At least 29 killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza school, home

Al Jazeera reports:

At least 18 people, including two children and a woman, have been killed in an Israeli air attack on a school-turned-shelter in Gaza’s Nuseirat camp, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense agency and hospital officials.

Six members of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) were among those killed, marking the highest death toll among its staff in a single incident, the agency announced on X. Among the victims were the manager of a UNRWA shelter and team members assisting displaced people.

Witnesses told Al Jazeera that people were waiting for food when Israeli jets struck the United Nations-run al-Jaouni school in Nuseirat camp in central Gaza on Wednesday.

The Israeli army said, without providing evidence, that the compound was used to plan and carry out attacks against Israeli forces in Gaza and against Israel.

“What’s happening in Gaza is totally unacceptable,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Nearly 300 humanitarian aid workers, more than two-thirds of them UN staff, have also been killed during the conflict, according to the UN. Guterres said there should be an effective investigation and accountability for their deaths.

“We have courts but we see that the decisions of courts are not respected, and it is this kind of limbo of accountability that is totally unacceptable and that requires also a serious reflection.”

Earlier on Wednesday, an Israeli attack hit a home near the southern city of Khan Younis, killing 11 people, including six brothers and sisters from the same family who ranged in age from 21 months to 21 years old, according to the European Hospital, which received the casualties.

Israeli jets also struck a group of people waiting to buy bread outside a bakery west of Gaza City, according to the Civil Defense.

AL JAZEERA’S HANI MAHMOUD ADDS FROM INSIDE GAZA: Judging from the systematic patterns of attacks on families, it seems to be something that will cause a change in the demography of the Gaza Strip.

Within the past few hours, another air strike targeted a home in the western part of Rafah city. The initial reports we received from people close to the area that the house was full of people, including a whole displaced family that was sheltering inside the house.

These examples keep repeating over and over, but in the past couple of months these attacks are happening without any prior warning whatsoever, which means people are … being attacked without being given the opportunity to seek shelter elsewhere for safety.

At least 8 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli bombing Wednesday of a UN-run school housing displaced civilians in the central Gaza Strip, with several injured, according to Gaza’s Media Office.

Israel bombs designated safe zone after defense minister declares Hamas eradicated

Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azoum reports:

It was a massive strike that hit a very densely populated area of the Nuseirat refugee camp that the Israeli army has designated as “a safe zone”.

The grim reality is that the Israeli army is bombing the UN-run shelters under the pretext of them being used as control and command centers by the Palestinian armed groups.

Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant just two days ago said that Hamas as a military formation does not exist any more as the Israeli forces managed to eradicate the vast majority of its military capabilities.

Now, the question is, if these capabilities have been diminished in a considerable manner, who is Israel attacking at the moment?

NOTE: Arrest warrants are being sought for Yoav Gallant and Prime Minister Netanyahu in the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

“Until our last breath”: Journalist Anas al-Sharif on Documenting Israel’s Genocide in Gaza Every Day for 11 Straight Months

Drop Site News reports:

Anas al-Sharif has become one of the most recognizable faces on television in the Arab world. For the past 11 months, the 27-year-old Al Jazeera correspondent has been reporting from the front lines of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza—now the deadliest place for journalists in modern history.

By some counts, over 160 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October—a rate of one journalist killed every other day for nearly a year. Al-Sharif has personally endured threats against his life, and his home was targeted in an Israeli attack, killing his father.

Al-Sharif is one of the few reporters who have remained in northern Gaza since October 7—an area from which, just a few days into the war, the Israeli government ordered 1.1 million people to evacuate and which has been the most heavily bombarded by Israel.

One journalist told Drop Site News that there are only around 30 working journalists left in northern Gaza today.

Al-Sharif has been a near constant presence on television and online, reporting almost every day on airstrikes, shelling, massacres, displacement, famine, death, and dismemberment—and, whenever he can, on glimpses of hope and Palestinian resilience.

Press freedom group demands ‘immediate entrance’ to Gaza

Tweet from the Foreign Press Association:

The Foreign Press Association has denounced Israel’s refusal to allow international journalists into the Gaza Strip and filed a new petition at the Israeli Supreme Court asking for immediate access to the Palestinian enclave.

The FPA, which represents international media groups, said Israel’s behavior is “shocking” for a country “that professes its commitment to the democratic ideals of a free press”.

“Never before has Israel enforced such a long and strict information blackout,” the FPA said.

The group said it was turning to the Israeli Supreme Court – which upheld the entry ban on security grounds in January – “in hopes to sustain the freedom of the press and democratic fundamental rights”.

It added, “To Israel, we say enough with the excuses. It is time to let us in.”

