Researchers estimate Gaza death toll may be 100K+ – Not a Ceasefire Day 46

Compilation of news reports – IAK staff

(While a “ceasefire” is ostensibly in place, Israel has continued its assault on Gaza without interruption. If Americans Knew considers the war to be ongoing, and in its 779th day.)

At least four people were killed in Gaza Monday. Among the dead were a child killed when a leftover ordnance exploded.

Since the “ceasefire” began on October 11, Israel has killed at least 345 Palestinians. Among them are at least 67 children. Death toll figures are tentative.

Israel has so far violated the 11 October ceasefire deal in Gaza at least 497 times.

US-backed GHF mission ends – with lies and exaggerations

The US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) on Monday declared the end of its mission in Gaza, nine months after its establishment: “The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) today announced the successful* completion of its emergency mission in Gaza after delivering more than 187 million free meals directly to civilians living in Gaza,” the organization said in a statement.

GHF Executive Director John Acree said the group was “winding down our operations as we have succeeded in our mission of showing there’s a better way to deliver aid to Gazans.”

Acree said the GHF’s model was being adopted and expanded by the Civil Military Coordination Center (CMCC) and other international organizations following weeks of talks (continue reading here).

*NOTE: Use of the word “successful” is a stretch when describing GHF’s work in Gaza. The world has gotten firsthand accounts of Israel’s massacres of Gazans since the first day of so-called aid distribution: at least 2,615 Palestinians were killed in and around the aid sites – by IDF soldiers and GHF personnel – as they sought to secure a box of food or a bag of flour.

Globally recognized human rights organizations warned that the GHF model was deeply flawed and bound to create chaos, and called it a “dangerous, politicized sham.” Countless videos from reporters and aid-seekers, as well as whistleblower testimonies, bore witness to utter mayhem; meanwhile, GHF staged videos in which small, controlled groups of Gazans calmly collected parcels and left without incident.

News reports indicated from early on that the organization was a tool of the Israeli government, allegedly funded by the notorious Israeli Mossad.

Israel is allowing no more than 200 aid trucks into Gaza per day out of the 600 agreed upon under a ceasefire deal with Israel, local authorities said Monday. Ismail Al-Thawabteh, who heads Gaza’s Government Media Office, said, “Israel is managing hunger in Gaza deliberately, slowly, and cumulatively,” he said, warning that malnutrition levels among Gaza’s population have exceeded 90%.

Around 300 Palestinians have been allowed to leave Gaza for medical treatment, according to the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli Defense Ministry unit responsible for civilian coordination in the Palestinian territories.

UNRWA says the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains catastrophic, despite the ceasefire. The UN agency added that more than 90 percent of Gaza’s population is entirely dependent on aid, with many receiving only one meal every 24 hours.

Another hostage body was found in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The body was located in an area controlled by the Israeli army. It will be returned Tuesday. The remains of two more hostages are still missing.

Netanyahu escalates with “Muslim Brotherhood ban,” raising concerns of wider targeting of Palestinians in Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments about completing a ban on what remains of the “Muslim Brotherhood” in the Palestinian towns inside Israel have triggered concern and anger among Palestinians, one group describing the move “a message that no one is safe from his government’s plans”

Palestinian groups inside Israel view the move as part of a political and security approach that targets the Arab presence in all its forms. They say it revives old patterns of persecution and opens the door to a more dangerous phase (continue reading here).

‘A Knife in the Back’: Bedouin Villagers in Israel Given 90 Days to Evacuate – and Nowhere to Go

The Israeli High Court rejected the appeal of residents of the unrecognized village of Ras Jrabah, ordering them off land they have lived on since before Israel’s founding to make way for the expansion of the city of Dimona. The court also denied their request to relocate into the city, backing the state’s position that Bedouin cannot receive plots in Jewish communities.

“We’ve been on our land since the time of the Ottomans and the British; Dimona was built partly on our lands,” says Sheikh Freij Alhwashla, the village elder. “The first residents of Dimona had it rough, and we helped them. This was during the transitional immigrant camps. We gave them bread and milk and when it was muddy, we helped them get home on our camels. Where will we go now?” he asks angrily.

“We helped Israel, and this is what we deserve? Even if the state comes in and throws a mass of explosives on us and kills us all, we won’t move. We will die here” (continue reading here).

Two Years On, IDF Is Still Searching Gaza’s Tunnels for Militants (unlawfully)

An Israeli army spokesman in Gaza gives talking points to reporters whose movements are strictly controlled:

“We do not operate beyond the yellow line*,” the Golani Reconnaissance Unit commander emphasizes. “We launch attacks and operations within our area, in an organized way, to push the enemy back and hit them when they come out to attack us from the tunnels.”

It is hard not to notice how much more operational freedom the forces now have, with no concern about living hostages still in the tunnels. Unlike before, the IDF is now employing all means at its disposal. “We are not dealing with this or that cease-fire**,” says Col. A (continue reading here).

*NOTE: While this particular unit may or may not pass the Yellow Line that marks the boundary of the Israeli-controlled part of Gaza, some troops cross the line on a regular basis, and the IDF has relocated the line in order to expand Its territory – and then attacked the Palestinians inside the new line.

**This is an admission of violation of the ceasefire. Israel has so far violated the 11 October ceasefire deal in Gaza at least 497 times.

Israel to Seize Palestinian Municipal Powers* for Construction at Hebron’s Tomb of the Patriarchs

*NOTE: Since the Israeli Civil Administration is not formally mandated to carry out Israeli plans for the site in the West Bank, any action related to construction requires the seizure of powers from the Palestinian municipality. ‘We Will Not Become Executioners on Behalf of the State’: Israeli Doctors Refuse Role in Death Penalty for Terrorists*

*NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance

On October 7th, Hamas was exercising – albeit imperfectly – its internationally recognized right to resist the oppressor and occupier of its people. Hamas fighters attacked Israel after years of oppression and many nonviolent attempts to call attention to the issue. The UN has passed hundreds of resolutions demanding justice – to no avail.

Academic boycott of Israel doubles, even after Gaza war ends: Report

How Corporate Partnerships Powered University Surveillance of Palestine Protests

This is the first detailed reporting on how a U.S. university used the AI technology to surveil its own students. It’s just one example of how public universities worked with private partners to surveil student protests, revealing how corporate involvement in higher education can be leveraged against students’ free expression.

This is the final installment in an investigative series on the draconian surveillance practices that universities across the country employed to crack down on the 2024 pro-Palestine encampments and student protests. More than 20,000 pages of documentation covering communications from April and May 2024, which The Intercept obtained via public records requests, reveal a systematic pattern of surveillance by U.S. universities in response to their students’ dissent.

Public universities in California tapped emergency response funds for natural disasters to quell protests; in Ohio and South Carolina, schools received briefings from intelligence-sharing fusion centers; and at the University of Connecticut, student participation in a protest sent administrators into a frenzy over what a local military weapons manufacturer would think (continue reading here).
