Violence against hundreds of Gazan remains to find one Israeli – Not a ceasefire Day 109

Compilation of news reports – IAK staff

(While a “ceasefire” is ostensibly in place, Israel has continued its assault on Gaza without interruption. If Americans Knew considers the war to be ongoing, and in its 836th day.)

Israeli forces killed at least 4 Palestinians in Gaza on Monday.

Since the “ceasefire” began on October 11, Israel has killed at least 488 Palestinians. At least 1,350 have been injured. Death toll figures are tentative.

At least 25 Palestinians in Gaza have died due to the extreme cold, including 21 children, since the start of Israel’s genocidal war in October 2023. At least 11 Palestinian children have died of extreme cold this winter.

Israel has so far violated the 11 October ceasefire deal in Gaza at least 1,300 times (as of Jan. 15, 2026). More statistics below.

Following receipt of last hostage’s remains, Hamas expects Israel’s full adherence to its ceasefire obligations*

Hamas said on Monday that the group had “fulfilled all its obligations in a clear and responsible manner,” and now Israel must do its part “without any deduction or delay”.

“Especially the opening of the Rafah crossing in both directions without restrictions, the entry of the Gaza Strip’s needs in the required quantities, the lifting of the ban on any of them, the complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and facilitating the work of the National Committee for the management of the Gaza Strip,” the group said.

*NOTE: After imposing severe restrictions on aid to Gaza for months and causing widespread hunger and hundreds of deaths due to starvation, the ceasefire terms required Israel to surge massive quantities of aid into Gaza (600 trucks a day – actually a modest amount given the circumstances). 108 days into the ceasefire, the crossing was still closed, and the entry of aid was well below the amount agreed upon.

According to Doctors Without Borders, over 18,000 Gazans are in need of medical evacuation (through the Rafah crossing) – over 1,000 have died already due to the crossing closure.

In fact, Israel has violated most or all of the terms of the ceasefire: On October 11, 2025, all military operations were supposed to be suspended, but Israel has continued them, killing 486 Palestinians since the ceasefire began; rehabilitation of infrastructure, hospitals, and bakeries was supposed to begin, and Israel was supposed to allow entry of necessary equipment to remove rubble and open roads – none of these commitments have been fulfilled.

Israeli forces desecrated/exhumed over 200 Palestinian graves in search for body of last Israeli captive

Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor’s statement: Israel’s search for the body of its last captive in Gaza does not justify expanding the exhumation of Palestinian graves or violating the dignity of the dead.

During the genocide, the Israeli army systematically destroyed more than one‑third of Gaza’s cemeteries, exhumed graves, desecrated the remains of the dead, and stole dozens of bodies. These practices not only violate the dignity of the dead, but also inflict severe psychological harm on their families.

Any claimed search operations should be subject to strict limitations, precisely defining their scope, ensuring minimal interference, and conducted in the presence of a neutral body.

NOTE: Israel is expected to hand over the bodies of at least 15 deceased Palestinians in exchange.

The town of Silwan is part of East Jerusalem and is located in the Wadi Hilweh valley, just south of Jerusalem’s Old City walls, with an estimated population of 55,000. Over the years, Silwan has been targeted by Israeli settlement projects, and has seen some 65 locations in the town taken over by Israeli settlers, and a biblical park called ‘the city of David’, run by religious settlers, built in the place of Palestinian homes.

But since December, a particular part of Silwan has been at the center of news in Palestine: the Batn al-Hawa neighborhood, where dozens of Palestinian homes have been the target of Israeli settlers for years (continue reading here).

Lebanon files UN complaint against Israel’s daily ceasefire violations*

Lebanon has filed a complaint with the United Nations about repeated Israeli violations of a November 2024 ceasefire, calling on the Security Council to push Israel to end its attacks and fully withdraw from the country.

In addition to thousands of ceasefire violations, Israel also continues to occupy five points within Lebanese territory as it blocks the reconstruction of several border villages that it leveled to the ground, preventing tens of thousands of displaced people from returning to their homes (continue reading here).

*NOTE: Although Israel signed a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon in November 2024, Israel has attacked Lebanon almost every day since, committing over 10,000 air and ground violations, and killing over 300.

UK: Pro-Palestine protesters charged with calling for ‘intifada*’

In December, the Metropolitan and Greater Manchester police forces announced they would arrest people for chanting ‘globalize the intifada.’

*NOTE: Rouand X, an Afro-Palestinian, explains: At its core, “globalize the intifada” captures the idea that the Palestinian Intifada  — the term Palestinians popularized during their grassroots uprising against the occupation back in 1987, and which means to “shake off” and “rise up” —  was never just a local uprising confined to the streets of Gaza or the alleyways of the West Bank.

It was, instead, a model of struggle that revealed how ordinary people could resist a system of domination with nothing but their own bodies, voices, and determination. To globalize the Intifada means to recognize that this form of resistance — decentralized, popular, and rooted in everyday life — carries lessons for oppressed peoples everywhere (continue readinghere).
