Israeli airstrikes on Saturday killed at least 55 Palestinians and injured 170 in four “massacres” on Saturday.

Among the dead are 4 whose tent was struck in Deir al Balah – one was a child; at least 10 who were gathered to receive aid in Deir al Balah, including the city’s mayor, Diab al-Jaro, who Israel claims was a Hamas operative; at least 7 who were sheltering at the al-Majida Wasila School, west of Gaza City – including a two-day-old infant named Janan al-Ghurra and her mother.

The Israeli military claimed that its strike against in a building formerly used as a school in the Gaza City area, targeted a group of terrorists.

NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance.

Israeli attack kills 195th journalist in Gaza

The number of journalists killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023 has soared to 195, a local organization said on Saturday.

“The number of journalist martyrs has risen to 195 following the martyrdom of journalist Mohammad Baalousha, a correspondent for Al-Mashhad Channel (a private Lebanese network based in Dubai), as a result of an Israeli airstrike on Gaza,” the Palestinian Journalists’ Forum said in a statement.

The NGO condemned “the international silence and failure to protect Palestinian journalists and ensure their ability to perform their professional duties in accordance with international laws and humanitarian conventions.”

In January, Baalousha was injured by an Israeli sniper while reporting and was denied medical treatment for six hours, as Israeli tanks blocked his evacuation.

Israel’s bombing of municipality, school in Gaza ‘violation of international laws’: Palestinian National Council

The Palestinian National Council (PNC) on Saturday described the Israeli bombing of the Deir Al-Balah municipality building in central Gaza and a school sheltering displaced people as a “blatant violation of all international laws and norms and a deliberate targeting of defenseless civilians.”

“What is happening in Gaza is a major humanitarian crime that reflects the brutality of the occupation and the world’s silence over the suffering of an oppressed and besieged people,” the Council (Palestine Liberation Organization Parliament) said in a statement.

The PNC noted that the bombing of the Deir Al-Balah municipality building and al-Majda Waseela Secondary School, where displaced people had sought refuge, was “a direct targeting of defenseless civilians, most of whom are women and children.”

West Bank: Palestinian Authority kills Jenin Brigades commander in raid coordination with Israeli army

Palestinian Authority (PA) troops launched a deadly operation in the occupied West Bank’s Jenin refugee camp during the early hours of 14 December, killing Yazid Ja’ayseh, a commander in the Jenin Brigades, the local branch of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s (PIJ) Quds Brigades.

PA Security Forces spokesman Brigadier General Anwar Rajab said the operation, launched in close coordination with the Israeli army, aims to “preserve security and civil peace, establishing the rule of law, and ending strife and chaos.”

Rajab added that the goal of Ramallah and Tel Aviv is “reclaiming Jenin camp from the control of outlaws who have made life miserable for citizens and deprived them of their right to receive public services freely and safely.”

During Saturday’s raids, PA bullets also killed Palestinian child Mohammad al-Amer.

“The targeting of resistance groups by the authorities in Jenin aligns entirely with the aggression and criminality of the [Israeli] occupation,” the PIJ said in a statement.

The Palestinian Authority is widely seen as a collaborator with, or subcontractor for the Israeli occupation.

Israeli drone strikes car in southern Lebanon in new ceasefire violation

An Israeli drone targeted a vehicle on the road to the Khardali area in southern Lebanon, according to Al Jazeera Arabic.

The attack marked a fresh violation of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

The Israeli military said the air force had struck launchers that were ready to fire at Israel in a Lebanese violation of the understandings reached last month.

University of Rochester students face 7 years in jail for displaying ‘Wanted’ posters on campus

Last month four students at the University of Rochester were charged with second-degree criminal mischief for their connection to “Wanted” posters that were put up around campus.

The posters accused a small number of faculty members of enabling genocide and supporting the displacement of Palestinians in Gaza. Not all the faculty members identified are Jewish, but the university immediately sent out emails tagging the action as antisemitic.

Pro-Israel campus groups condemned the posters, including the school’s Hillel chapter which claimed they “disproportionately singled out Jewish faculty and staff and used language that spreads harmful, antisemitic ideas about Jewish people.”

The charges do not mention the content of the posters. The students were arrested for alleged damage to campus walls, but if convicted they could face up to seven years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) is circulating a petition calling for the charges to be dropped.

“Repression of those fighting for Palestinian liberation is only increasing, and students are among the most vulnerable members of our movement,” it reads. “That’s why it’s critical that we act to protect these students, and refuse a precedent that mischaracterizes our movement, represses free speech, and shuts down demands for divestment from Israeli genocide” (continue reading here).

STATISTICS OCTOBER 7, 2023 – DECEMBER 14, 2024:

Palestinian death toll from October 7, 2023 – December 14, 2024: at least 45,743* – 44,976 in Gaza; in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers and/or settlers have killed at least 813 Palestinians (~169 of them children).

Thousands of those killed in Gaza have yet to be identified, and an estimated 11,000 more are still buried under rubble.

According to a report in the Lancet, by multiplying the reported deaths by five, it is possible to reach a conservative estimate of total deaths (including indirect causes like starvation and lack of medicine). Using the latest figure from AFP (44,976), it is reasonable to estimate at least 224,880 total deaths in Gaza since October 7th, 2023.

According to a recent report by the UN Human Rights Office of identified fatalities in Gaza, about 44% were children. It is reasonable to estimate that 19,789 of known direct deaths and 98,947 of the total deaths are children.

Since Israel launched an extermination campaign in northern Gaza in early October, over 4,000 Palestinians have been killed or are missing and another 12,000 wounded.

[*The Ministry’s figures have been contested by the Israeli authorities, although they have been accepted as accurate by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and WHO. These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.]

Since October 7th, 2023:

  • At least 49 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (at least 30 from Gaza).
  • At least 43 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition (at least 37 of them children)**.
  • About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
  • About 345,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

Palestinian injuries from October 7, 2023 – December 14, 2024: at least 113,209 (including at least 106,759 in Gaza and 6,450 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how many Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]

Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – December 14, 2024: ~1,593 (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 415*** military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza (updated: Dec 11); 39 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.

The death toll in Lebanon since October 8, 2023 is at least 4,047, of which 3,961 were killed in the final months before the ceasefire; most of the 16,638 injuries also occurred toward the end of the war.

NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.

*Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.

**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.

***The figure does not include the reportedly 59 Israeli soldiers – nearly 17% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.

† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.
