Sixth prisoner swap complete, some Palestinians released in very poor health

Of the 369 Palestinian prisoners released on Saturday, 333 had been captured or arrested in Gaza since the beginning of the war. They were taken straight to the territory.

Thirty-six Palestinians serving life sentences in Israeli jails were also released. About two dozen were immediately deported through Egypt to other Arab countries. One was taken to Jerusalem and 10 arrived by bus in Ramallah, the main city in the West Bank and administrative center of the Palestinian Authority, where a crowd had gathered to welcome them.

In Gaza, the freed prisoners were taken directly to the European Hospital in Khan Younis for medical checkups.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, a spokesperson for Hamas, one of the prisoners was transported to the hospital via ambulance.

In the West Bank, four Palestinian prisoners were rushed to the hospital after arriving in Ramallah with serious health complications, a humanitarian organization said on Saturday.

Palestinians released from Israeli jails have been subjected to hunger, physical abuse, and psychological torture in custody, with their physical appearances indicating maltreatment.

Photographs of the majority of the freed prisoners revealed a significant weight loss while in Israeli custody, and some of them were seen struggling to walk due to their poor physical condition.

The Palestinian prisoners’ media office has said that the poor health of the recently released Palestinian prisoners indicates the “extent of the crimes and violations inside the prisons”.

The organization reported that Israeli authorities “deliberately insulted and assaulted the prisoners until the moment of their release,” adding, “the effects of torture and oppression were clear on the prisoners’ bodies.”

Freed Palestinian detainees said that Israeli occupation forces issued explicit threats to all prisoners released on Saturday, warning them against expressing gratitude towards Gaza or the resistance, or speaking out about the torture they endured during their imprisonment in Israeli jails.

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, and Saraya Al-Quds, the armed faction of Islamic Jihad, handed over three Israeli captives, including a dual US national and a dual Russian national, on Saturday.

The brigades also gave one of the three Israeli hostages an hourglass bearing the words “Time is running out” in three languages intended for the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hamas has so far released 19 Israelis in exchange for 766 Palestinians released from Israeli jails, including women and children.

West Bank: Israel plans to ‘destroy’ Jenin camp, continue military siege ‘indefinitely’: Report

Israel plans to continue military operations in Jenin “indefinitely” to destroy the refugee camp in the city and prevent more than half of its residents from returning, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported on 14 February.

“Officers from the Israeli Civil Administration explained to us that the military operation in the camp will continue indefinitely and that more than half of its residents will not be able to return to it after the destruction,” said Ammar Abu Bakr, the head of the Jenin Chamber of Commerce.

Israeli media reported that the army’s Central Command is considering establishing permanent military posts in or near the Jenin camp, allowing a specialized battalion to launch rapid military operations.

Israeli airstrike kills several in south Lebanon as ‘ceasefire’ nears end date

At least three people were killed and five others injured, including two children, on 15 February in an Israeli airstrike targeting a car on the Jarjouh-Luwaizeh road in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region of south Lebanon.

According to the Israeli military, the strike targeted “a key member of Hezbollah’s aerial unit.” The latest attack on Lebanese soil took place less than 72 hours before a unilaterally extended ceasefire comes to an end.

Since a US-backed ceasefire agreement was put into effect in late November, the Israeli army has violated the terms of the deal hundreds of times, killing dozens of Lebanese citizens and injuring hundreds.
