Leaked texts have revealed slain conservative commentator Charlie Kirk privately criticized “bullying” by “Jewish donors” while admitting he was considering leaving “the pro-Israel cause” before his death.
The texts emerged after commentator Candace Owens released a screenshot of Kirk venting in a group chat about Jewish donors withdrawing funding over his links to Tucker Carlson, a rogue conservative commentator who has been heavily critical of Israel following his breakaway from Fox News to move independent.
Turning Point spokesman Andrew Kolvet confirmed the authenticity of the screenshots on Tuesday during an episode of The Charlie Kirk Show.
In the text messages, Kirk complained that a Jewish donor had pulled a $2 million annual investment from Turning Point USA because he refused to disinvite Carlson from the upcoming AmericaFest event.
He said his “Jewish donors play into all the stereotypes,” but remained adamant he would not be coerced by money into changing anything about his public persona and affiliations.
“Just lost another huge Jewish donor,” Kirk wrote. “$2 million a year because we won’t cancel Tucker. I’m thinking of inviting Candace. Jewish donors play into all the stereotypes. I cannot and will not be bullied like this. Leaving me no choice but to leave the pro-Israel cause.”
The messages were in contrast to many of Kirk’s public comments in recent years. The 31-year-old was regarded as a leading supporter of Israel in the conservative movement, frequently traveling to the country for religious and political events.
In August, during an interview with Megyn Kelly, Kirk said he had “a bulletproof resumé showing my defense of Israel … I believe in the scriptural land rights given to Israel. I believe in fulfillment of prophecy.”
Kolvet said he had known about the texts but chose not to share them publicly “because it was a private exchange … I wanted not to betray my friend’s trust”.
He added that shortly after Kirk’s assassination, he provided the messages to government officials because he wanted to leave “no stone unturned”.
Netanyahu smashes ‘insane, outrageous’ conspiracy
In the days following Kirk’s horrific public assassination, a wave of conspiracy theories alleging Israeli involvement in his death gained traction among certain social media figures and commentators.
The claims ranged from insinuations about Mossad to accusations of pro-Israel financiers exerting coercive control over Kirk’s publicly-held positions.
They were fuelled largely by critical comments Kirk had made about Israel directly after the October 7, 2023, attacks.
“I’m not willing to go so far as to say Netanyahu knew, or there was intelligence here, but I think some questions need to be asked. Was there a stand-down order?” he said on the Patrick Bet David Podcast.
“Six hours? I don’t believe it. Israel is the size of New Jersey. When I took a helicopter ride from Jerusalem to the Gaza border, it was 45 minutes. For six hours, they’re live-streaming the killing of Jews. Did somebody in the government say stand down? That is a legitimate non-conspiracy question.”
Among those publicly entertaining or amplifying the conspiracy that Israel may have been involved in Kirk’s death were Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and white nationalist streamer Nick Fuentes.
Fuentes ran an episode titled “DID ISRAEL KILL CHARLIE KIRK?” and used imagery tied to Jewish motifs in his show.
Carlson suggested that Kirk had a fraught relationship with Netanyahu, saying Kirk was “horrified” by developments in Gaza, despite his pro-Israel posture.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu forcefully rejected these theories. He called them “insane”, “false”, and “outrageous”, citing Nazi propaganda tactics.
“Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, said that the bigger the lie, the faster it will spread. Well, somebody’s fabricated a monstrous big lie: that Israel had something to do with Charlie Kirk’s horrific murder,” he said.
“This is insane. It is false. It is outrageous.”
He also used sarcasm to highlight the absurdity of the rumors.
“Israel also changes the orbit of the moon, Israel pushes the sun,” he said.
Netanyahu further argued that Kirk had consistently expressed support for Israel and the Jewish people, citing a letter Kirk sent him months before his death.
He also implicitly challenged the motives behind the speculation, suggesting that some rumors might be driven by “obsession” or even external funding.
“Now, some are peddling these disgusting rumors — perhaps out of obsession, perhaps with Qatari funding,” he said.
