Death toll numbers ambiguous in Gaza with health centers in ruin

There are hundreds of cases of entire families being killed in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. They end up being buried in the yards of their homes or in the streets.

Israeli forces launched a major ground incursion in early October that continues to this day. Video from the war-battered area shows people digging graves on roads or sidewalks. All of these cases have gone unreported because victims are never brought to Gaza’s besieged hospitals.

The entire healthcare system in the northern part of the Strip is out of service without any proper mechanism for recording the number of casualties in the area. Hundreds of these cases have been proven to take place since the beginning of this genocidal war.

It is increasingly difficult to keep track of mass killings during Israel’s relentless attacks.

Israel kills yet another Palestinian journalist

Palestinian media organizations condemned the killing Friday of Saed Abu Nabhan, a freelance Anadolu cameraman in the Gaza Strip.

Abu Nabhan, who was covering events in the Nuseirat refugee camp, was “martyred by the bullets of Israeli snipers,” according to a statement from the Gaza Media Office.

It described the killing as part of Israel’s “targeting, killing, and assassination of Palestinian journalists” and accused Israel, along with its allies, including the US, UK, Germany and France, of bearing full responsibility for the attack.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate criticized Israel’s actions as an “intentional effort to conceal the truth and obscure crimes against the Palestinian people.”

Abu Nabhan, 25, who had a wife and one child, was killed Friday in a long-range rifle attack by the Israeli army.

The death of Abu Nabhan brought the number of Palestinian journalists killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023, to 203.

Reports also indicate that 399 journalists have been injured, and 43 captured.

Israel must be added to UN’s sexual violence blacklist

Israel’s consistent obstructions of all United Nations investigations into allegations of sexual violence since 7 October 2023 is profoundly concerning. These obstructions, coupled with substantial evidence indicating systematic and widespread acts of rape and other forms of sexual violence by Israeli forces against Palestinians, including prisoners and detainees, constitute grave violations of international humanitarian and human rights law. The grounds for the inclusion of Israel on the UN’s blacklist of entities suspected of perpetrating sexual violence in conflicts are compelling.

For the past 15 months, Israel has consistently refused to cooperate with all United Nations bodies with an investigative mandate to examine allegations of rape and other forms of sexual violence arising from the attacks of 7 October.

It was disclosed last Wednesday that Israel has once again denied authorization for an investigation by the UN Special Representative on Conflict-Related Sexual Violence, Pramila Patten. This refusal reportedly stems from concerns that a comprehensive investigation would expose Israel’s systematic use of mass rape against Palestinians, including women and children, as Patten had insisted that access to Israeli detention centers to investigate allegations against Israeli soldiers was a crucial requirement for the process (continue reading here).

NOTE: The United Nations already added Israel to the list of states committing violations against children last June for its actions during the war against Gaza.
The report is compiled by the UN secretary general’s special representative for children and armed conflict, Virginia Gamba. The list attached to the report is widely intended to name and shame parties to conflicts in the hope of deterring violence against children.

Israeli war chief orders plan for ‘complete defeat’ of Hamas in Gaza before Trump’s inauguration

Israel’s defense minister has ordered the military to prepare and submit a plan for a “decisive victory” in Gaza and the “complete defeat” of Hamas, Hebrew media outlets reported on 10 January.

Israel Katz said the army must draw up a strategy for the “complete defeat of Hamas in Gaza” and stressed that the plan would commence if the captives being held by the resistance were not released by the time US President-elect Donald Trump takes office, according to Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.

The incoming US president recently threatened that “all hell would break loose” if the Israeli captives were not released by the time he assumes the presidency.

Katz rejected the idea of a political solution and said no Arab or international force would take charge of leading the administration of post-war Gaza without a complete collapse of Hamas.

Shin Bet chief wants ‘reality-changing move’ in occupied West Bank

Israeli media outlets report that Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar called for the army operation at a meeting with Netanyahu, ministers and security officials after a shooting incident on Monday. Three Israelis were killed and eight others wounded near the illegal West Bank settlement of Kedumim.

“Israel should learn from October 7 and not allow the intensification of these terrorist* elements,” Bar was quoted as saying in a Channel 12 news report.

“Therefore, a broad, reality-changing move must be initiated that will collapse and eliminate the phenomenon of the armed Palestinian battalions … in order to ensure our freedom of operation there.”

*NOTE: The use of the word “terrorist” for a group that resists occupation and oppression is a political, not fact-based choice. In reality, international law supports the efforts of resistance groups against an occupying power, the UN extending that right to the point of armed resistance.
Hamas has clearly and openly stated that its enemy is not the Jewish people, but the supremacist ideology of Zionism – the ideology under which Israel dispossessed 750,000 Palestinian people and exiled them to Gaza and other locations.

Int’l fugitive Netanyahu to receive Polish immunity despite war crimes charges

International fugitive and alleged war crimes suspect, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is to be granted immunity by Poland, despite facing arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The Polish government has adopted a resolution ensuring Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials can freely travel to Poland for the 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp liberation, effectively shielding them from potential arrest.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed yesterday that “whether it is the prime minister, the president or the minister of Israel, whoever will come to Oswiecim for the celebrations in Auschwitz will be assured of safety and will not be detained.”

Most of Israeli captives held in north Gaza ‘now missing’: Qassam Brigades

2024 was marked by the slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians - the deaths we know about - and the maiming of at least 100,000 more; the starvation of the entire population; the levelling of the urban and agricultural landscape; and the systematic erasure of Gaza’s hospitals and health sector.

