Major Israeli massacre kills at least 28 in Gaza – Not a Ceasefire Day 41

Compilation of news reports – IAK staff

(While a “ceasefire” is ostensibly in place, Israel has continued its assault on Gaza without interruption. If Americans Knew considers the war to be ongoing, and in its 774th day.)

At least 28 people were reportedly killed in Wednesday’s surge of attacks on Gaza. Among those killed are 17 women and children. (For an analysis of this escalation, go here.)

Since the “ceasefire” began on October 11, Israel has killed at least 312 Palestinians. Death toll figures are tentative.

Israel has so far violated the 11 October ceasefire deal in Gaza at least 393 times.

At least 17 people have been killed by Israeli attacks on south Lebanon over the past 24 hours, including Lebanese citizens and at least 13 Palestinian refugees, mostly children.

Heavy rains flood Gaza tents with sewage, putting thousands of children at risk

Save the Children says children in Gaza are sleeping on bare, wet ground in clothing soaked with sewage water after heavy rains flooded hundreds of tents and makeshift shelters over the weekend, heightening the risk of disease as winter sets in.

The group said more than 13,000 households were affected by Friday’s flooding, as Gaza’s sanitation system has largely collapsed after two years of Israeli bombardment, siege and severe aid restrictions. With drainage systems destroyed, rainwater mixed with sewage inundated tents, soaking mattresses, blankets, clothing and even food supplies.

With more than 81 percent of buildings damaged, two-thirds of Gaza’s children – approximately 700,000 – are living in tents that are falling apart after two years of bombardment and displacement.

Israeli forces issue demolition* orders to four Palestinian families in Old City of Jerusalem

Israeli occupation forces on Wednesday delivered demolition orders to four Palestinian families in Aqabat Al-Khalidiya district in occupied Jerusalem’s Old City, claiming their homes are unfit for living.

The families, who have lived in the homes for nearly six decades, reported that Israeli authorities have for years refused to grant them permits to repair or upgrade the aging structures, and have also prevented them from carrying out essential maintenance to ensure the safety of their homes. This neglect, they said, causes the buildings to deteriorate and crack, and is later used as a pretext for demolition.

*NOTE: Most home demolitions undertaken by Israel are due to Palestinians’ “building without a permit.” Israel admits that its construction permit system is highly discriminatory. Between 2016 and 2020, 99.1 percent of Palestinian requests for building permits were rejected, according to data provided by the IDF’s Civil Administration. This is part of Israel’s apartheid system.

(Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. IDF: Palestinian Militants Fired on Troops*; Israeli Strikes Across Gaza Kill 28, Including Women and Children, Officials Say

Palestinian medical sources report 28 killed in Israeli strikes across Gaza on Wednesday, which the Israeli military said came after militants opened fire on troops near Khan Younis.

Seventeen of the dead were women and children, the medical sources said.

According to the military, no casualties were reported in the shooting incident, which it called a breach of the ceasefire agreement** with Hamas. Hamas said its members did not fire on Israeli forces and condemned the Israeli strikes (continue reading here.).

*NOTE: Israel has had a pattern of justifying attacks on civilians and protected sites – especially hospitals – by making claims like this without providing a shred of evidence. Just a few examples: this, this, this, this.

**NOTE: This statement is rich, coming from the Israeli military, which has violated the ceasefire at least 393 times by one count, killed over 300 Gazans, and withheld food and shelter from the wartorn population.

Survey Shows 45% Rise in Sexual Abuse* Reports in Israel’s Education System Last Year

*NOTE: While rape crisis centers in Israel have clearly experienced booming business, they have not yet found a single credible report of rape by Hamas members on October 7th, 2023. The accusation of systematic mass rape is only one of the myths that have been thoroughly debunked.

On the other hand, credible testimonies abound (including at least one video) of Palestinians being sexually abused at the hands of Israeli soldiers – some of whom have become folk heroes. (American mainstream media have failed to cover this issue in any meaningful way.)

US officials: Saudi F-35s will be downgraded* despite Trump’s assurances

*NOTE: Earlier this week, President Trump said of Israel and Saudi Arabia, “As far as I’m concerned, I think they are both at a level where they should get top of the line” F-35 stealth fighter aircraft, adding that Israel would want to have better planes than any other country.

The fact that the US has now downgraded the caliber of the F-35s for Saudi Arabia is due to America’s so-called Israel QME policy. According to the US State Department website:

Steadfast support for Israel’s security has been a cornerstone of American foreign policy for every U.S. Administration since the presidency of Harry S. Truman.

Since its founding in 1948, the United States has provided Israel with over $130 billion in bilateral assistance focused on addressing new and complex security threats, bridging Israel’s capability gaps through security assistance and cooperation, increasing interoperability through joint exercises, and helping Israel maintain its Qualitative Military Edge (QME).

This assistance has helped transform the Israel Defense Forces into one of the world’s most capable, effective militaries and turned the Israeli military industry and technology sector into one of the largest exporters of military capabilities worldwide.

The UN Embraces Colonialism: Unpacking the Security Council’s mandate for the U.S. colonial administration of Gaza

More than two years into the genocide in Palestine, the UN Security Council has finally acted. But rather than acting to enforce international law, protect the victims, and hold the perpetrators accountable, it adopted a resolution that openly flouts key provisions of international law, disempowers and further punishes the victims, and rewards and empowers the perpetrators.

Most disturbingly, it hands control of Gaza and the survivors of the genocide over to the United States, a co-perpetrator of the genocide, and provides for the participation of the Israeli regime in decision making. Under the plan, Palestinians themselves are to be granted no such participation in decisions on their own rights, governance, and lives.

In adopting this resolution, the Council, in effect, has become a mechanism of U.S. oppression, an instrument for the continued unlawful occupation of Palestine, and a complicit actor in Israel’s genocide (continue reading here).
