide, apartheid and ethnic cleansing, and criminalizing those who oppose it.”

Among the world leaders invited to be on the Board of Peace is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an indicted war criminal– but zero Palestinians. (Read more here.)

Sources: Trump to lead Gaza peace board post-presidency, may supplant UN

President Donald J. Trump disclosed Tuesday that the Board of Peace, which he is forming to manage Gaza, may ultimately supplant the United Nations.

“Possibly,” Trump responded when questioned about this objective, elaborating, “The UN just hasn’t been very helpful. I’m a big fan of the UN’s potential, but it has never lived up to its potential,” he continued.

Israel Hayom has learned that Trump and his team plan for him to personally continue chairing the Board of Peace after completing his US presidential term in three years. Security Council Resolution 2803, which ratified the 20-point Gaza framework, explicitly identifies Trump by name as the Board of Peace leader.

‘Board of Peace’: Trump is running Gaza, and the world, like a mafia boss

To invite the same cast of characters who denied a genocide was and is taking place in Gaza, who intimidated and imprisoned college students who protested in support of Palestine, who are profoundly ignorant about the Middle East – and expect them to end the conflict – is more than just insane. It’s criminal.

New B’Tselem report: Living Hell: the Israeli prison system as a network of torture camps

In a new report that follows up on the August 2024 report Welcome to Hell, B’Tselem made use of the testimonies of 21 Palestinians released from Israeli prisons in recent months and on the work of Israeli and international human rights organizations that monitor prisons.

Several of the interviewees described undergoing or witnessing sexual violence in custody; others highlighted brutality during interrogations – confirming the pattern of abuse already presented in B’Tselem’s August 2024 report (continue reading the summary here; find the full report here).

In break with status quo*, police let Jewish visitors take printed prayers onto Temple Mount

Israeli police confirm change to longstanding ban on non-Muslim prayer, which comes weeks after Ben Gvir confidant appointed as Jerusalem’s top officer; Jewish activists laud policy.

*NOTE: Anyone can visit the Al Aqsa Mosque grounds, but only Muslims are allowed to pray there, according to an understanding known as the ‘status quo agreement,’ under which for decades, Israel has formally pledged to allow Muslims to pray at the site, while Jews pray at the Western Wall below. The agreement has been in place since Israel captured the Old City of Jerusalem from Jordan in 1967.

In practice, however, restrictions have steadily eroded. Since 2023, Israeli police have increasingly allowed Jewish visitors to pray inside the compound. Authorities have also permitted audible group prayer, singing and, in 2024, public Torah lessons, particularly on the eastern side of the compound.