Election of new Lebanese president ‘puts pressure’ on Israel to withdraw troops: Report

Hebrew media reported on 10 January that the election of Joseph Aoun as president of Lebanon will increase pressure on Israel to withdraw its troops in the south of the country.

Israeli newspaper Walla wrote that Aoun’s election on 9 January, which broke over two years of political deadlock in Lebanon, “is expected to increase pressure on Israel to complete the withdrawal of IDF forces from southern Lebanon by the end of January,” citing senior US and Israeli officials.

The report notes that the new president, formerly the commander of Lebanon’s Armed Forces (LAF), enjoys broad international and Arab support – particularly from the US and Saudi Arabia.

“The Israelis will soon begin to receive the message from all over the world that they need to come to terms with reality and that there is no way they can stay in Lebanon,” a US official told the outlet.

If the army does not withdraw, it will “find itself in conflict with the international community.”

NOTE: The Israeli army has reportedly committed at least 432 violations of a cease-fire agreement with Lebanon since the agreement took effect on Nov. 27.
The violations included incursions, artillery and tank shelling, demolitions of homes and buildings, drone and warplane overflights, and sweeping operations with machine guns.
On Friday, 6 Lebanese were killed in an Israeli drone attack, for a total of at least 39 deaths since the ceasefire took effect. Lebanon has essentially maintained its end of the deal.

Israel plans long-term occupation of ‘control zone’ deep inside Syria: Report

Israel plans to establish a “control zone” 15 kilometers deep inside Syria and an intelligence “sphere of influence” extending 60 kilometers, claiming the new government in Damascus includes “the most dangerous people in the world,” Ynet reported on 10 December.

“The Israeli army will maintain a presence to ensure that the new regime’s allies in Syria cannot fire rockets toward the Golan Heights,” the officials told the Hebrew newspaper.

They stressed “the need for a 60-kilometer sphere of influence inside Syria under the control of Israeli intelligence to monitor and prevent potential threats from developing.”

Israel claims that the new Syrian government, led by the former Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), poses a threat to Israel that is ignored by western countries.

“No one can guarantee that they will not eventually turn against us, and these are very dangerous people,” an unnamed senior Israeli official told Ynet.

However, the Israeli government provided financial, military, and medical support to HTS in the past when the group was known as the Nusra Front.

UN Experts Slam US Bill Sanctioning ICC: “Blatant Violation of Human Rights”

A group of UN human rights experts is urging the U.S. Senate to block a bill that seeks to punish the International Criminal Court (ICC) and people affiliated with it after the body issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, condemning the bill as “dangerous” and against international law.

“It is shocking to see a country that considers itself a champion of the rule of law trying to stymie the actions of an independent and impartial tribunal set up by the international community, to thwart accountability,” the four experts said in a statement on Friday.

The statement was put out by Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers Margaret Satterthwaite; Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese; Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order George Katrougalos; and Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights Ben Saul.

On Thursday, the House overwhelmingly voted to pass the bill, entitled the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, garnering the support of nearly all Republicans in the chamber and 45 Democrats.

Opponents of the bill have pointed out that the bill is seemingly purpose-built to ensure that Israeli leaders enjoy impunity at a time when there is an increasing consensus among human rights experts that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The bill compels the president to issue sanctions for ICC officials and people who assist in ICC proceedings against a U.S. ally. It also targets the families of these individuals with sanctions, which include barring them from entering the United States.

NYU issues one-year suspensions to students over peaceful Gaza sit-ins

New York University (NYU) has suspended nearly a dozen students for a year for participating in Gaza antiwar sit-in protests in December, a group of pro-Palestine staff members have said.

The notices went out on Wednesday, suspending 11 students until January 2026, in what the NYU Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine group called “a draconian case of collective punishment”.

Two NYU faculty members were also arrested during December’s sit-ins, despite the American Association of University Professors saying they were only there to ensure the student demonstrators’ safety.

STATISTICS OCTOBER 7, 2023 – JANUARY 10, 2025:

Palestinian death toll from October 7, 2023 – January 10, 2025: at least 47,382* – 46,537 in Gaza; in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers and/or settlers have killed at least 845 Palestinians (~175 of them children).

(The ministry of health added 499 deaths to its death toll on Saturday, specifying they have now completed the data and confirmed identities on files whose information was incomplete.)

Thousands of those killed in Gaza have yet to be identified, and an estimated 11,000 more are still buried under rubble.

According to a report in the Lancet, by multiplying the reported deaths by five, it is possible to reach a conservative estimate of total deaths (including indirect causes like starvation and lack of medicine). Using the latest figure from AFP (46,006), it is reasonable to estimate at least 232,685 total deaths in Gaza since October 7th, 2023.

According to a recent report by the UN Human Rights Office of identified fatalities in Gaza, about 44% were children. It is reasonable to estimate that 20,848 of known direct deaths and 102,381 of the total deaths are children.

Palestinian injuries from October 7, 2023 – January 10, 2025: at least 116,571 (including at least 109,571 in Gaza and 7,000 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how many Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]

Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – January 10, 2025: ~1,608 (or 1,581) (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 423*** (or 396) military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza (updated: Jan. 7, 2025); 46 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.

NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.

ADDITIONAL STATISTICS: Since October 7th, 2023:

  • At least 54 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (at least 35 of them from Gaza).
  • At least 43 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition (at least 37 of them children)**.
  • About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
  • About 345,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

*The Ministry’s figures have been contested by the Israeli authorities, although they have been accepted as accurate by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and WHO. These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.

Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.

**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.

***The figure does not include the reportedly 59 Israeli soldiers – nearly 17% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.

† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.
