News roundup for Thursday, August 27, 2026, Day 1,057 since Israel began its 2023 genocide on the Palestinian people.
Compilation of news reports – IAK staff
NEWS & HEADLINES FROM GAZA:
For some basic info on the Palestine-Israel conflict, go here. For more critical context, skim this, this, and this. To read about a remarkable but underreported, 20-month-long peaceful protest in Gaza against Israel, go here.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The number of Palestinians being killed in Gaza is lower since the October 2025 “ceasefire” began, over 320 days ago – about 4 per day, vs. over 100 per day during the 733 days of the “war.” But Israel is actively working (with Trump’s “Board of Peace“) to ethnically cleanse Gaza of its Palestinian population, even as the low-level killing continues. Genocide experts, along with organizations like the United Nations and Amnesty International, maintain that the genocide is ongoing.
Four Palestinians were killed and others injured on Thursday in separate Israeli attacks in Gaza City and Khan Younis, local medical sources said, despite a ceasefire that ostensibly went into effect last October.
Israeli defense chief renews threat to punish Gaza for flying kites*: Israel to use ‘all necessary tools’ to deter ‘launches’ of children’s kites and balloons, defense minister warns.
*NOTE: In the summer of 2021, Israel bombed Gaza relentlessly, ultimately killing 253 Gazans (66 of them children), while Palestinian rockets killed 12 Israelis (2 of them children). (Such a disproportionate ratio is typical.) A small number of Gazans began – when the wind was right – attaching Molotov cocktails to bunches of balloons and kites, and launching them toward Israel. Some property and land damage were reported, but no Israeli deaths.
Israeli leaders may be recalling this brief “terror balloon” trend, and worrying that their nuclear capabilities are no match for such cutting-edge weaponry. Notably, no incendiary devices have been found on kites recently.
Between the tent and the cancer ward: Gaza’s patients wait for a treatment that may never come: Amid Israel’s genocide, Gaza’s cancer patients face broken treatment, medicine shortages and delayed evacuations as makeshift centres struggle to provide care.
DEATH TOLL – GAZA GENOCIDE death toll (tentative) since “ceasefire” began Oct. 11, 2025:
- 1,304 (35% of those killed, 49% of those wounded were children, women, and the elderly)
- 5 Israeli soldiers – one by friendly fire, and four others in incidents during the first three weeks of the ceasefire.

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM THE OCCUPIED WEST BANK/EAST JERUSALEM:
Every day, Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem endure dozens of incidents like the ones below, at the hands of Israeli soldiers and/or settlers. For background on the West Bank, read this and this. For information on the significance of Israeli settlers in the West Bank, read this and this.)
UNRWA chief says Israel aims to make Palestinian refugee issue* ‘go away’: Israel’s government’s raid on the last remaining facility run by the UN agency earlier this week is an attempt to “eliminate the presence of the United Nations” in the occupied Palestinian territories. “If UNRWA** is defunded and eliminated, then they are hoping that the issue of the refugees, the Palestine refugees, will go away,” Christian Saunders said. “Which means that the right of return, reparations, and compensation would go away as well.”
*NOTE: In December 1948, following Israel’s establishment based on the ethnic cleansing of approximately 750,000 Palestinians, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 194, which states: “refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property.”
The right of return for Palestinian refugees has been affirmed repeatedly by the UN General Assembly, human rights organizations like Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch. Read more about the right of return in the Geneva Conventions.
**NOTE: UNRWA, the United Nations body with a mandate to help Palestinian refugees, has been serving nearly 6 million registered Palestine refugees refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, and elsewhere for decades as they wait for their internationally recognized right of return to be activated. After a years-long campaign to dismantle UNRWA, Israel outlawed the organization following an unsubstantiated accusation that 12 employees (out of a staff of 13,000) were part of the October 2023 attack. Israel’s brief dossier, allegedly proving their guilt, offered no compelling evidence. As of June 2026, Israel has still failed to provide evidence to back up its accusations against UNRWA.

West Bank has become ‘a lawless land,’ says Cardinal Pizzaballa, top Catholic in Jerusalem: The West Bank has now become “a lawless land,” the cardinal stated, and tensions between settlers and the Palestinian population are continually rising. The situation is ongoing “without any effective security or legal restraints.” He added, “The fact that there is a situation of continuous aggression by settlers is well established.”
Why we shouldn’t call colonial Israeli settlers ‘terrorists’: We need to collectively rethink describing Israeli settlers as “terrorists.” The label was designed to serve imperial interests, and it implies that settler violence is an aberration, not a systemic part of Zionist settler colonialism.
2 Palestinian women, 1 girl injured in Israeli army attack in occupied West Bank: Qassem Abu Arram, whose wife was among the wounded, said the women were returning from a wedding when soldiers opened heavy fire on their vehicle in the town center. There had been no warning, military roadblock, or visible indication that Israeli forces were operating in the area.
New Israeli roadblocks entrench siege of homes in West Bank’s Qusra: After weeks of settler siege, three new Israeli gates around Palestinian homes in Qusra raise fears among families stuck in their homes (read the story of Qusra here).

