Amnesty Int’l joins other orgs in calling out Israel’s genocide – Day 424

On Wednesday, Israeli air strikes killed about 70 Palestinians across Gaza.

At least 20 Palestinians were killed when Israeli airstrikes hit the Al-Mawasi ‘safe zone’ in southern Gaza.

Israeli forces also attacked Gaza City, killing at least 25 people.

The Israeli military also bombed an aid distribution point in the central Nuseirat refugee camp, killing at least five children.

Israeli forces empty ‘last shelters’ at gunpoint in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya, displacing thousands

Israeli troops used loudspeakers in quadcopter aircraft to forcibly displace thousands of Palestinian civilians from the last shelters in Gaza’s northern city of Beit Lahia on 4 December, as Tel Aviv continues its brutal extermination and expulsion campaign across the strip’s north.

According to Gaza journalist Hossam Shabat, over 6,000 Palestinians have been displaced from schools in Beit Lahiya, and have reached the Civil Administration checkpoint.

The Israeli army has stepped up its violent attacks on the area in order to put pressure on civilians to evacuate.

Overnight, Beit Lahiya was subjected to exceptionally violent attacks and forced displacement.

Israeli forces planted and detonated mines and explosive barrels between buildings in an attempt to forcibly expel what remains of northern Gaza.

Israeli quadcopters have also been dropping grenades filled with shrapnel on “anyone who moves.”

The Prisoners’ Affairs Commission (PAC) and the Palestine Prisoner’s Society (PPS) have reported that a Palestinian detainee has died in Israeli detention.

Children, women ‘incinerated’ in Israel’s latest attack on al-Mawasi, southern Gaza

The Israeli army has issued a statement saying that it carried out what it described as a “precise air strike” against a Hamas operative in the so-called humanitarian zone in al-Mawasi in Khan Younis.

Now, this is an area of sand dunes that has no services, no water, no electricity. But it is where Israel has squeezed in much of the displaced population in Gaza.

According to medical sources in Gaza, 20 people were killed – incinerated really – in that attack, including women and children.

Those facts again debunk Israel’s claims that it takes measures to avoid civilian casualties. And this is not the first time that Israel has attacked civilians in the so-called humanitarian zone in their tents.

Eyewitnesses and survivors described this particular attack as very large and very unusual – a large ball of fire consuming the tents and shrapnel that set other tents on fire, flying hundreds of meters away from the target.

An Israeli strike on Wednesday on a tent encampment of displaced Palestinians has killed at least 10 people in al-Mawasi, an area that was designated a humanitarian zone by Israel's military.

Israel occupation forces shoot another Palestinian journalist

The Israel occupation forces have shot another Palestinian journalist in northern Gaza. Mohammad Awad was filming Palestinian civilians being displaced from Beit Lahia on Wednesday when he was shot and sustained injuries to his hand and neck. He was taken to Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City for treatment.

Journalists in Gaza face particularly high risks as they try to cover the genocide, including incidents such as devastating Israeli air strikes, starving civilians desperate for food and water, the displacement of the population and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

According to the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists, the Israelis have killed more journalists over the past year in Gaza than in any other conflict over the past three decades. Almost two hundred have been killed by the occupation forces since October last year.

Amnesty International investigation concludes Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza

Amnesty International’s research has found sufficient basis to conclude that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip, the organization said in a landmark new report published today.

The report, ‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman’: Israel’s Genocide Against Palestinians in Gaza, documents how, during its military offensive launched in the wake of the deadly Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on 7 October 2023, Israel has unleashed hell and destruction on Palestinians in Gaza brazenly, continuously and with total impunity.

“Amnesty International’s report demonstrates that Israel has carried out acts prohibited under the Genocide Convention, with the specific intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza. These acts include killings, causing serious bodily or mental harm and deliberately inflicting on Palestinians in Gaza conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction.

“Month after month, Israel has treated Palestinians in Gaza as a subhuman group unworthy of human rights and dignity, demonstrating its intent to physically destroy them,” said Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International.”

Callamard called on the international community, particularly the US and Germany, to “act now to bring Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza to an immediate end” (read the full report here).

The Israeli branch of Amnesty rejected the international organization’s new report that accuses Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian dies in Israeli prison under torture: Rights groups

The death of Mohammed Walid Hussein Ali in an Israeli detention center was due to torture, according to a joint statement by the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.

The statement said the Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority, which serves as the official liaison with Israel, informed them of the death of Ali from the Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem in the northern West Bank.

Ali, 45, had previously spent nearly 20 years in Israeli prisons and was released three years ago. He was arrested again a week ago and transferred to the Jalamah interrogation center in northern Israel, the statement added.

This morning, Wednesday, terrorist #settler militias carried out brutal attacks on the towns of Beit Furik and Huwwara near Nablus. In Beit Furik, they set fire to an under-construction house, a grocery store, and a vehicle.

Elderly Palestinian man killed in an attack by Israeli forces near Nablus

An elderly Palestinian man was killed on Wednesday afternoon after the Israeli occupation forces attacked him in the town of Aqraba, south of Nablus.

The mayor of Aqraba, Salah Jaber, reported that the occupation forces severely beat the elderly man, Sheikh Atef Malik Diriya, while he was on his land adjacent to a colonial street in the town’s lands, leading to his death.

