NOTE: The Gaza Health Ministry’s daily casualty figures are based on the number of dead and wounded Palestinians brought to hospitals, and does not include victims that are under the rubble or elsewhere, where ambulance and civil defense crews can not reach them.
At least 100 Palestinians were killed, and dozens injured in fresh Israeli strikes on Wednesday across the war-torn Gaza Strip, medics said. [NOTE: This number was updated Thursday.]
Among the dead were at least 32 Palestinians who were killed on Wednesday afternoon when Israeli warplanes bombed a restaurant and a busy marketplace in Al-Remal neighborhood, west of Gaza City.
Two of the fatalities were Palestinian journalists, in separate incidents – one of whom was killed just hours after the birth of his first daughter.
Also killed on Wednesday was Abdul-Fattah Ahed Ahmad Al-Hreibat, 20, who was fatally shot by Israeli forces near Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank.

IDF Ordered Gaza Mosque Evacuation but Hit Nearby School Instead, Killing 32, Residents Say
Thirty-two Palestinians, among them at least nine children and four women, were killed on Tuesday in two aerial attacks on a school that served as a displaced persons camp in central Gaza’s Al-Bureij, according to sources in Gaza.
The Israeli army claimed that the target of the attack was “a Hamas command and control area,” and that precautions were taken to prevent hitting civilians. The Palestinians say, however, that while the IDF issued a warning and an evacuation order, it was directed at a mosque near the school, which was not hit at all in the attack.
Palestinian sources said that people who were present near the mosque entered the school upon receiving the warning, for fear of getting hit. Eighteen people were killed in the attack. Four hours later, the school was hit again, that time on its northern side. According to reports, another 14 people were killed. Among those killed in the two attacks were at least nine children under the age of 14.
Videos and photographs released on Wednesday show remains of children lying on the roof of a nearby building, parents carrying their wounded children, or bidding farewell to their dead children.
The IDF spokesperson has not yet responded to the Palestinians’ claims that the school was hit, and has stated that the military targeted “a Hamas command and control compound,” adding that “many precautions were taken to minimize the chances of harming civilians.”*
*NOTE: This is a typical – and false – statement. When Israel feels obliged to explain its airstrikes (often it doesn’t even bother), it uses essentially the same words, “the site was a Hamas command and control center”; often followed by, “many steps were taken to reduce the chance of harming civilians,” and a note that it used “precise” munitions.

Israel is starving Gaza. It’s a cheap, silent and brutal way to kill
Yoav Gallant, the former Israeli defense minister, is the primary architect of the starvation policy in Gaza, which is unfolding as I write. The international criminal court issued a warrant for his arrest indicating “reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Netanyahu … and Mr Gallant … bear criminal responsibility for … the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare.”
Gallant’s successor, Israel Katz, has embraced the Gallant policy. He and his boss, Benjamin Netanyahu, broke the ceasefire with Hamas in March. Since then, they have worked fastidiously to starve the people in Gaza – food, medicine and critical supplies for the maintenance of human life have all been prevented by Israeli troops from entering the territory for more than two months.
Starvation is attractive to mass murderers for a few reasons.
First, it’s cheap.
While Joe Biden and Donald Trump – and the majority of Democrats and Republicans in Congress – have committed more than $22bn of public money to Israeli’s genocide, killing people can be expensive. Tanks, bombs, missiles, drones, bullets and incendiary devices all cost money to make and deliver.
But starvation doesn’t require any big outlays. Impose a siege, and human biology resolves the rest (continue reading here).

World Central Kitchen halts work in Gaza, UNRWA calls Israel’s policy “absolute cruelty”
The World Central Kitchen (WCK) announced Wednesday that it has halted work in the Gaza Strip because it has run out of supplies.
“After serving more than 130 million total meals and 26 million loaves of bread over the past 18 months, World Central Kitchen no longer has the supplies to cook meals or bake bread in Gaza,” it said in a statement.
Stressing that WCK trucks loaded with food and cooking fuel have been ready at the Gaza border since early March, it said additional food and equipment are ready to be shipped to the border from Jordan and Egypt.
“Our vital work cannot continue without permission from Israel for this aid to enter,” it added.
UN refugee agency accuses Israel of deliberate starvation in Gaza
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) accused Israel of pursuing a deliberate and politically motivated starvation policy against the population of Gaza.
“The manmade and politically motivated starvation in Gaza is an expression of absolute cruelty,” the agency said in a statement on X.