WHO evacuates nearly 100 wounded, sick Palestinians out of Gaza, 12,000 more to go

Al Jazeera reports:

The World Health Organization (WHO) removed 97 sick and severely injured patients and 155 health professionals from Gaza in what its chief says is the largest medical evacuation since October 2023.

Patients were transported via the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing to Ramon airport in Israel for onward travel to Abu Dhabi for specialised care, said WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus.

“Patients included 45 children and 52 adults with a wide range of diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, congenital anomalies, blood and liver diseases and trauma/injuries,” he said.

NOTE: The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that overall, only 124 patients and 137 accompaniers have been evacuated from Gaza on four separate occasions since 7 May, while an estimated 12,000 patients have been unable to leave and receive urgently needed medical care abroad since then.
About a quarter of the people wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza – at least 22,000 Palestinians – have injuries that are “life-changing”, according to the World Health Organization.

Gaza faces a massive reconstruction challenge. Here are key facts and figures

Reuters reports:

The United Nations has warned that removing 40 million tonnes of rubble left in the aftermath of Israel’s bombardment could take 15 years and cost between $500-600 million.

The debris is believed to be contaminated with asbestos and likely holds human remains. The Palestinian Health Ministry estimated in May that 10,000 bodies were missing under the rubble.

Rebuilding Gaza’s shattered homes will take at least until 2040, but could drag on for many decades, according to a UN report released in May.

Palestinian data shows that about 80,000 homes have been destroyed in the conflict.

The estimated damage to infrastructure totals $18.5 billion, affecting residential buildings, commerce, industry and essential services such as education, health and energy, a UN-World Bank report said.

Gaza City has lost nearly all its water production capacity, with 88 per cent of its water wells and 100 per cent of its desalination plants damaged or destroyed, Oxfam said in a recent report.

More than half of Gaza’s agricultural land, crucial for feeding the war-ravaged territory’s hungry population, has been degraded by conflict, satellite images analyzed by the United Nations show.

A report from the Gaza Government Media Office in August enumerated the damage to public facilities. The conflict led to the destruction of 200 government facilities, 122 schools and universities, 610 mosques and three churches.

West Bank: Israeli attacks kill 8 Palestinians in Tubas, Tulkarem

WAFA reports:

TUBAS: Five Palestinian citizens were killed at dawn on Wednesday in an airstrike carried out by Israeli occupation aircraft targeting a group of citizens near Al-Tawhid Mosque in the city of Tubas.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said that its crews were able to retrieve the bodies of five people from the bombing site, where they were transferred to the hospital, while the occupation forces prevented ambulances from reaching the targeted site.

The slain youths were idenfitied to be Mohammad Saeed Hussein Sawafta,19, Majd Burhan Jamil Sawafta, 23, Qais Saeb Rateb Sawafta, 24, Yassin Ahmed Ali Sawafta, 22, and Talaba Mahmoud Jamil Basharat,18.

This bombing comes as part of an escalation campaign launched by the occupation forces on the city of Tubas, which saw a large-scale storming of its outskirts and neighborhoods in the early hours of dawn, as the occupation forces declared a curfew on the city, and deployed in its northern areas.

The raid was accompanied by intensive flying of reconnaissance planes and helicopters at low altitudes over the governorate.

TULKAREM: Three Palestinians were killed, on Wednesday evening, in Israeli drone bombings that targeted a Palestinian vehicle in the Aktaba suburb, east of Tulkarm city.

Local and security sources said that the occupation drones bombed a vehicle in the Aktaba suburb, causing it to catch fire completely.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said that its crews transferred the bodies of three Palestinians who were killed in the drone attack.

The occupation forces have been launching a large-scale offensive on the West Bank, especially against the governorates of Tulkarem, Jenin and Tubas, which has so far resulted in the killing of 47 citizens, including 21 from Jenin, nine from Tulkarem, 13 from Tubas, three from Hebron and one from Nablus.

This raises the number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, since October 7, 2023, to 701, including 159 children, ten women, and nine elderly people.

West Bank experiences a week of Israeli military, settler violence

Weekly update (Sept. 3-9) from OCHA:

During the reporting period, Israeli forces killed 10 Palestinians, including three children. Israeli forces and settlers injured 59 Palestinians, including nine children. In addition, Israeli forces killed one female foreign national.

In Kafr Dan, Jenin refugee camp, and on the eastern side of Jenin, a violent Israeli operation resulted in 19 Palestinian fatalities, and the destruction of at least 45 residential buildings, displacing at least 74 households, comprising 297 people, including 102 children. At least 1,900 housing units have been damaged.

In Tulkarm and Nur Shams refugee camps, the Israeli operation led to seven Palestinian fatalities and caused damage to 400 housing units. 61 were rendered uninhabitable, displacing a total of 89 households, comprising 327 people, including 123 children.

