“Guardian of Zion” award will be given to former US ambassador to UN John Bolton

PRESS RELEASE: WASHINGTON, DC—(Marketwired – May 11, 2017) – Ambassador John Bolton has been invited by the Bar-Ilan University’s Ingeborg Rennert Center for Jerusalem Studies to deliver the distinguished Rennert Lecture at a ceremony on May 29th in Jerusalem. During the ceremony, Ambassador Bolton will give his speech entitled, “The Old Jerusalem and the New Jerusalem,” before receiving the “Guardian of Zion” award for his fostering of relations between the United States and Israel, and for his lasting contributions to the strengthening of Jerusalem as the eternal city of the Jewish people and throughout the world.

“It is my privilege to be recognized by the prestigious Ingeborg Rennert Center for Jerusalem Studies for my longtime support of Jerusalem and the Jewish people,” said Ambassador Bolton. “As one example, I have for years urged the United States to place its embassy in Jerusalem, which would signify to the rest of the world that Jerusalem rightfully belongs to the Jewish people. This is a meaningful step that the United States can take to symbolize its solidarity with Israel, which faces serious threats from ISIS, Iran and other state-sponsors of terrorism, as well as growing anti-Semitism worldwide. Under President Trump, who campaigned on moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, now is the time to make this a reality.”

“I look forward to discussing the relationship between the Old Jerusalem and the New Jerusalem. From America’s beginnings, people saw it as a ‘city on the hill.'”

This is the twenty-first year of the Rennert Center’s Guardian of Zion Award ceremony, which honors those who have dedicated themselves to the strengthening of Jerusalem. The inaugural Rennert Lecture was delivered in May of 1997 by the late Professor Elie Wiesel and has since included such prominent personalities as Herman Wouk, A.M. Rosenthal, Sir Martin Gilbert, Cynthia Ozick, Dr. Charles Krauthammer, Professor Ruth Roskies Wisse, Arthur Cohn, William Safire, Senator Joseph Lieberman, and last year’s honoree, Ambassador Ronald Lauder.

The Ingeborg Rennert Center for Jerusalem Studies was established at Bar-Ilan University in 1995 by US Jewish community leaders Ingeborg Hanna and Ira Leon Rennert as part of their commitment to preserve and advance Jerusalem’s heritage. Since then, the Rennert Center has become the premier academic center for Jerusalem studies, past and present.

Ambassador Bolton received the invitation to speak at the 2017 Guardian of Zion Award ceremony in July of 2016.