New details on Israel’s plan for controlling aid in Gaza
For the past two months, Israel has blocked food, water and electricity from entering Gaza, with experts warning that mass starvation is once again imminent.
Then, last week, representatives of Cogat, the Israeli military unit overseeing movement logistics between Gaza and Israel, presented United Nations officials with their detailed plan to take over – and restrict – aid distribution in Gaza.
According to a memo of the 2 May meeting seen by MEE, private security contractors will run up to five ‘logistics hubs’ in southern Gaza from which aid will be distributed.
The aid will be limited to 60 trucks entering the enclave each day, with 20kg parcels distributed to people whose identities will be checked by facial recognition tools and who will be alerted by SMS messages to collect their food and essential supplies. [NOTE: before October 7th, 2023, about 500 trucks of goods entered Gaza every day; Gaza also produced much of its own food.]
“In this model, only hot meals within hubs will be allowed. No other kitchens or bakeries would be permitted to operate in Gaza,” according to the memo.
Israel’s security cabinet approved the plan, reportedly by a large majority, with satellite evidence emerging on Wednesday that work has already begun to build the hubs.
Aid workers say it is not only the hubs in Gaza which concern them, but also a new, much more detailed process that is requiring international NGOs to re-register with the Israeli government in order to work in the occupied Palestinian territories.
“They want details of every single person who works for us and potentially our beneficiaries as well, details of staff locations, biometric information,” said another aid worker with an organization operating in Gaza (continue reading here).

‘High-level’ discussions underway over US taking control of Gaza
There have been “high-level” consultations between the US and Israel over the possibility of Washington leading the post-war administration of Gaza.
Five people familiar with the matter told Reuters that a transitional government would be headed by a US official that would oversee Gaza until it had been demilitarized and stabilized, and a viable Palestinian administration had emerged.
The five sources, who are familiar with the preliminary discussions, suggested there would be no fixed timeline for how long such a US-led administration would last.
They compared it to the Coalition Provisional Authority led by the US in Iraq following the 2003 invasion.

No recovery possible without ‘sustainable political solution’: UN adviser on Gaza reconstruction
As Israel unveils controversial plans to permanently reoccupy Gaza, hopes for a ceasefire and meaningful progress on reconstruction have suffered a significant setback.
Experts say that if there is to be any hope for Gaza’s future, there must be political will.
“The first prerequisite is to have a sustainable political solution and stability in Gaza,” Mamoun Besaiso, an advisor to the UN on Gaza’s reconstruction, told Anadolu.
“Without a political solution, we don’t think we can start reconstruction, because after two or three years, another war will come, and the destruction will happen (again).”
David Prais, chair of the Greater London Investment Fund (GLIF), added, “We really need permission from Israel to help the Palestinians … Really the thing standing in the way is the Israeli government” (continue reading here).

Almost 100 House Dems sign letter urging Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza
At least 94 House Democrats have signed a letter urging Israel to immediately allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, saying it is “strategically counterproductive.”
In the letter addressed to Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, they said:
As supporters of a strong US-Israel relationship, we write to express our opposition to the current Israeli government policy to block all humanitarian aid from entering the Gaza Strip. In addition to the harm imposed on Palestinian civilians, it is strategically counterproductive and will only hurt Israel’s international standing and longterm security.
While we share concerns about Hamas diverting humanitarian assistance, we encourage your government to work with the United States, alongside humanitarian organizations, to do everything possible to minimize the risk of diverted resources without harming civilians.
NOTE: Israeli officials have provided no evidence that Hamas is stealing aid. On the contrary, Israeli news outlets have reported that the Israeli military itself is behind the looting of aid trucks.

Profiting from Annihilation: Tools of genocide promoted at Greek weapons fair
If there is one thing worse than committing a genocide, it is trying to exploit that genocide for commercial gain. That is precisely what is happening at the Defense Exhibition Athens (DEFEA) trade show.
Israel’s Robotican is using the event to promote its Rooster drone and the various “tactical tools” developed for that weapon. The Rooster works in tandem with a US-made robotic dog to “sniff” targets for Israel’s attacks in Gaza.
Israel’s ambassador in Greece and a representative of Rafael, a major Israeli weapons firm, are both scheduled to speak at a discussion on “cyber defense” during DEFEA.
Rafael is profiting handsomely from Gaza’s annihilation.
The firm has announced that the value of the new orders which it won in 2024 exceeded $8 billion. That was almost $4 billion higher than the total figure for new orders clinched two years earlier (continue reading here).
