NOTE: The Gaza Health Ministry’s daily casualty figures are based on the number of dead and wounded Palestinians brought to hospitals, and does not include victims that are under the rubble or elsewhere, where ambulance and civil defense crews can not reach them.
Among the dead were Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Qudra, chief of the anti-narcotics police, and journalist Hassan Aslih.
Israel kills Palestinian journalist in new hospital bombing
An Israeli drone strike on 13 May killed Palestinian journalist Hassan Aslih while he was receiving treatment in the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Local media described Tuesday’s attack as a “deliberate assassination,” noting that Aslih was struck while being treated in the hospital’s burns unit.
The Israeli army claimed that it targeted “a Hamas command and control center inside the hospital,” an allegation Israel repeatedly uses when targeting medical facilities.
Aslih was a prominent field reporter and director of the Alam24 news agency. He had been recovering from injuries sustained in a previous Israeli air strike on 10 April that targeted a media tent near the same hospital.
That strike appeared to strike Aslih directly, hitting his mobile phone. Though he survived, the attack killed two other journalists and wounded several others.
In May 2024, the Israeli army also attempted to kill him, targeting his home in Khan Younis with a missile strike.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health Organization, noted on X that Tuesday’s attack killed two and injured 12. One of the injured is in “critical condition and is undergoing multiple surgical procedures,” he said.
“The burn unit was struck, 18 hospital beds in the surgical department, 8 beds in the intensive care unit and 10 inpatient beds were destroyed,” he said.
After the attack on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, the Israeli military has now heavily bombed the European Gaza Hospital in the southern Gaza city.
The Israeli army confirmed it worked with internal security agency Shin Bet to attack the hospital, which it claimed housed an underground “command-and-control centre” for Hamas.
NOTE: By one count, Israeli attacks have killed approximately 205 Palestinian journalists and media workers; Palestinians have killed 4 Israelis (other groups have tallied between 178 and 264 Palestinian journalists killed – depending on the criteria used).
When Israel feels obliged to explain its airstrikes (often it doesn’t even bother), it uses essentially the same words, “the site was a Hamas command and control center”; often followed by, “many steps were taken to reduce the chance of harming civilians,” and a note that it used “precise” munitions.
But Israel has yet to provide a shred of evidence to back up its claims; attacks are often carried out without warning to civilians to evacuate, and frequently cause massive damage and loss of life. (More here.)

Netanyahu Says the Ethnic Cleansing of Gaza Is ‘Inevitable’
“We are destroying more and more homes, and Gazans have nowhere to return to. The only inevitable outcome will be the wish of Gazans to emigrate outside of the Gaza Strip,” Netanyahu said at the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Israeli officials have made clear that the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian population of Gaza is their ultimate goal, but it remains unclear where the Palestinians would go. Netanyahu told the committee that the “main problem” preventing “emigration” is the lack of countries willing to take in the Palestinians.
Israel has maintained a total blockade on Gaza since March 2 and has developed plans to start bringing in aid using private US security contractors to use food to lure starving Palestinians into a tiny part of southern Gaza. Netanyahu said that the aid would be conditional on the Palestinians not returning to where they came from.
Limor Son Har-Melech, an Israeli MK and member of the Jewish Power Party, suggested American Jews could move to Gaza. “Bring the Jews from the United States, this way we’ll hit two birds with one stone,” he said.
Israel’s Netanyahu says won’t end Gaza war, but might accept temporary ceasefire
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he might accept a temporary ceasefire in Gaza, but will not commit to end the war on the Palestinian enclave.
Speaking during a visit to injured soldiers, Netanyahu said, “eliminating Hamas and freeing all our hostages – these work together.”
“Hamas might say ‘okay – we want to release ten more.’ There will be no situation where we stop the war,” Netanyahu added.
According to the Times of Israel, Netanyahu assured his coalition partners that unless Hamas agrees to disarm, Israel will accept only a temporary ceasefire that frees some of the hostages.
“In the coming days, we will enter with full force to complete the operation to defeat Hamas. Our forces are there now,” he added.
Netanyahu also said on Tuesday that his government is “working” to find countries that will receive Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
“We’ve set up an administration that will allow them [Gaza residents] to leave but… we need countries willing to take them in,” a statement by his office said. “That’s what we’re working on right now.”

Israeli cabinet votes to formalize annexation of occupied West Bank territory
In a landmark and highly controversial decision, Israel’s cabinet voted on 13 May to take full responsibility for land registration in Area C of the occupied West Bank – an area comprising around 60 percent of the territory and home to the vast majority of Israeli settlements. The move, pushed by far-right Ministers Israel Katz and Bezalel Smotrich, is widely being described by critics as a de facto annexation of Palestinian land.
Under the 1995 Oslo Accords, Area C was placed under temporary Israeli control, with an eventual transition to Palestinian Authority (PA) administration expected. That transition never materialized.
Now, with the new cabinet resolution, any land registration efforts by Palestinians in Area C will be declared legally void by Israel. Israeli authorities plan to initiate formal land registration processes, conduct widespread land surveys, and potentially reclassify vast tracts as “state land,” opening them for settlement expansion.
Under international law, all Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank is illegal.
Analysts warn these sweeping measures could severely damage Israel’s diplomatic standing and bury any remaining chances of a negotiated two-state solution.
Dr Yohanan Tzoreff, a senior researcher at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and an expert on Palestinian affairs, said these steps amount to annexation.
“This is Smotrich’s life mission – he wants to entrench irreversible facts on the ground that prevent any possibility of a future two-state agreement,” he said. “In the past, this kind of move was done cautiously. Now it’s annexation on steroids” (continue reading here).
NOTE: Annexation of land – that is, the proclamation of sovereignty over the territory of another State – is aviolation of international law.
US ended Houthi campaign amid mounting risks, soaring expenses: Report
The US ended its two-month military campaign against the Yemeni Houthi group after a series of costly losses and rising risks to personnel, according to a New York Times report Tuesday.
The campaign that was launched March 15 was to degrade Houthi capabilities targeting vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 2023 in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. But it quickly turned into a high-cost operation with diminishing returns.
In just 30 days, the Houthis downed at least seven MQ-9 Reaper drones, each valued at around $30 million, preventing the US from achieving its goal of air superiority, according to CNN.
Several F-16s and an F-35 aircraft narrowly escaped Houthi air defenses, “making real the possibility of American casualties,” US officials told The New York Times.
And two F/A-18 Super Hornets, worth $67 million each, fell into the sea from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in separate incidents. Three US personnel were injured during the incidents.
The US military spent approximately $1 billion in munitions during the first month of the campaign, the newspaper reported, raising concerns about the sustainability of the operation.
Universities holding Nakba memorials will see funds cut: Israel minister
In a post on X, he published a letter to far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich demanding funds be denied to Israel’s Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University after Nakba commemorations were held there.
“Academia is not a platform for incitement under the guise of freedom of expression,” Kisch wrote, claiming the events at the two universities are “part of a broader and worrying phenomenon”.
Students have been holding similar pro-Palestine events in universities across the world, particularly in the United States. Kisch particularly attacked Tel Aviv University President Ariel Porat, urging him to “look and learn what is happening in the US to universities that commemorate Nakba Day”.
