Israel forced displacement of over quarter-million Palestinians from Gaza City, says government media office

Israel has forcibly displaced 270,000 Palestinians from Gaza City toward the south under threat of bombardment and genocide, the Gaza Government Media Office said Saturday.

In a statement, the office said more than 900,000 Palestinians remain in Gaza City and northern areas, refusing to leave despite the ongoing destruction and “crimes of permanent forced displacement.”

“While thousands have fled south due to heavy Israeli airstrikes, at least 22,000 have since returned to Gaza City after moving belongings to the south,” it said, citing the absence of basic necessities there.

Israel Gives Evacuation Orders Before a Bombing. Many Gazan Families Can’t Afford to Leave.

In Gaza, new beginnings never come without a price. A rough breakdown of minimal expenses for a family relocating from northern Gaza to the south illustrates real the scale of the challenge.

Transportation costs come to around 6,000 – 8,000 shekels — about $1,800 – 2,400 in U.S. dollars for a roughly 15-mile drive. A basic tent will cost 3,500 shekels [if one can find a tent – there are few for sale]. Food to survive the first few days will be 500 shekels or more. Renting an empty plot of land with no facilities will amount to 500 shekels [again, if such a thing is available – nearly every square inch of the southern region of Gaza is already crowded]. There are other expenses.

Altogether, even the lowest estimate comes to a total of at least 10,000 shekels — approximately $3,000 — just to cover the initial phase of displacement. With Gaza’s economy destroyed by Israel’s relentless genocide, leaving most people with little to no income, these costs are out of reach for many Palestinians (continue reading here).

Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory: With UN deadline expired, all states must act

On Thursday, a deadline set by the UN General Assembly for Israel to terminate its occupation of the Palestinian Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, expired. It was set a year earlier, after the landmark 2024 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which affirmed a profound shift in approach to the question of the legality of the occupation.

The court ruled that the Israeli occupation is illegal not only in its conduct, but also in its very existence. It violates both the legal right of self-determination of the Palestinian people, and the legal prohibition on the acquisition of territory by force, and must end as rapidly as possible. The UN General Assembly endorsed the ruling, giving Israel a year to comply with the duty to withdraw.

But as that deadline expires, the occupation is even more entrenched and abusive, amid a genocide in Gaza, expansions in settlements and settler violence in the West Bank, and Israeli plans to declare the annexation of more territory beyond East Jerusalem (continue reading here).

Arab Lawyers Representative Calls for UN Protection of Gaza-Bound Flotilla

Abdelhaq Benkadi, representative of the Arab Lawyers Union aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, stressed that the international community has a responsibility to ensure the safety of the fleet, which is carrying out a strictly humanitarian mission.

Speaking to the Lebanese newspaper Al Mayadeen, Benkadi noted that although the international community had previously agreed to open humanitarian crossings into Gaza, “it has yet to implement that decision.”

He placed direct responsibility on the United Nations for any threats or violations the convoy may face (continue reading here).

Bill to Block Arms Sales to Israel Endorsed by Congressional Progressive Caucus

The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), one of the largest caucuses in Congress, has voted to endorse blocking weapon sales to Israel.

Representing nearly 100 members of Congress, the CPC endorsement of the Block the Bombs Act, which would prohibit the transfer of weapons to Israel until it stops committing human rights violations, is a major boost to efforts to hold the Israeli government accountable for its genocide in Gaza.

“The United States cannot continue to send bombs we know will be used to commit terrible atrocities in Gaza,” CPC chair Rep. Greg Casar said in a statement (continue reading here).