During the Israeli forces’ wide-scale operation in the northern West Bank, access to hospitals and medical facilities was severely restricted. PRCS has expressed deep concern over the shrinking humanitarian space, particularly in Jenin and Jenin refugee camp.

According to PRCS, Israeli forces have directly targeted their ambulances, injuring two Emergency Medical Team (EMT) members and a volunteer doctor. These obstructions have hindered the delivery of essential supplies and medical services, worsening conditions for civilians. The PRCS urges the international community to ensure adherence to international humanitarian law and address the escalating humanitarian crisis.

During the reporting period, Israeli settlers perpetrated 43 attacks against Palestinians, resulting in one fatality and 10 injuries, and damage to property. Palestinians perpetrated two attacks against settlers in this period, resulting in one injury.

Between 7 October 2023 and 9 September 2024, at least 17 Palestinian households comprising at least 80 people, including 41 children, were displaced due to Israeli settler violence and harassment, and the takeover of Palestinian property. Since 7 October 2023, 276 Palestinians households comprising 1,627 people, including 794 children, have been displaced in the context of incidents related to Israeli settlers.

Israeli leaders warn Netanyahu that West Bank is on verge of explosion that would put Israelis at risk

Middle East Monitor reports:

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and the heads of the Israeli security services have warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the deteriorating situation in the West Bank, expressing their fears of an “imminent explosion” that could lead to hundreds of Israelis being killed, Channel 13 has reported.

The warning was made during the latest session of the political and security cabinet by Gallant; the head of the Shin Bet security service, Ronen Bar; and the IDF Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi.

According to the report, security officials confirmed that the number of weapons in the West Bank “is the largest in the history of the area,” as a result of “security breaches on the eastern border and theft of weapons” from Israeli army bases.

The security heads warned that the deterioration of the situation could lead to large-scale bombing operations that extend into Israel. They proposed several steps to calm the situation, including allowing Palestinian workers to work inside Israel.

It was also recommended to transfer withheld funds to the Palestinian Authority, which far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is blocking. Moreover, they said that the “status quo” at Al-Aqsa Mosque should be maintained, against the backdrop of Itamar Ben-Gvir’s provocations.

NOTE: While Israel tends to assume that weapons in the West Bank were somehow smuggled in by Iran or Jordan, insiders know that the Palestinian resistance simply purchase black market arms that were stolen from the Israeli army.

Palestine takes seat at UN General Assembly in ‘historic first’

The Cradle reports:

Palestine was seated for the first time among UN member states on 10 September during the first session of the 79th General Assembly in New York.

Permanent Observer to Palestine at the UN, Riyad Mansour, was seated at a table labeled “State of Palestine” between Sri Lanka and Sudan. The seating was approved by UN General Assembly president Philemon Yang.

“This is not merely a procedural matter. This is a historic moment for us,” said Egyptian ambassador to the UN Osama Mahmoud Abdelkhalek Mahmoud.

Israel’s representative at the UN strongly denounced the seating of Palestine among the UN member states.

NOTE: Israel’s narrative has it that Hamas “started a war” on October 7th, implying that on October 6th there was peace. In reality, Israel has been at war with the Palestinian people since its creation. Hamas was exercising – albeit imperfectly – its internationally recognized right to resist the oppressor and occupier of its people.
For years, Palestinians have tried rational, peaceful methods of achieving justice: they have petitioned the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. They have held thousands of peaceful protests. In the ICC and ICJ, the United States always exercises veto power in Israel’s favor. When it comes to peaceful protests, Israeli soldiers shoot to kill.

Netanyahu vows to build barrier along border with Jordan

Andalou Agency reports:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Wednesday to build a barrier along the border with Jordan to prevent what he said are attempts to smuggle weapons and fighters into the West Bank and Israel.

“This is a border of peace. We are partnering with the Kingdom of Jordan to ensure that it remains so,” Netanyahu said, adding, “there is an attempt to smuggle both terrorists and weapons across Jordan into Judea and Samaria (West Bank) and into the cities of Israel.”

Netanyahu did not specify who he believes is behind the alleged smuggling attempts.

His comments were made after the killing Sunday of three Israeli security guards at the King Hussein Bridge by gunfire from a Jordanian truck driver.

Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty, the “Wadi Araba” agreement, in 1994.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi responded in a tweet: “No amount of disinformation by radical Israeli officials spreading lies, including about Jordan, will change the fact that Israel’s continued aggression on Gaza, its violation of international law and the rights of the Palestinian people are the biggest threat to regional security.”

