Watching the waves of displacement sweeping from the heart of Gaza to its southern edges, I am struck by the immense loss and suffering endured by the people. Here, far from my home, I am powerless—unable to document their stories, unable to give voice to their pain. The weight… pic.twitter.com/xeU1kHN390

The Disappearance of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya
In the early hours of December 27, 2024, the walls of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza shook as Israeli forces dropped bombs nearby. By sunrise, bulldozers had flattened the earth leading to the entrance and Israeli tanks were closing in.
Snipers surrounded the complex. Inside, 350 patients, doctors, nurses and their families huddled in the hallways.
At around 6 a.m., a voice from a quadcopter hovering over the hospital summoned Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the acting director of the Kamal Adwan Medical Complex.
He climbed through rubble to reach an Israeli tank a block away. He knew he had done nothing wrong.
A photo of Dr. Abu Safiya approaching the tank has become an iconic symbol of Israel’s merciless assault on Gaza—and of Palestinian resilience. He returned to the hospital shortly afterwards.
By nightfall, Kamal Adwan had been emptied and shut down by the Israeli military. Dr. Abu Safiya and all the men inside were detained.
Dr. Abu Safiya has been in Israeli custody ever since without formal charge or trial in inhumane conditions (continue reading here, or watch the documentary below or on YouTube).
NOTE: Israel has killed over 1,400 medical personnel, in what is widely believed to be a targeted attack on healthcare workers. Israel has also systematically destroyed most of Gaza’s hospitals and clinics.
ISRAEL RELEASES 13 PALESTINIANS FROM GAZA AFTER MONTHS OF DETENTION: Israel has freed 13 Palestinians from Gaza after holding them for months under what medical and rights groups described as harsh and degrading conditions that left them malnourished and showing signs of abuse. Rights groups, including the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, say thousands of Palestinians from Gaza have been detained since Israel’s war on the enclave began nearly two years ago.
NOTE: Israel is currently holding over 10,000 Palestinian prisoners in inhumane conditions where many are systematically tortured – the number includes several hundred youths and women, as well as thousands of administrative detainees – being held without charge or trial. (Administrative detention is intended to be used only in “exceptional” circumstances, but Israel uses it widely. Read more here.) Approximately 1 million Palestinians have been detained since the Israeli occupation began in 1967.

Israel ‘utterly rejects’ UNGA declaration on two-state solution with Palestinians
Israel “utterly rejects” the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voting to endorse a declaration outlining steps towards a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, the Israeli foreign ministry says.
“Once again, it has been proven how much the General Assembly is a political circus detached from reality: in the dozens of clauses of the declaration endorsed by this resolution, there is not a single mention that Hamas is a terrorist organization,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein said in a post on X. [More below on the declaration.]

Washington Post: Israeli intelligence agency balked at Netanyahu’s strike in Qatar
When Israel announced Tuesday that it had launched a strike on senior Hamas leaders in Qatar, one security agency was notably missing from the official statements. The Mossad, Israel’s external intelligence agency, had declined to participate.
Mossad director, David Barnea, opposed killing the Hamas officials in Qatar partly because such an action could rupture the relationship he and his agency had cultivated with the Qataris, who had been hosting Hamas and mediating ceasefire talks between the militant group and Israel, these people said.
The Mossad’s reservations about a ground operation ultimately influenced how the strike was carried out and perhaps its likelihood of success (continue reading here).

OTHER NEWS:
UN overwhelmingly endorses two-state solution declaration
The United Nations General Assembly on Friday overwhelmingly voted to endorse a declaration outlining “tangible, timebound, and irreversible steps” towards a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians ahead of a meeting of world leaders.
The vote comes ahead of a meeting of world leaders on September 22, in which Britain, France, Canada, Australia and Belgium are expected to formally recognize a Palestinian state.
The declaration condemns the attacks against Israel by Palestinian militants Hamas on October 7, 2023, as well as the attacks by Israel against civilians, siege and starvation, and calls for the deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission mandated by the U.N. Security Council.
In a post on X, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said, “For the first time today, the United Nations adopted a text condemning it for its crimes and calling for its surrender and disarmament.”
The United States described the vote as “yet another misguided and ill-timed publicity stunt” that undermined serious diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

New York state sends police chiefs to Israel for ‘counterterrorism’ training
More than a dozen police officers from the state of New York are on a training trip to Israel despite human rights experts saying that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Police officers have already been accused of being heavy-handed against pro-Palestine protestors both on student campuses in the state and in New York City.
The 13 officials are said to be learning about security issues facing Israel, undertaking counterterrorism training to protect Jewish communities, and learning about antisemitism (continue reading here).

‘We do not agree’: Paramount criticizes Israeli film industry boycott
Paramount said it does “not agree with recent efforts to boycott Israeli film-makers”, making it the first major studio to respond to a recent pledge not to work with institutions that supported or were otherwise involved in the “genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people”.
Paramount was recently acquired by the family of billionaire Larry Ellison* and private equity firm RedBird Capital Partner.
The pledge circulated by an organization called Film Workers for Palestine has more than 4000 signatures including directors and actors like Jonathan Glazer, Ava DuVernay, Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Olivia Colman and Mark Ruffalo, and was inspired by “Filmmakers United Against Apartheid, who refused to screen their films in apartheid South Africa”.
*NOTE: Larry Ellison is the largest private funder of the Israel Defense Forces, and is deeply tied to the Israeli national security state; he counts Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu among his closest friends.