NEWS & HEADLINES FROM ISRAEL:
Israel is a tiny country, about the size of New Jersey, with a population smaller than the US state of Georgia – about 10 million (of which about 20 percent are Palestinians), yet it is in the news constantly. As has been demonstrated again and again, however, mainstream media rarely covers Israel news accurately. IAK gets the facts – sometimes from Israeli media sites, where we can get a glimpse inside this country that is rife with turmoil and contradictions, and that receives $63 million a day from America.
Israeli army faces budget shortfall undermining military readiness, chief of staff says: Israel’s 2026 defense budget was initially set at roughly 143 billion shekels ($48B), including funding for military operations, according to the Knesset.
Finance Minister Smotrich calls to “Judaize” parts of Israel with large Palestinian populations*: Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Thursday called for expanding his settlement “revolution” from the West Bank to the Negev and Galilee [regions of Israel] at the expense of Arab [i.e. Palestinian] residents. His goal is “an additional million Jews in the Negev and Galilee through the establishment of 40 new settlements and dozens of farms” and the “significant expansion of existing settlements.”
*NOTE: Central Galilee features a heavy Palestinian majority (around 75%); The Negev is roughly 75% Jewish and 25% Palestinian Bedouin. The Palestinians inside Israel experience systemic discrimination, recently codified in the so-called Nation-State Law, which states, “The land of Israel is the historical homeland of the Jewish people…The State of Israel is the national home of the Jewish people…The right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people.”

IRAN, LEBANON, & SYRIA – NEWS & HEADLINES:
IRAN
It can not be overemphasized that Israel is the impetus behind US policies and actions vis-a-vis Iran. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has been pushing the US to attack Iran for decades, using lies and deception. Under President Trump, he got his wish.
Iranian president urges Muslim states to prevent attacks from their soil:‘No Islamic country should allow its territory to be used as a launchpad for aggression against another Islamic country,’ says Pezeshkian.
LEBANON
Israel has invaded Lebanon seven times in the last half century. Between 1978 and 2000, Israel maintained an 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon — Hezbollah was formed to fight that occupation.

Newlywed Woman Slain in Israeli Airstrike Against Lebanon Village: Saja Moussa Sharara was married on Tuesday and lived in a house in the village of Arabsalim, a Shi’ite majority village in the southern part of Lebanon’s Nabatieh District. Thursday morning she was killed when an Israeli airstrike attacked her home.
Sharara was killed instantly in the strike, and several other people in the house were wounded. Israel launched at least one additional strike in Arabsalim and wounded multiple other civilians.

SYRIA
Although Israel is not at war with Syria, the Israeli army has reportedly carried out over 1,600 violations inside Syrian territory since August 2025, and demanded the demilitarization of southern Syria – but also vowed to permanently occupy some areas.
DEATH TOLL – WARS ON IRAN & LEBANON (tentative):

- Arab states: at least 154 (including Palestine, excluding Lebanon)
- Israel: at least 60 people (Iran killed 20 civilians; Hezbollah killed 40 soldiers, 4 civilians)

UN, Red Cross Calling for Restrictions on AI Drones and Killer Robots – Israel is a Prime Offender: In Palestine, autonomous weapon systems are targeting and brutally killing people in Gaza and the West Bank as part of ethnic cleansing campaigns sanctioned by Israel’s far right government. U.S.-based companies such as Microsoft and Palantir face backlash for selling AI targeting platforms to the Israeli military, which has attacked and killed aid workers, journalists, first responders, and health care workers. The UN estimates that 30 percent of the people killed in what is broadly viewed as a genocide in Gaza are children.

Conflating Jews with Israel* Is Dangerous – Whether by Antisemites, U.S. Politicians, or the Israeli State**: Amid the outrage over Hasan Piker’s remarks, a Jewish professor of Israel studies at UCLA argues that it’s important to acknowledge how Israel’s actions fuel a lot of the anger directed at Jews.
*NOTE: Israel and its partisans are quick to label speakers of inconvenient truths antisemites – then dismiss those truths. When a human rights org publishes a report stating that Israel is committing genocide or apartheid, for example, or an individual states that Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal (as Mayor Mamdani did), Israel partisans generally accuse them of spreading disinformation, being antisemitic, or peddling a blood libel. What the accusers do not do is engage with the facts in the report to show mistakes or lies – because the reports are legitimate and documented.
**NOTE: Israel’s self-positioning as the global expert in Judaism, with its teachings centered on Israel, is an example of the intentional conflation of Israel with all Jews. This framing makes it easy to insist that criticism of Israel is antisemitic (i.e. that anti-Zionism is antisemitism) – with the ultimate outcome that Israel enjoys impunity for its actions.
