One killed in central Gaza as Israel fires “warning shots,” “not intended to harm”

One person has been confirmed killed in al-Rasheed Street Saturday as Israeli forces opened fire against Palestinians waiting to cross into northern Gaza.

At least other three people were reportedly injured.

People were setting up their makeshift tents as they waited to receive permission to cross the Netzarim Corridor and head back to their homes.

The Israeli military released a statement saying that it was firing warning shots rather than targeting any of the civilians who were trying to return to northern Gaza.

It claimed to have opened fire to disperse a gathering of “dozens of suspects who posed a threat to [Israeli] forces in central Gaza.”

“Contrary to reports, all shots fired in central Gaza were aimed at dispersing and not intended to harm,” it added.

There are “between 615,000 and 650,000” people waiting to go past the Israeli military positions in the Netzarim Corridor, which runs through the centre of the Gaza Strip, according to Ismail al-Thawabta, director general of Gaza’s government media office.

‘Clean out that whole thing’ (i.e. ethnic cleansing): Trump proposes relocating Palestinians outside Gaza

US President Donald Trump on Saturday proposed relocating Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan — an unusual proposal that was opposed by the former administration of Joe Biden.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One towards Miami, the president said he raised the matter during a telephone call with King Abdullah II of Jordan, and he might talk with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday.

“I said to him (Jordan’s king) that I’d love you to take on more because I’m looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it’s a mess, it’s a real mess,” said Trump. “I’d like him (Jordan’s king) to take people”.

“I’d like Egypt to take people. I’m talking to Gen. Al Sisi tomorrow sometime I believe. I’d like Egypt to take people. And I’d like Jordan to take people,” Trump continued.

“You’re talking about a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing. You know over the centuries it’s had many, many conflicts. And I don’t know, something has to happen,” he added.

Describing Gaza as “a demolition site,” the US president said: “Almost everything is demolished and people are dying there. So l’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change.”

He added that the move “could be temporary or could be long-term.”

NOTE: Israel was established in 1947 through a war of ethnic cleansing of the indigenous population. Zionist forces took over more than 78 percent of historic Palestine, destroyed about 530 villages and cities, and killed about 15,000 Palestinians in a series of mass atrocities, including more than 70 massacres.
At least 750,000 Palestinians from a 1.9 million population – both Muslims and Christians – were made refugees. Israel continues to steal Palestinians’ land for illegal colonies known as ‘settlements.’
Forced transfer of a people group is a crime against humanity.

‘Graveyards for the living’: Freed Palestinian prisoner exposes inhumane conditions in Israeli jails

Newly freed Palestinian prisoner, Mahmoud Samer Jabarin from Jenin, described Israeli jails as “graveyards for the living” recounting harrowing experiences of torture, overcrowding, and dehumanizing treatment during his seven-year imprisonment.

“I spent seven years in Israeli prisons,” Jabarin said. “The period during Israel’s genocide in Gaza was the hardest. We endured torture, beatings, and humiliation.

“We were cut off from the world entirely. They (Israeli soldiers) took everything from us. We were all subjected to beatings and torture, and food was scarce. They showed no mercy, not to the elderly, children, or the sick.

“Israeli special forces would storm our cells at 2 a.m., assaulting us, spraying us with cold water, and firing tear gas without any reason,” he said. “We were beaten, cursed, and insulted at the whims of the soldiers.”

“Each room, barely 12 square meters, housed 12 prisoners with no mattresses,” said Jabarin.

“They would hurl abusive words at us, saying, ‘You shouldn’t be alive. You should be killed. You deserve to be crushed,’” he added (continue reading here).

Female Israeli soldiers ‘wave and smile’ during release by Hamas in Gaza

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas released four female Israeli soldiers on 25 January, while Israel is releasing some 200 Palestinians as part of a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending Israel’s war on Gaza.

Reuters reports that before their release, the four Israeli soldiers were “led onto a podium in Gaza City amid a large crowd of Palestinians and surrounded by dozens of armed Hamas men. They waved and smiled before being led off, entering ICRC vehicles and being transported to Israeli forces.” The women looked well and healthy.

The Hamas fighters who oversaw the captives’ release were seen holding Israeli rifles, most likely obtained from Israeli forces who were fighting in Gaza.

West Bank: Palestinian toddler and man killed by Israeli forces

A Palestinian toddler Saturday night succumbed to an injury sustained earlier from Israeli army gunfire in Muthalath Ash-Shuhada village, south of the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Ministry confirmed that 2-year-and-a-half-old Layla Mohammad Ayman al-Khatib died of the injury she had sustained earlier in the course of an Israeli army raid in the village.

Israeli soldiers have been conducting a large-scale military operation in and near the city of Jenin for a week.

Al-Khatib had sustained an injury in the head from live ammunition shot by Israeli occupation forces, as reported by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

The Israeli military claimed it was investigating the killing, and said its troops opened fire on a building after receiving intelligence on the presence of Palestinian fighters.

Also on Saturday, a 42-year-old Palestinian man, Ahmad Mahmoud Hashash, succumbed to his injuries after being shot by Israeli occupation forces during a raid on Balata refugee camp, east of Nablus.

According to local sources, Hashash was critically injured by live fire during the incursion and was transported to a hospital in Nablus, where his death was later confirmed.

Electronic Intifada director arrested in Switzerland ahead of speaking event

The director of the Electronic Intifada, Ali Abunimah, was arrested by Swiss police ahead of a speaking event in Zurich on Saturday afternoon.

He is currently being detained and has had access to legal counsel.

The arrest came one day after Abunimah arrived in Zurich for a speaking tour.

When he arrived at Zurich airport on Friday, Abunimah was questioned by police for an hour before being allowed to enter the country.

Abunimah’s arrest appears to be part of a growing backlash from Western governments against expressions of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Trump lifts Biden’s hold on 2,000-pound bombs to Israel

The Trump White House instructed the Pentagon to release the hold imposed by the Biden administration on the supply of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, three Israeli officials told Axios.

President Biden’s decision to halt the delivery of one shipment of 2,000-pound bombs last May triggered one of the biggest crises the U.S-Israel relationship has faced during the 15-month war in Gaza.

The Israeli government was notified by the Pentagon about the release on Friday, an Israeli official said.

The officials said that 1,800 MK-84 bombs, which were held in storage in the U.S., will be put on a ship and delivered to Israel in the coming days.

Arab-American civil liberties group says international students under attack after Trump order

The Arab American Anti Discrimination Committee (ADC) said in a statement Saturday that is has received several reports of pro-Israeli groups targeting international students in a bid to have them deported from the US. This follows an Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump on Monday that makes reference to the extreme vetting and banning of foreign nationals if they appear to harbor negative feelings toward American interests or “culture”.

The ADC established a 24/7 legal hotline to report incidents of harassment last week: 1-844-232-9955.

“Under this new Executive Order, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can deny or revoke visas based on ideological beliefs,” the statement said. “A number of US-based extremist Zionist groups have begun harassing Arab, Palestinian students. These groups are directly contacting students and making threats to report them to DHS officials to be placed on a ‘jihadi deportee list.’ These groups are also pressuring universities across the country to report the names of international students to DHS and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), in hopes of having them removed from the US.”

“Make no mistake – the actions taken by these radical third party groups have one intention, and that is to silence any students who show support for Palestine,” the statement read.
