Over 4,000 Malnourished Children Treated Each Month in Gaza – UN

The number of children admitted for treatment due to malnutrition in Gaza has increased to 4,000 per month since July, according to the United Nations.

“OCHA reports that severe access challenges continue to prevent partners from being able to screen regularly enough to detect malnutrition cases that require treatment,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a press briefing on Tuesday, citing the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“So far in the fourth quarter of 2024, they have completed just over 151,000 such screenings – out of 346,000 children under five in Gaza,” he added.

Since July, the number of children admitted for treatment has increased to more than 4,000 per month, according to the OCHA.

Israel Targets Humanitarian Teams in Gaza

Several Palestinians were killed and injured in two separate raids by the Israeli occupation army targeting aid workers in Rafah and Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

At least seven Palestinians were killed and others were wounded due to Israeli shelling near the Al-Akhawakh area on Al-Rashid Street, west of Rafah.

According to Palestinian media, another attack targeted a group securing aid at the Al-Nas roundabout, west of the Mawasi area in Khan Yunis, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.

The Israeli army reportedly struck aid security personnel in Rafah and Khan Yunis while they facilitated the entry and movement of humanitarian aid trucks via the Karam Abu Salem crossing, a critical entry point for supplies into Gaza.

Although this crossing is essential for delivering aid amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis, it has been frequently closed by Israeli authorities.

The targeted personnel were working to ensure the safe passage of trucks carrying food and other vital supplies to international humanitarian organizations.

Israel issues evacuation orders for civilians in central Gaza camp ahead of attacks

The Israeli army ordered residents of the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza on Wednesday to immediately leave their homes ahead of attacks in the area, due to four rockets allegedly being fired from the area towards Israeli settlements.

Military spokesman Avichay Adraee said residents must head to what he called a “humanitarian zone” in central Gaza, alleging that rockets were fired from the area.

Claims of Hamas fighters in Gaza hospitals may have been exaggerated, says senior ICC prosecutor

Claims about the presence of Hamas fighters in hospitals in Gaza under siege by Israel’s military have been “grossly exaggerated”, a top prosecutor at the international criminal court (ICC) has said.

Andrew Cayley, who is leading the ICC’s Palestine investigation, questioned the reliability of claims about military activity in Gaza’s hospitals which have been made to justify Israeli attacks on healthcare facilities in the territory.

ICC prosectors are understood to have reviewed incidents in which hospitals have been damaged or destroyed in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has repeatedly justified operations against medical facilities in Gaza with claims that they were being used by Hamas militants.

Cayley said the ICC faced “great difficulty assessing” the level of Hamas militant presence in hospitals “because clearly there are lies being spoken, but that is really something we do need to get to the bottom of as a prosecution office”.

He added: “I think that has been grossly exaggerated, but we need to be able to demonstrate very clearly what the level of military presence was, if at all, in these hospitals because I think we’ve been misled about that in the press” (continue reading here).

Another Palestinian journalist killed in Israeli attack in Gaza as death toll rises to 193

Another Palestinian journalist was killed in an Israeli attack in the Gaza Strip, taking the overall death toll since last year to 193, a local organization said on Wednesday.

The Palestinian Journalists’ Forum identified the new victim as Eman Shanti, a broadcaster for the local Al-Aqsa Radio, after an Israeli strike on her family’s home in Gaza City.

The forum condemned “international silence and the failure to protect Palestinian journalists to allow them to carry out their professional duties in accordance with international laws and humanitarian conventions.”

200 fishermen killed in Gaza, fishing sector suffers $20m loss

The Israeli occupation army has killed 200 fishermen during the ongoing campaign of mass extermination in Gaza, the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture in the besieged enclave said in a statement yesterday.

The ministry revealed that the Israeli war on Gaza has resulted in the loss of approximately 4,600 tonnes of fish production, valued at $20,129,000.

Additionally, the war has forced nearly 4,000 fishermen out of employment.

Prior to the genocide, the Palestinian Fishermen’s Association in Gaza estimated that there were some 4,000 fishermen working in Gaza’s fishing sector, who are looking after about 50,000 dependents.

Australia backs UN motion for ‘immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire’ in Gaza

Australia has voted with more than 150 countries at the United Nations to demand that Israel reverse its ban on the Palestinian aid agency UNRWA and to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, in a move which could further increase tensions with Israel.

At a UN emergency special session on Thursday, Australia voted with the vast majority of world nations to support the two resolutions, splitting from the US and Israel who voted against them.

The motion for a permanent and unconditional ceasefire, the release of hostages, the delivery of humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians passed with 158 members voting in support and nine against, and 13 abstaining.

A separate motion in support of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), calling for the Israeli Knesset to reverse laws banning the agency from operating in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, passed with 159 in support, nine against and 11 abstaining (continue reading here).

STATISTICS OCTOBER 7, 2023 – DECEMBER 11, 2024:

Palestinian death toll from October 7, 2023 – December 11, 2024: at least 45,645* – 44,835 in Gaza; in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers and/or settlers have killed at least 810 Palestinians (~169 of them children).

Thousands of those killed in Gaza have yet to be identified, and an estimated 11,000 more are still buried under rubble.

According to a report in the Lancet, by multiplying the reported deaths by five, it is possible to reach a conservative estimate of total deaths (including indirect causes like starvation and lack of medicine). Using the latest figure from AFP (44,835), it is reasonable to estimate at least 224,175 total deaths in Gaza since October 7th, 2023.

According to a recent report by the UN Human Rights Office of identified fatalities in Gaza, about 44% were children. It is reasonable to estimate that 19,727 of known direct deaths and 98,637 of the total deaths are children.

[*The Ministry’s figures have been contested by the Israeli authorities, although they have been accepted as accurate by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and WHO. These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.]

Since October 7th, 2023:

  • At least 49 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (at least 30 from Gaza).
  • At least 43 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition (at least 37 of them children)**.
  • About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
  • About 345,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

Palestinian injuries from October 7, 2023 – December 11, 2024: at least 112,584 (including at least 106,356 in Gaza and 6,450 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how many Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]

Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – December 11, 2024: ~1,592 (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 414*** military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza (updated: Dec 9); 39 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.

The death toll in Lebanon since October 8, 2023 is at least 4,047, of which 3,961 were killed in the final months before the ceasefire; most of the 16,638 injuries also occurred toward the end of the war.

NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.

*Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.

**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.

***The figure does not include the reportedly 56 Israeli soldiers – nearly 16% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.

† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.