Israel deploys white phosphorous in attack in southern Lebanon

Middle East Eye reports:

Israeli forces attacked the southern Lebanese twn of Khiam with white phosphorous munitions, Lebanese media is reporting.

In June, Human Rights Watch found that Israeli forces had unlawfully dropped white phosphorus munitions on densely populated areas in southern Lebanon.

NOTE: Use of white phosphorus in civilian areas is considered a war crime due to its extremely dangerous effects on the human body. White phosphorus ignites instantly when in contact with oxygen. It can burn through the human body, including through bone, causing severe, excruciating damage. It can also cause extreme harm when inhaled, with risks of suffocation, cardiovascular failure, coma, death, and other lifelong effects. The substance burns at temperatures of up to 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Following criticism for repeating Israeli claims, Biden now says he’s ‘outraged’ over killing of U.S. citizen

Mondoweiss reports:

On Wednesday President Joe Biden released a new statement on the killing of Aysenur Eygi, the American activist who was shot by an Israeli sniper during a protest in the occupied West Bank last week.

“I am outraged and deeply saddened by the death of Aysenur Eygi. Aysenur was a recent U.S. college graduate,” said Biden.

“She was also an activist whose idealism led her to travel to the West Bank to peacefully protest the expansion of settlements. The shooting that led to her death is totally unacceptable.”

Vice president and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris released a similar statement on Eygi’s death, calling it “a horrific tragedy that never should have happened.”

“The shooting that led to her death is unacceptable and raises legitimate questions about the conduct of IDF personnel in the West Bank,” said Harris. “Israel must do more to ensure that incidents like this never happen again.”

The statements come just a day after Biden was criticized for telling reporters that Eygi’s death was “apparently was an accident,” as an Israeli bullet had “ricocheted off the ground” before hitting her.

Eyewitness accounts from both activists with Eygi and doctors who treated her reported that she had been directly shot in the head.

Trump and Harris Agree: More Bombs for Israel

The Intercept reports:

On stage Tuesday night during the presidential debate, as the war on Gaza grinds on, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump battled over who had the most pro-Israel and anti-Iran credentials. After a brief moment of hope that Harris might offer something different to American voters, this seemed to confirm a grim status quo: No matter who is elected president, the U.S. will remain deeply invested in structures of violence and repression across the Middle East.

On Israel, Harris spent time during the debate stating her commitment to helping Israel “defend itself,” which is Harris-speak for a continued blank check of U.S. military support for Israel. This oft-repeated Harris position, now enshrined on her campaign website, undermines the hope that many Democratic voters might have had for a future Harris administration that would prioritize an end to Israel’s war in Gaza

Trump tried to outflank Harris from the right by claiming that Harris “hates Israel” and that she would destroy the country. In one of Trump’s many ridiculous statements of the night, he argued, “If she’s president, I believe that Israel will not exist within two years.” Harris responded by doubling down on her pro-Israel bona fides: “I have my entire career and life supported Israel and the Israeli people.”

Harris did mouth words of sympathy for Palestinians in Gaza, declaring once again that “far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.” She went on to say, “This war must end, it must end immediately and the way it will end is we need a ceasefire deal and we need the hostages out.”

But such statements won’t amount to much if Harris’ underlying policy is to maintain U.S. military support for Israel. So long as Harris is committed to arming Israel, she has no leverage with which to end Israel’s genocide of Palestinians.

STATISTICS OCTOBER 7 – SEPTEMBER 11:

Palestinian death toll from October 7, 2023 – September 11, 2024: at least 41,819* (41,118 in Gaza* – 11,308 women (30%), 16,715 children as of September 5. [The Ministry’s figures have been contested by the Israeli authorities, although they have been accepted as accurate by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and WHO. These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.]

This is expected to be a significant undercount since thousands of those killed have yet to be identified – and at least 701 in the West Bank (~148 children). This does not include an estimated 10,000 more still buried under rubble (4,900 women and children). Euro-Med Monitor reports 49,032 Palestinian deaths.

Lancet: “Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death9 to the 37,396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza.

Ralph Nader earlier estimated 300,000 Palestinians may have been killed in Gaza.

  • At least 45 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (27 from Gaza, 23 from West Bank).
  • At least 41 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition (at least 37 of them children)**.
  • About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
  • Almost 500,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

Palestinian injuries from October 7 – September 11: at least 100,825 (including at least 95,125 in Gaza and 5,700 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how man Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]

Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – September 11, 2024: ~1,452 (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 288*** military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza; 25 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.

NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.

*Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.

**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.

***Approximately ten of the deaths listed above were Israeli soldiers killed by Hezbollah in fighting at the Israel-Lebanon border. The figure does not include the reportedly 53 Israeli soldiers – nearly 16% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.

† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.