Diriya was later rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead of his wounds by the Ministry of Health.

Israeli forces storm Nablus hospital disguised as medical staff

Israeli security forces on Wednesday raided Al-Araby hospital in the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, kidnapping a man who was wounded in an Israeli drone attack the day before.

The Israeli forces were reportedly dressed in disguises that included doctors and nurses, stormed the ICU, drew their weapons, assaulted nurses, and abducted a patient who had been injured yesterday in an Israeli attack near Tubas.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health condemned the raid, saying it was a “flagrant violation of all international laws”.

According to the health ministry, the World Health Organization has reported more than 600 Israeli attacks on healthcare facilities and workers in the occupied West Bank since the Israeli war on Gaza began on 7 October 2023.

Lebanon reports 5 new Israeli violations of cease-fire deal

Lebanese media reported on Wednesday five new Israeli violations of a fragile cease-fire deal between Beirut and Tel Aviv, including shelling and blowing up buildings.

Lebanon has reported over 120 violations of the cease-fire since the deal came into force last week in the hope of ending 14 months of fighting between the Israeli army and Hezbollah.

According to an Anadolu tally based on Health Ministry figures, at least 14 people were killed and 13 others injured in Israeli attacks since last week’s ceasefire.

UN demands Israeli withdrawal from Golan Heights

The UN General Assembly adopted on 3 December a resolution demanding Israel’s withdrawal from Syria’s illegally occupied Golan Heights, which the Israeli army captured during the 1967 war.

The resolution demanded “once more” that Israel withdraw from the occupied Golan Heights “to the line of 4 June 1967″ while stressing the illegality of settlement building and other activities in the territory.

“The continued occupation of the Syrian Golan and its de facto annexation constitute a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region,” it added. Any decision imposing laws or jurisdiction in the region is “null and void and has no validity whatsoever.”

The vote passed with 97 in favor, eight against, and 64 abstentions.

In 2019, US President-elect Donald Trump, during his first term, recognized Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights in a highly controversial move.

France: Transparent Inquiry Needed as Pro-Palestine Journalist Marine Vlahovic Found Dead in Her Home

Women Press Freedom mourns the tragic loss of French journalist Marine Vlahovic, found dead on November 25 at her Marseille home. The 39-year-old Middle East expert and advocate for the Palestinian cause was discovered by friends on her residence’s roof terrace.

She was reportedly working on a documentary about Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

The circumstances surrounding her death are unclear and demand a thorough investigation. While an autopsy revealed no immediate evidence of foul play, toxicology results are pending.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Marine’s family and loved ones and urge authorities to conduct a full and transparent inquiry into her untimely passing.

In 2024, Women Press Freedom has documented the deaths of at least 24 women journalists, including 10 Palestinian reporters killed during Israeli attacks on Gaza. The international community must act urgently to protect journalists, who face growing threats for reporting the truth.

Revenge, fire and destruction: A year of Israeli soldiers’ videos from Gaza

WASHINGTON POST: In the 14 months since the Israeli military launched its invasion of Gaza, videos and photographs have repeatedly shown its forces demolishing entire buildings, including homes and schools, as well as looting and torching them. Other visuals have Israeli soldiers posing next to dead bodies and calling for the extermination and expulsion of Palestinians.

Running through many of these images is the theme of exacting revenge on Gaza for the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023 attack, the bloodiest day in Israel’s history.

Israeli soldiers have posted thousands of photos and videos from the battlefield, recording their actions in the war and broadcasting them on social media. Though the Israel Defense Forces have ordered troops not to film and post “revenge” videos, they have continued to appear online throughout the war.

The result is a vast cache that gives a rare and troubling view of how some elements of the Israeli military have conducted themselves during one of the most deadly and destructive wars in recent memory (continue reading here).

STATISTICS OCTOBER 7, 2023 – DECEMBER 4, 2024:

Palestinian death toll from October 7, 2023 – December 4, 2024: at least 45,336* ( 44,580 in Gaza* – 69% are women and children, according to Gaza’s Media Office). [The Ministry’s figures have been contested by the Israeli authorities, although they have been accepted as accurate by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and WHO. These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.]

This is expected to be a significant undercount since thousands of those killed have yet to be identifiedThis does not include an estimated 10,000 more in Gaza still buried under rubble (4,900 women and children).

In the West Bank, Israeli soldiers and/or settlers have killed at least 805 Palestinians (~169 of them children).

In July 2024, the Lancet said: “Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death to the 37,396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186,000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza.

Ralph Nader earlier estimated 300,000 Palestinians may have been killed in Gaza.

  • At least 60 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (at least 47 from Gaza).
  • At least 43 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition (at least 37 of them children)**.
  • About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
  • About 345,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

Palestinian injuries from October 7 – December 4, 2024: at least 111,988 (including at least 105,739 in Gaza and 6,450 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how many Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]

Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – December 4, 2024: ~1,584 (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 406*** military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza (updated: Nov 29); 39 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.

The death toll in Lebanon since October 8, 2023 is at least 4,047, of which 3,961 were killed in the final months before the ceasefire; most of the 16,638 injuries also occurred toward the end of the war.

NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.

*Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.

**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.

***The figure does not include the reportedly 56 Israeli soldiers – nearly 16% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.

† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.
